Father-Son Elk/Mule Deer or Mule Deer/Antelope combo suggestions?

Outstanding! Thank you very much!!! Past experience has taught me that nothing beats word of mouth recommendations. It's the best way to cut through the malarkey. The guide I used in Alaska I found that way. A young guy who was working as an IT consultant for us recommended the guide --...

Father-Son Elk/Mule Deer or Mule Deer/Antelope combo suggestions?

I'm looking around for a combination hunt to do with my son as a high school graduation present for him. Either elk/Mule Deer or Mulie/Pronghorn. This would be two years out, so there's plenty of time. Just returned from an unsuccessful mountain mulie hunt in Alberta (weather too hot, too many...

Ruger #1 Gunsmith Recommendations (in U.S.)?

Thanks! Anyone else? Looking mainly for accuracy work, trigger jobs, rebarreling/rechambering, restocking, etc.

Ruger #1 Gunsmith Recommendations (in U.S.)?

Greetings! I'm considering having some work done on one of my Ruger #1 rifles and was wondering if anyone had a U.S. -based rifle-smith they could recommend; perhaps someone who specializes in the Ruger #1. Many Thanks!

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Well, I just "pulled the trigger" (pun intended) on the Guide Gun in 375. I'll post an update for the good of the order when I have it and have a chance to run some rounds through it. Thanks to all for all the input!

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Thanks I did see those. I'm leaning more toward the guide gun now. They're not much more than what these folks are asking.

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

My own experience with brakes in a .338 win mag and a .340 weatherby have been less than positive. Deafening report and both had 26" barrels. I can only imagine what that .375 Ruger would be like. I'll stick with the unbraked barrel weight, I think.

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Thanks -- excellent review. That's the kind of information I was seeking. My only concern now is with reports of stock splitting and feeding issues. Though I understand Ruger's customer service is very good should I have any problems.

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Thanks! If I pickup a 20" gun I'll experiment with some different loads and see what I can wring out of it. They're inexpensive enough for what you seem to be getting. I could always just have it rebarreled if the velocity turns out to be lacking. But from what I've read elsewhere, it seems...

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Hi Velo Dog! I see you're a bit of a traditionalist, as am I for the most part. I'm a classic cartridge man myself. I own or have owned rifles chambered in 375 H&H, 300 H&H, 7x57, 7x75R, 6.5x54 MS, etc. I recently sold a friend on the idea of a 9.3x62 in the form of a CZ 550fs as he was...

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

As I parse through AH I see there has been quite a bit written about the guide gun. I think I'm sold. Problem solved. Many thanks!

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Well, ActionBob, I should have done a bit of research -- I could have answered my own questions. My apologies. It appears Ruger supplies the Guide Gun with three muzzle attachment options: 1) the brake, 2) a muzzle weight (similar to the CR body of the Browning A-bolt) with no brake, and a...

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

Well, that's a good point, ActionBob, I suppose I could go with the guide gun, though I'm not wild about mzzle brakes. Perhaps it's removable? Is the guide gun an "improved" Alaskan? If so, what improvements? Don't really understand why they discontinued the Alaskan in the first place. The...

    Experiences with Ruger .375 Alaskan?

I've been mulling over the purchase of a .375 Ruger "Alaskan." The one I'm considering has a laminated stock rather than the Hogue stock, 20" barrel, barrel band, express sights. Apparently, these have been discontinued by Ruger. From time-to-time I see these rifles for sale and was wondering...

My new 375 needs a scope

I have a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x on my 375 H&H and like it very much. Actually, I was just out this past weekend shooting it. Excellent eye relief (never a case of "scope eye") and plenty of magnification on the high end for longer shots. The 1.5X setting has a great field of view. Don't think...

    Single-Shot Rifles

Hi Jduckhunter -- Congrats on the excellent return you received on that $20 investment! As far as the cartridge, that's exactly what I thought -- the 300 H&H should just about be perfect for PG. My only concern was that the Ruger is a single shot rifle and I wasn't sure how your average PH...

    Single-Shot Rifles

Thanks to all! That pretty much answers my question. There was a special run of .300 H&H No. 1 rifles a few years back. I originally passed when they were new. Came across one used (though there wasn't a mark on it) along with a Leupold VX-III for a very good price. A cut above the norm in...

    Single-Shot Rifles

I was wondering if members had any thoughts on the use of single-shot rifles for plains game. I happen to own a Ruger #1 in .300 H&H that I'm quite fond of and was considering bringing that rifle with me on my first trip to Africa -- has anyone used single shot rifles for African hunting? How...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

Thank you! According to the seller, the rifle was regulated for Norma factory 286 grain Oryx loads -- a load I'd probably use anyway and which I can probably easily duplicate with hand loads. It comes with a target that appears to show a more than acceptable 50 yard group with that load. My...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

You know, gents, I may be having a change of heart on the Merkel. I decided to follow up on Velo Dog's sage advice and looked into Verney-Carron and Chapuis as alternatives to the Merkel. While 9.3 x 74r Verney-Carron's seem rare as hen's teeth, I seem to have found something interesting in a...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

Couldn't agree with you more about the engraving. On the rifles I've seen, it is surprisingly crude. I'd much prefer no engraving to poor engraving. I've noticed also there seems to be a fairly hefty premium attached to the rifles with the coin finish and engraving -- the color case hardened...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

Thanks for your thoughts Velo Dog. Just to clarify, I'm not referring to the big, dangerous game Merkel 140 in it's various incarnations. I'm referring to the petite frame (28 gauge frame) Model 141 in something like 9.3x74R or lighter in caliber. Two things -- first I'm a left handed shooter...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

Thank you for the insight. I was actually referring to the petite-framed Merkel 141, based on the 28 gauge frame, not the big 140 series dangerous game guns. I'm thinking more along the lines of a 7x57R, 30R Blaser, 9.3x74R, etc, etc. Something appropriate for some plains game, or just plain...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

I was wondering if anyone owns or otherwise had experience with the Merkel 141 in any caliber. What are your impressions? I understand that regulation of the barrels can be adjusted by the shooter to alter point of impact for different loads and distances. How has that system worked for you...

I noticed you put the rifle up on Gunbroker but the auction closed and has not reappeared. While that's far more gun than I would ever need, I know another lefty who was practically drooling over this rifle. He's located in Pennsylvania, not all that far from you. If you'd like, I can reach...

New to the site and looking for advice

Hello John! I'm thinking about three years out. I'm going on a trip to Alberta Canada this fall and it's not an inexpensive trip -- Mountains, horses, wall tents, the whole nine yards, as we say. Once that's done, I'll turn my attention to Africa. Thanks!

New to the site and looking for advice

All good questions. Authenticity is important to me. I think I would prefer animals be native to the area. I would prefer free range. When you mention fences to most Americans like me they immediately think of what we refer to as "canned hunts." My understanding is that is not the case in...
