I have no hard feelings either and respect your opinion. I still believe it's hard to beat the .243 for recoil shy shooters. If I lived where deer are big bodied I might feel different. I've been hunting deer since the late 60's and the biggest I've killed I don't believe had a live weight...
Optics Planet has a bad reputation(well deserved IMO and experience), for showing an item as being in stock and after it is purchased, sending the buyer and Email stating the item is backordered and will be shipped at a later date. The Email is sent after the credit card is dinged and the...
I don’t have any rifles chambered in cartridges more powerful than 30-06, I do have two rifles that came with hooded front sights. Don’t know why but prefer not to have a hood.
Both rifles also have scopes so I use irons very sparingly.
I have a couple of MeoPro 3.5-10x44s. I’ve looked through the Optika6 and believe the glass is comparable to the MeoPro. I have a VX-3 1.75-6x32. The glass during normal daylight looks comparable between the Leupold and Meopta. In low light the Meopta is better to my eyes.
I believe the Vortex Crossfire II Rimfire scopes to be way over priced for the quality you get. I’ve mounted a bunch of them and find the eye relief and box horrendous. Nikon made an excellent EFR Rimfire scope. So did Weaver. Leupold still makes one, the Freedom 3-9x33 EFR. There is also...
I have Leupold, Meopta and Zeiss scopes with German #4 reticles. It is my favorite reticle and most of my scopes have them. One of my Leupold’s has an illuminated #4 which to me is the best of two worlds. Only the the dot is illuminated, the bars are not. I don’t believe I’d like the whole...
I have a pair of Caiman boots-second from the right. I like the looks of alligator quite a bit better though. I’ll definitely be giving your guy a call in the not too distant future.
Swarovski makes excellent scopes but for me they are a no go. I’ve looked through many of them over the years and don’t see as well through them as I do other brands. To be more specific I see better through Leupold, Zeiss and Meopta. I still pick a Swarovski up occasionally when I’m in the...
Professor Mawla: I’m not positive but I don’t think there is much if any gooseberry growing wild in Texas. Your comment about not hunting Axis in Texas because you hunt them in India resonated with me for two reasons. First is my experience is exactly opposite of yours, I’ve killed countless...
For all intent and purpose there is no public hunting land in Texas. If you want to hunt you own land, lease land or have friends/family who own land.
There are many free ranging Nilgai in Texas, their genesis I believe is from Nilgai that escaped from high fence ranches. The Nilgai I’ve...
On the surface your logic makes sense and common sense says you are correct. Except you are not. A last is a last. The quality of a last has to do with how well it duplicates the measurements of an individual’s feet. A custom boot maker such as Leddy’s makes two lasts for every customer’s...
I was surprised at the price for custom cowboy boots from Leddy’s. They cost that much 40 years ago.
I’m glad you mentioned that because I have seriously wide feet, 4E to be exact. If I ever get off the shelf safari footwear Courtney will be the first place I look.
A couple of points Kevin...
Might as well make this the “Lazarus” thread. I was curious about using a 30-30 for plains game, googled it and this thread popped up.
Using a lever action with iron sights is great, until you can’t see well enough to do it anymore. My Waterloo with iron sights occurred circa 20 years ago. So...
The shotgun I grew up hunting with was an ancient Montgomery Wards 16 gauge SxS. I could really hit with it. It was stolen when I was in college and I replaced with an Auto-5. My problem with SxS’s is that I want a Grulla or AyA and something seems to always come up that money has to be...
A good quality semi is much less expensive than an O/U or SxS of equal quality. I like 28 gauge but can’t afford the ammunition. Some people have a really hard time shooting O/U’s and SxS’s well, especially SxS’s.

There’s usually more than one correct way of doing something and I...
It’s been my unscientific experience that a person’s size and/or weight has zero relationship with recoil tolerance. In fact from what I’ve seen, people with a more slender build seem to be affected less than stockier people by recoil.
Football and recoil? Played from the third grade through...
When people say, “plains game”, it’s tacit they are talking certain animals in Africa, not the U.S. In the U.S. whitetail are called big game, Axis are called big game or exotic game. You know deer in the states aren’t called plains game and are being childish.
I do know what I’m talking about in that Berger bullets are excellent for some game. I never once stated that I’d use any 6.5 cartridge for eland, because I wouldn’t. I also stated I wouldn’t use Bergers on plains game. So I don’t know where you got it in your head that I’d use 6.5 bullets...
You are flat out wrong, no other way to say it. I wouldn’t use Bergers on plains game. I do use 130 grain Hunting VLD’s in my 6.5x55 on Whitetail and Axis and they are great. I’ve also used them on a few hogs I encountered when deer hunting and was happy with the results.
Many studies such as the one in Scientific American have proven to be seriously flawed and subjective. Quoting that article speaks volumes about you and your beliefs, beliefs which are probably opposite of the beliefs shared by the vast majority of members of this website.
I’ve been reading threads for years on what is the best self defense firearm. I’ve never seen an argument definitively proving what is best between handgun, shotgun or AR.
So I have a handgun and shotgun next to the bed and a loaded AR in my safe.
I have a thing for Colt snubbies but for me...
Except you are wrong. Core-Lokt bullets are excellent on whitetail and axis. They aren’t suitable for everything by any stretch of the imagination but on some animals they are excellent.
Core-Lokt is what my father bought for the milsurp 30-06 and .303 we hunted with when I started deer hunting. When I bought my Model 700 .270 in 1972 I bought 130 grain Core-Lokt because that’s the only thing I knew. Not knowing any better I killed my one elk with it in the 80’s and several...
Except some FFL’s will not accept shipments from a private individual, they’ll only accept them from another FFL.
It can be done, there is an extra step in California that must be done but I don’t remember what it is. I shipped a shotgun to California six or seven years ago with no fuss or muss.
I have a VX-3. It will get me well past legal shooting light. Not quite as far as my Zeiss and Meopta but that point is fairly moot since my VX-3 gets me past the time I can legally take a shot. I do not spin turrets, they work well enough to get me sighted in but I wouldn’t use a VX-3 for...
