You can make it as tough as you like if that's the issue. Hunt a very large property on foot. Walk and stalk. Wild self sustaining animals. If that's not good enough I don't get it.
I used a 416 RM for Buffalo and plains game on my last hunt. Worked out fine. The Swift Aframes left little exit holes in Bushbuck and Warthog. No excess damage. I strongly advise lots of practice off the sticks. I shot just under 300 rounds of 416 in the year and a half before my trip. In...
Check that the crossbolts are tight. Do this by trying to slide them back and forth. I had one that was loose. I removed both and reinstalled with blue loctite.
Last year I took a 416 Rem and used it for Buffalo and plains game. I used the same ammunition for both. 400 grain a-frames. I took two scopes. A 1.5-4x for buff and a 2-7x for plains game. The detachable mounts made by Warne held zero. I knew they would because I'd been using them for about two...
My wife and I went to a travel clinic at the University of Maryland. The doc there was a malaria researcher who often traveled to the Limpopo province and Kruger areas. He said malaria was definitely present and we needed to take medication.
I replied to this in 2020 but I'll add some more info. I went to South Africa in May of last year and had fired 295 rounds of practice shots through my Winchester Safari Express in 416 Rem and its two Leupold scopes. A 1.5-4x and a 2-7x. Both Freedoms. No change of zero during travel and no...
To beat the already dead horse:
Keep it simple!
1. Zero for 200 yards and forget about worrying about drop.
2. Shoot as much as possible off the sticks and practice staying in the gun and working the bolt quickly for a second shot.
3. Practice making the shot within three seconds.
4. Dry fire...
I use Safari Specialty Importers. No worries, just write a check. I think the price is reasonable for the peace of mind. Excellent communication, Wyatt will get back to you promptly if you have questions or concerns.
Hello SikaMDhunter,
I live in Dorchester County and have been to the RSA twice. Most recently in May of this year. If have any questions or concerns I'd be happy to help.
I suggest just one 404 and nothing else. If your rifle breaks, your PH will make a plan and get you a rifle to use. Not many rifles fail on what really are short hunts. If you memorize your holdovers, any shot within normal ranges are easy. Earlier this year I took a 416 with two scopes. A low...
That Baker is in amazing condition. It's very rare for a field grade gun to survive in that condition. I own three Bakers and think we'll of them. I'm sending a pm.
I have a Winchester M70 Safari Express 416 and used two different scopes while on my last trip. I called Luepold and asked about the resistance to recoil of the different lines of scopes and they told me they are all the same. The difference being mainly in the lens coatings. One of the scopes I...
My crate had two forklift holes midway up the side. Obviously intentional since an experienced operator would never be that far off the mark. Miraculously, nothing damaged. Shipping was through New York so I'm guessing that's where the damage was done.
Number 1 loosens the sight in the dovetail so that you can move the sight for windage. Loosen number 3 screws (lock screws) and use number 2 to move sight for elevation. Lock down numbers 1 & 3 after adjusting.

Here's the link for the Rigby style bolt knob peep sight. I don't have one, but have heard they are of the highest quality. If you cannot find a Lyman 36, here's a peep that will work.
The route is not complicated but you will be fatigued. Traveling with firearms makes you a target and everyone who sees you will know that you are an American. South Africa is not comparable with Boston. I rode that same route to my camp with an armed PH. I returned on a shuttle with a driver...
My wife and I spent 12 days with Limcroma in 2018 and we had a wonderful time. We are going back in 2022. We were very impressed with the people, the camp and food and the hunting.
They are quite stable riding on my hip. When crouching or crawling, I simply swing them up at the small of my back and they stay put. My PH and I crawled about 50 yds to get my shot at a kudu and we had no problems.
I was told by Leupold's custom shop that the Freedom series could withstand recoil as well as any of their scopes. I have about 80 rounds of 416 Remington on a 1.5-4 Freedom with a German #1 reticle. No issues.
Well everyone's situation is different and I have to plan well in advance to be away. I also am not willing to wire the considerable amount of money required for a two week safari if I don't have a very good chance of being able to travel. I also need to know that I can return on time. Even...
I have a Model 70 Safari Express and made a slight modification to make the sights work for me. I would lose the front sight and rear notch against dark backgrounds. I painted the front bead white and filed a groove straight down from the rear notch which I filled with white paint. Against a...
I sling them on one shoulder with a simple strap and they ride at my hip. It is easy to slide them up for use and they don't swing around. I figured if the PHs at my outfitter used that carry, they must have this all sorted out. Worked well for me.
I agree with what is written above except the refreshing of case colors. It is my understanding that all finishes of vintage guns were routinely redone except for color hardening.
I believe that it is a modern American demand for fresh hardening colors that causes many vintage guns to be...
I think he is stacking the cartridges so that the belts start at the back of the mag and progress forward. I have noticed the belts cause some drag in my gun but no jams. If I work the bolt briskly, like it should be done, I don't even notice the resistance of a belt having to override the belt...
One thing to consider is the weight of the scope. How much does that scope weigh compared to most low power DG scopes? If it is heavy, that will put extra strain on the mounting system.
Like most countries, they were capable of turning out guns of any quality. Cheap stuff sold in hardware stores to best quality guns the equal of almost anything. You must judge each gun on it's merits.
I started shooting a 416 Rem Mag this spring. It was a big step up from my 9.3. It is a Win Model 70 that weighed 9 1/4 lbs. bare. After a few short sessions I added a pound of weight to the butt and with a scope it weighs a little over 11 lbs. Now it is comfortable to shoot and I don't mind...
My wife and I went to Limpopo a few years ago. Before traveling, we went to the travel clinic at University of Maryland hospital in Baltimore. The doctor we saw was a malaria researcher who travels to Limpopo frequently. He said that we definitely needed to take an antimalarial medication. He...
As you can see from my avatar the rifle worked great. It was very effective. My PH said I could bring it back for buffalo but I'll probably take a 416. We'll see.
