What tricks to put on light weight 416 rem mag to help reduce recoil

Virtually every implementation of fiberglass or carbon, has initially been sold as cushioning the blow, from bicycles to golf clubs. It almost always turns out to be backed by zero data, and over time, is no longer part of the sales pitch. If a stock feels better it is probably design...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

I don't see where you came to that conclusion, other than it appears to be your default. I am saying that the idea behind the Creedmore (and other similar recent cartridges), is entirely different than the ideas behind earlier 6.5s. A knowledgeable shooter can make them into what he wants. But...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

Wow, Purdey. The question with either is whether they are set up for the Target stuff, which I assume is the case, because I believe that is the SAMMI spec. If so, I have no use for it. In 30 pages, I suppose someone else mentioned it, but the other deal with these new chambers is that they...

How do you sharpen your knife?

If one is lucky and knowledgeable, one tries not to have to go through the whole process of sharpening, and only hone the knives before they reach a tipping point. The easiest way to do that is with v mounted crock sticks. My preferred tool is the Gatco sharpener (different names for the same...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

The case is not the issue, the issue is that the Creedmore is designed for different rate of twist, longer BC bullets, lead, and phenomenal long range performance, on paper, or steel. Where this goes bad in the game field is that if it isn't a TSX, Nosler partition, etc... stubby for real range...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

All that tells one is that they are an easy sell. It has not much to do with the cartridge but the fact that it is set up to shoot the new high BC bullets. Then all the people jumping in just think, it is better than the Swede, because it has replaced it in some shoots, so there is no downside...

Curious why cape buffalo have the same minimum caliber requirement as Rhino, Hippo and Elephant?

The error in logic is to assume that the minimum caliber that can be used says anything about the remaining calibers that could be used. They are just saying don't use less, not suspend your analytical faculties and assume we are saying something we never specified about what cartridges are...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

Anything based on '08 in NATO countries is something you can reload based on free brass. And while it is probably forgotten, for a rather short period, there was a lot of interest in Silhouette rifle shooting. It was cool because so little high power comp really penetrates the hunting fields...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

It is a false analogy, because the 6.5 C is designed for long range, and long bullets, and different rifling than the Swede. I don't believe that that was an issue with the two 30s. Also, most of the rifles that the C is put in are not warhorses, which is certainly what I want for any rifle I...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

"Give it a rest" is a request, if slightly exasperated in tone. In a script it could be delivered as a command of sorts, or a plea. "Pipe down" is a command. In a script, the next step would be someone backing down, or fighting. Unless the pecking order has already been established. Where...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

That is interesting. Most of my experience is with the Prvi bullets, where my mental process is that even if the bullet breaks up it is like a double tap from most other cartridges. :) Reasonable thinking on a moose. For the nasties I have the TSX and those hydro mono solids. What says the...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

There is a difference in some cases and not in others, I would agree. So if one is after controlled expansion and a big energy dump, then the 375 is going to have an advantage. But if one is shooting solids not so much.

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Or we could say we don't like inefficiency. I couldn't dig up my chart, but it states there, and I have seen it elsewhere, that the recoil of the 9.3 is the same as a 300 win mag, which sounds at least 2 noticeable levels below the 375. And then there is muzzle blast. Probably could be a...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Relative to Canada, there was a lot of cheap brass and bullets for a while, which might help if a lot of practice was in the offing. Also, you can reload 30/06 cases. Considered unsafe due to head diameter differences. Haven't tried it myself, but I did measure the two cases, and those in my...

    Techniques for heavy recoiling rifles

I like to start with the end in sight. The problem with general purpose rifles like, the 375 H&H (excellent choices by the way) is that one now has every single imaginable objective to consider. At some point the objectives that might be the same as those for a varmint benchrest rifle would...

    Techniques for heavy recoiling rifles

A lot of people do well with Leadsleds, but there is a reason why they are not used in benchrest shooting, to put it mildly. Generally, the rifle does not start to move rearward until well after the bullet has left the building. There are a lot of specific processes, and nomenclature involved...

    Allure of the Ruger No1

I was in lockdown in 2020, just saw this. :) It has to be a stunt to be a stunt. There is a mindset, and an expectation of reward/regard in a stunt. Is it a stunt to use a double after the first shot has been sent off? Obviously not. What about if one is in a large cull situation where...

Blaser R8 - Why do African PH’s and Alaskan Bear Guides Choose Not To Use Blaser R8’s?

The problem with someone of Don's massive experience is that over the years he said a lot of things. I did come across a pro R8 quote. It was only one comment, if he covered it more completely in the Accuracy forums, I would love to see that. It was, however, framed in the context of his...

Blaser R8 - Why do African PH’s and Alaskan Bear Guides Choose Not To Use Blaser R8’s?

The Blaser is an amazing gun I am not sure the technological breakthroughs are tactical. 375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

Even if so, people discussing this stuff who haven't even decided on their first rifle (where that may be true), are at the opposite end of the spectrum of what they should consider, compared to a pro who has progressed to the point of highly refining his equipment based on experience. On the...

Particularly since the likelihood of a newbie drawing that kind of action on their first guided hunt, and being the hero, entirely because their equipment was 2 inches shorter than the next guy's, isn't all that high. As in, it may never have happened.
  34. T

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

On barrel length, the way I hear it framed is that the 24-26 are not a problem, not that shorter barrels have to be. Shorter isn't a problem if one doesn't think it is. Unless one is deafening people to no purpose. However, it is important to note that while it isn't discussed, there is...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

I meant to include in my review that some or most of the issues I mentioned with the 375 Ruger would go away if you were able to shoot it with a silencer. Recoil and noise go down. Weight goes up from a lighter starting point, potentially. And the Ruger rifles are mostly factory threaded at...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

It can certainly be argued it isn't better, even on the merits of the cartridge. In overseas hunting there is normally a bias towards commercial ammo, at least at the destination. Fully loaded, the Ruger it more recoil from lighter rifles, and heavier loads. Maybe more muzzle blast due to...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

The M14 is still out there. And the main disadvantage to the Garand was the magazine, but that does not track here. Available rifles are identical, I was just looking at a Ruger 77 in 375 H&H the other day. Decided against it because it had a split in the stock, and given the stock was very...

    Loading "Factory" Ammo

Longwalker, that would work. I am trying to avoid the steps. When one buys factory ammo, one doesn't have to buy a pre-box, that has loads from a low level, in .1 grain increments, and fire those first, in order to proof the factory load in the gun. The assumption is that a gun of modern...

I don't think so, I think that number is high for all but a few elephant guns (though if you are borderline there is a risk that the know nothing will come after you).
