durable scope rings for heavy recoil

I just received the following reply from Mr. Near [with my conversions in brackets]: .340 Wby Rig: MKV MAG SS rail is 150 Grams [5.3 ounces]. Individual rings I have not made since about 2007 or 2008. .375 Wby Rig: Black SS MKV MAG rail 150 Grams + LD30MM alphamount = 177 grams = 327...

durable scope rings for heavy recoil

Oh, and another thought. If you're asking about the weight of the 3-ring mount because you're worried that it might be too heavy, the lighter 2-ring mounts are more-than strong enough for the .340 AM. If you're asking because you want to add more weight, I'll let you know when I learn what it...

durable scope rings for heavy recoil

No problem Shuter. I just sent Mr. Near an email asking him. If he doesn't respond, I will call him, as I can't recall what the weights are, would like to refresh my memory on that, and I haven't taken any of them off since I originally installed them. I just have the three setups show above...

durable scope rings for heavy recoil

Thanks Shuter. Semper fi! They are all stainless steel. That's part of the reason I selected the 3-ring one on the .375 Wby--to add a little heft. I can't recall how much the Alpha-mount on the 7mm Wby Ultra Lightweight weighs, but it's not much, and super strong.

durable scope rings for heavy recoil

Near Manufacturing. This is the 2-ring Alpha version on my 7mm Wby: And another version on my .340 Wby: They all hold the point of aim without any movement I can detect at the range after countless hunts and slogging around.

    Medium bore DG cartridges

There may be better options, but I like the flexibility of the .375 Wby. Out of my Wby DGR with the 24" barrel, it can do all of the following: 375 WEATHERBY – NOSLER 260 GRAIN ACCUBOND – B.C. 0.473 (255 yd zero) Rng / Vel. / Impact / KE / 10 mph Drift 000 / 2975 / -1.75 / 5110 / 0.00 050 /...

    Advice on Barnes

Thanks Colo. and thanks for the info. Happy hunting. I generally prefer the Barnes mono bullets at roughly 2,500+ impacts and otherwise prefer the Noslers, but I have no empirical evidence that this is correct; it's just my hunch. In any event, even if your .500 doesn't expand, it may not...

    Advice on Barnes

Thanks Bluey. Thanks. It actually was two days of work and the hardest physical labor I've done in 20 years (since in the Marines). We had to portage the 1,000+lbs of moose meat (on the bone) and head and cape, 1,500lbs of gear, and the raft itself around a river blockage, about a quarter...

    Advice on Barnes

I just hit this guy three times with a .225gr TTSX out of my .340: The first shot went through both front quarters including some bone, ended up under the far hide, and looked like this: the other two shots went through the bull at an angle and exited into the brush somewhere. All three...

    Weatherby Rifles?

I ignore the general stereotyped opinions some have about Weatherby owners. I love the Mk V action. It's so smooth, and IMO reliable because of that. I own three of them, and they never fail to fire in any condition. And, just like other rifles shooting other calibers, they kill what...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

Good pics Colorado. You got closer than I did. Nice bear. In my Sept. hunt, I may use the same 300gr NP (I chronoed mine at and avg. of 2,756fps MV), or a 250gr TTSX (loaded at appx. 3,100 fps) or my .340 Wby with the 225gr TTSX at 3,160 fps for shots at bear, but also at longer shots at wolves.

Thanks enysse. I'm trying. recently, we have had some interesting adventures. FWIW, my friends and I brought the bear (shipped from AK) from the shipping depot into the house when my wife had the boys out of town at the beach for a couple of days. The temp was 102 fahr. It was...

    Cape Buffalo Cartridge?

I'm not saying that there aren't a lot of other rifles out there that are just great, but the anti-Weatherby histeria is a bit much. I shot my .375 Wby DGR for hours at a time in the heat the last two summers from 90-102 F. Sometimes, quickly enough that the barrel would burn my hand (te sun...

    .460 WBY

My point is simple: both types of actions can fail. IMO, push-feeds are more likely to jam from user error; CRFs are more likely to jam from mechanical error. I'm not alone in this. As one of the more prolific Alaskan guides says, “[s]ome Mauser actions have a tendency to jam, which is not...

You got reading problems? LOL. My use of the asterisk is related (like a footnote) to the use further above to make the claim that the forum should not prevent people from citing to informative outside sources, like, among all things, the "American Hunter"--which is not really a competitor of...

    .460 WBY

Someone really should include a Mark V in the test. To me (my opinion only), it's one of the smoothest, easiest loading bolts available. Short pull and short lift. Nine curved lugs instead of two big rectangular ones. Like a Swiss watch.

    375 Wby - Good Choice?

Ed: I see. I was going to get a .416 Wby until I found (see top of thread p. 1) an unfired, but used, .375 Wby dirt cheap (GB.com). I immediately put a hefty scope mount and a decent sclope on it. I also (against some advice) put a swivel stud on the stock and put a 12-oz-or-so bipod on it...

    375 Wby - Good Choice?

I couldn't agree more. To the best I can estimate, in the last 24 years, I have shot more-than 12,000 rounds through the four push-feed bolt action hunting rifles I have owned (one M77; one 700 BDL; and two Mark Vs). I literally never have had any signle failure to fire. Not once in more-than...

    375 Wby - Good Choice?

Thanks Skyline. 505ED, I really want to try the 350gr TSX in it. At about 2,550 fps (Superior Ammo in Sturgis says they can do that comfortably), it would as wide of a range of acceptable uses from short to medium ranges as about anything. If, as I hope, I get to go with my father to S.A...

I have no reason to disparage any of the other .375s, but I just took a 9'-2" brown bear in SW Alaska with a 27-7/16" skull. I shot him offhand at 97 yards with the .375 Wby. Learning to shoot a 375 H&H

I personally wouldn't use light loads. I would gear up with a good shoulder pad (I use a Cabela's one, which I think is a lot like the Past ones). It makes a big difference. First, fire it offhand. Then you'll quickly realize it's not big deal. I was all freaked out when I bought my .340...

Rhino bullets 380 grains for 375 H&H Magnum

Thanks Paul. In the short run, I'm hunting brown bear (and smaller creatures) in S.W. Alaska in Sept. I likely will go with the 300gr Partition factory loads for that, but I have wondered about getting some 350 TSXs loaded up at roughly 2,550 fps MV. Because of the relatively-high B.C., that...

Rhino bullets 380 grains for 375 H&H Magnum

Has anyone loaded the 350gr TSXs?: Barnes 375 CAL .375" 350 GR TSX FB I was wondering if they would have any advantaged in my .375 [Wby, in my case] over the 300gr bullets? Am I right that it would be helpful only in animals as big as buffalo?

    375 Wby - Good Choice?

I agree. I'm not looking to make a long shot. I rather would close within spitting distance of a bear. I think/hope my .375 Wby would be good at that too. The glass is a 1.25-8X scope. Even at fairly close range, with the 1.25 setting, I think it's pretty helpful. I have hunted plenty of...

I mean only that it's likely not too exciting for the casual reader. I was surprised a little that my velocities exceeded the published specs in a 24" barrel.
