Forgot to add: The current Norma Reloading Manual, using IMR-4350 as 100 basis, shows the same velocity with the current N204 at lightly lower pressure. Kinda makes me think the current N204 is very similar to RL17. Anyway, N204 is faster than RL19, of that I m sure.

2700 fps with a 168 grain bullet may be doable but at, probably, the high end of the pressure bell curve. 2800 fps - get a 280 Remington. I still find I'm most comfortable using H414 in a 7x57. One thing I've noticed over the years is that great accuracy is found only at a very specific powder...

    My Latest Purchase 35 Whelen

Great looking rifle and truly great caliber. Congrats to you and your wise choice. I know what Rule 303 means by Barnes bullets. My Remington 700 Classic shot several bullets (Sierra, Hornady, Nosler, Swift) and loads @1". In contrast, Barnes X bullets "patterned" at 2 1/2" to 3" if I was...

    PRVI Blank Brass Cases

It tempts me to punch my CZ 550 Lux 9.3x62 out to 9.3x66. If I kept the same shoulder angle, I should be able to use my 9.3x62 dies. Apparently, the 9.3x66 is close in power to the 9.3x64, which is the equal to the great .375 H&H. Gotta check the specs and ballistics to verify.

    PRVI Blank Brass Cases

I was looking on the PRVI Partisan website and noticed they offer "Blank Brass Cases". Looking further, I discovered they offer: .223/5.56 x 56mm blank brass, which could be used to form .222 Remington Magnum or 5.6x50. 7x64 x 67mm (.460" base diameter) 30-06 x 73mm which could be used to form...

    My Latest Purchase 35 Whelen

I have found the Remington 700 Classic stock fits me perfectly and seems to ease the felt recoil in both my 300 H&H and 35 Whelen. Does anyone know if any other M700 models have the dimensions?

    My Latest Purchase 35 Whelen

Great decision to get the .35 Whelen. Makes no difference whether it was 1983 or 1988 or 1656, it's one of the greatest calibers ever devised. I took my Remington 700 Classic .35 Whelen to Zimbabwe in 2001. It slew everything like lightning. My PH was so impressed, he would grab it and leave...

    Chronographed: .243 Winchester with RL17 & IMR4350-surprising

The Norma Reloading Manual has a great listing of powders. Norma gives the actual pressures and velocity percentages from actual testing. The "norm" is IMR4350 with a rating of 100. Its chart is not complete but it is very revealing with the powders it shows.

    Chronographed: .243 Winchester with RL17 & IMR4350-surprising

I am almost out of IMR4350 and RL17 (don't know where it all goes) but I think I'll run a four-way test; H414 vs RL17 vs IMR4350 vs N204 with 150 grain bullets in 7x57. I know the Hornady Manual often lists H414/W760 as being slower than IMR4350 or H4350 in loadings with their bullets. I have...

My Chrono's a Chrony, the one they used to call the "Master Beta". Interesting name, huh? Most of my hand loads run pretty close to what the manuals predict but any device I have ever owned could be off. The battery was fairly fresh and I disconnect the battery when I box up the unit. All...

    Chronographed: 7x57 and 300 H&H loads

Yes, I was shocked at the anemic velocity of the Nosler 180 gr 300 H&H factory load. It was amazingly consistent and looked to be very accurate but showed 184 fps under nominal. I believe some older yellow box W-W 180 gr silvertips, with a nominal velocity of 2880 fps, clocked 2830 or so in my...

The 7x57 loads? Yes, I fired the 50 H414/140 Sierra with W-W brass last in the series of three loads. I was surprised that the velocity was higher than the PRVI brass load with the same bullet. I believe the W-W cases hold 60.x gr of H2O. The rifle is most accurate with either 50.5 gr or 51...

    7x57 or 7x64

I have just started loading for the 7x64 and the .280 Remington so am at the working up stage. 3000+ fps with a 150 gr bullet sounds pretty impressive. What powder are you using? I thought most 30-06's were pretty much max'ed out at 3000 fps with a 150. I'm assuming 22" barrels here.

Actually my M70 7x47 is a Lightweight made in the early 1990's. It weighs 6# 7oz nekkid and has a fairly nice piece of wood. It's less fancy than my M70 Fwt 7x57 was but I sold the Fwt and a nice M700 Classic 7x57 and kept this one (I also kept 4 other 7x57's). As far as the velocity...

    .270 Winchester Illegal?

That's a really weird law! Only 6mm/.243" diameter and .308" diameter bullets are legal? I thought Indiana was pretty much a pro-gun state? It seems like none of your state legislators have ever been hunting or have ever read anything about hunting in their collective lives. The .30 carbine...

As I mentioned, this was a "trial" I did a few times in 2007, I believe. Anymore, I load like an old man because, well, I have become an old man! I think I will write the "Grandpa Grunt Wussy Loading Manual". I found an accurate load for my .250 Savage that coasts a 100 gr bullet along at...

Please note: The loads I mentioned are in no way recommended loads, I am merely relating what I fed my rifle a couple of times. There are several references to higher pressure 7x57 loads. Elmer Keith had one load, I forget now what it was, which seemed hot. Jack O'Connor recommended 50 gr...

I just single load the M70. It is a long-action model so I assume it will accept rounds up to 3.34" but I've never really checked. By my records, the fast load was with a heavy dose of old N204, with a specific density of .97. I won't give the exact charge (it was over 5 grains more than the...

How Did You Get Started Become Interested In Reloading

Way , way back, when I was 15 and before the GCA 68, the LGS manager called me and said he had a rifle I just had to have. It was a Remington 722 in .257 Roberts. It came with a Lee Loader, a box of Speer 87 grainers, a box of CCI primers, and a can of IMR4064. It was tight on my small...

    .270 ? 7x57 ? Or 30-06 ?

I would recommend the 7x57. It has worked on all sizes of game since 1892. Your PH should get you closer than 300 yards but a 140 grain 7mm at 2850 fps or a 150 grain 7mm at 2750 fps gives up nothing in real world terms to a .270 Win 130 grainer at 3000 fps. It probably shoots as flat as most...

Vintage slide rule to compute rifle powder loads( Field& Sports magazine)

Truth be told, I take the easy route and use the online Powley more often than I use my "hard copy" version. The online Powley computes everything at 49,000 psi and one can elaborate it from there. Try http://kwk.us/powley.html to see if that gets you where you need to be. There is also...

Couple of things....400 m is really stretching it. I think a really sharp PH should be able to get you closer. I've owned a lot of 7x57's and two 7x64's. All of the 7x57's responded to my handloading work with a minimal effort. I can easily get 2950 fps with most any 140 grainers from my...

I have found, in both my Winchester Model 70 Lightweight and my (now sold) Remington 700 Classic, the S&B 173 grain sharp-shoulder factory ammo was superbly accurate.
