I know a gal from Montana who had her crate broken into by a couple of crack heads in the states at a truck hub. Stole her waterbuck horns , impala horns and blesbok horns. Truck company would only pay for the value of the horns on the open market. So truck company looked on ebay and gave...
My favorite meat also.
The zebra shoulder mounts are the greatest. I'm not much for rugs out of anything.
The pic is of my daughter, 10 years ago with the pedestal mount of her Mt. Zebra. The guy with her is the guy who built her the wood part of the base. The wood came from a 120 year old barn...
We hunted Namibia 10 years ago. All low fence. Was a great time. Limited on species because they are all native to the land. It was more of a culture experience than the hunts we have done in South Africa. We hunted with Westfalen Safaris.
Yep seen it a lot. He was barely clearing 50.00 for 12 hours labor. Yes thats a hair above 4 bucks an hour. Covid came along and taught him how to do math. Found out he was doing mounts going in the hole or for free !! Boom..... new price that's in line with most taxidermist that weren't...
He dosent want the African mounts if that's the case.
But that said, was this taxidermist one of those cheaper than dirt taxidermist ,that finally saw the light and raised his prices to where he should have been a long time ago. I know some taxidermist that are charging 1100 for impala but...
A great north America taxidermist can do any animal that you throw in front of him. Even if he has done one or not. Key word GREAT . I would try and find one who has spent time in Africa. Look at some mounts he did for himself.
Most Taxidermist hate the repairs and hard to deal with skins...
Almost everything from anywhere in Africa has been coming in from Turkish Air lately. Plains game plus big 5 . Not sure exactly why. Cost ? Only ones who will fly it ? Don't know.
Restricted crates are only supposed to be picked up by Bonded carrier. Like a truck line. Not sure if a USDA certified person for a company like a taxidermy or tannery can pick up or not.
Were starting to see more crates from South Africa come restricted no matter what's in them. Like buckwild said its your birds. (all avian always restricted) if you got away with swine before, its that some one dropped the ball at entry. But you are still required to know the laws. I ask our...
That was from last July in the cape.
Our PH Jaco cooked it over the open fire with Acacia wood. He likes zebra meat , but doesn't like to cook it as he says all the yellow fat has to be removed before cooking. I have talked with some people who say they didn't like Zebra meat. Maybe it had the...
Tent camp in Africa I have never done. But will someday.
But we prefer a thatched roof ,rustic type place.
In Namibia we hunted a great place with a wonderful ambiance, fire pit, brii etc.
It was all low fence property and we had a wonderful time. Cooking done every night outside and we also...
I really wouldn't want my skulls and horns rattling around in a crate all the way from Africa like that. Did they arrive broken packed like that?
Sorry just never seen items tossed in a crate that way.
Never had any problems. The don't even pay attention to your guns. When you go somewhere just leave them locked in your room. Make sure you have your gun paper work from saps . I've stayed in several places in Joberg and will take city lodge every time. Easy to get to and dont have to leave...
How much did the Afton house increase to ? Stayed there in 2010 on my way to Namibia. We almost missed our flight back to USA as driver was late, so we have stayed at city lodge 4 or 5 times now instead. Was thinking of staying at Afton next time just for kicks.
Same thing happened to us in PZ on the way back. Credit card terminal wouldn't work. They must have exact money in rand cash . We had to go to western union . It takes about 17 minutes per person to get your money. Almost missed our plane . Made it by 12 minutes. We had a large group of 11 so...
They didn't charges us for any extra bags in July. We had a 50 lbs bag and a metal gun case that was 53 lbs, They only charged us 33.00 USD per firearm is all.
I have used all of them . I will Take Gracy travel every time ! The help if something goes wrong in Joberg is Steller. Shawn and Bruce saved our bacon in July this year . Gun paper work no problem either. Plus they pay to have a concierge group meet you right off the plane. They get you past...
If the crate contains skins and skulls that are restricted, the crate must be disposed of properly and all packing material. My inspectors want them burned. If mounted animals go to a USDA facility like warthog, all that is required of the USDA person in charge at said facility is to verify...
Benny Durant had everything in that store. His bacon he made and sold was top notch. I bought my first 22 pistol from him brand new for 39.00 bucks.
Charlie's chevron as a gas station is gone but the building is still there and is a meat cutting place now.
Schmidt's mill is long gone and is...
Durants building is still there ,but has been closed scince the mid 80s I believe.
The cash way on the other side of the corner was tore down in the late 80s also.
Mary Ann's grocery was just sold to the Kloninger bros from Kamiah and they are going to level it and build a newer better...
I've lived here in Weippe and Pierce my whole life. My wife was raised on a ranch on the Weippe prairie. I was raised in Pierce . We now live half way between the two on 15 acres. Crap tons of bears in this part of the world. I have a bait out less than a quarter mile from my house it has 9...
Don't worry about it. I didn't post this to discourage people ! I did it so as one could be prepared for what could happen. The wife and I aren't mad about it . As she says its always an adventure. It was totally worth it to go. Would I book with United again YES ! Would I look at other flights...
The door to airplane was still open. The doors to walk way ramp were closed so we could still go.
Im not saying there was not a problem for the flight when leaving Idaho. But it is preventable. When United came to this part of Idaho they had 2 flights per day to Denver. 1 at 5:30 AM 1 at 6:00 pm...
Just returned from Eastern cape . 9 of us flew United airlines.
We booked our air ten months before this hunt. Price was $1400.00 from Idaho. When we booked most peoples complaint was Newark gun handling.
Going over-------
Show up for the flight from Idaho to Denver. Flight leaves 3 hours...
Everyone that I know that have been to Africa that wont return, state that the travel isn't worth it or
they are bow hunters that sat on water holes for ten days.
That is a complication from the hide being salted and left to long at high temps.
We had this discussion on here a few months ago about storing hides if you weren't going to mount them right away. (I know that wasn't your problem)
If the temp on greasy skins ,cats etc. reaches high temps ( 110...
Have used a 300 wsm on 2 trips to Africa out of 5. 1st trip I ran Barnes tsx. Everything needed a couple rounds put in it and they were placed right. Was thinking I didn't bring enough gun. Friend had me change over to accubonds for the next trip. Did an excellent job on everything . I wouldn't...
I see a ton of damaged mounts from Africa. Problem is all the shippers pass the buck . No body will say who did it. That way no one pays.
I know a gal that's dip pack made it to the truck company here in Idaho. That night at the truck hub someone broke in, cracked the crate open stole her...
I haul a ton of photography gear to Africa . 2 video cameras, 1 big full frame mirroless camera , and a pocket camera. I have a good cell phone with me also. Cell photos are wide angle and do ok on small prints. But I rarely use it.
You might want to look at a small camera that fits easy in...
