    Good Gun Deals This Week

I’m doing a penny auction for my darned near new Blaser R8 .375 H&H synthetic professional with a high end Zeiss z rail scope.12 days left. On gun broker.

That is where I am blessed and fortunate. Tradition/gut is #1, 2 and 2 1/2. #3 is what I can do to a big ass boar hog!

It is more the “idea” of the s/s and the cartridge. I’m (perhaps stupidly) not concerned with what works best, most cost effective, etc. And, you are spot on. I love the 9.3x74r. My dream Blaser BD14 (coming) is 20ga/9.3x74r/.22 Hornet. There is just some fascination with that big, fat, slow...

Well folks, since I flashed my ass so naively with this almost-purchase- - - does anyone, to your knowledge, make a quality s/s .45-70? I’m not a big fan of o/u which rules out the Heym. I liked the Rizzini but it became a novelty. I’m 72 and stuck in FL so now I hunt big hogs every 3-4 weeks...

Indeed. The only doubles i have purchased were new, Rizzini rhino express .416 and Heym 26B 9.3 x 74R and both were fine. I should stick to new or rely on good folks like y’all if i am looking at anything used. I was mesmerized by the .45-70 aspect/uniqueness. Y’all really pulled my chestnuts...

    Anyone use a drilling?

    Just sold a VEB E.Thallheimer Suhl 12 x 12 x 7x65R. Killed a number of hogs. Have a Blaser BD14 20ga x 9.3x74R x .22 Hornet coming in a few months. Will readily deal with anything other than big/thick skin D.G.

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

Folks, if you want a fact based discussion, let’s talk physics(ballistics essentially), and physiology (neurobiology) . Remove the extraneous bs. I’ve shot them and/or i’ve dissected them. This is not a “sporting” topic or mystery. Significant ballistic research,(internal, external and terminal)...

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

The animals intentions and actions have no effect on the physics/ballistics and physiology of gun shot wounds. Disruption of the motor neuron tracts doesn’t care how “tough”, aggressive or pissed off ANY biological organism is. Just my view as a hunter and retired forensic pathologist.
  17. M

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

The rifle, as with the shotgun, at ten feet will, indeed, make one entrance hole ( although a “rat-eaten“ one from the shotgun). But the terminal(internal) ballistics cannot, necessarily, be equated. Those nine ( or, in some cases, 12) projectiles will not be coaxial/paralell.

Mercury recoil reducers, do they work?

Similar to Woodcarver, I made my own. 1. put buckshot in the buttstock hole 2. next comes a spring ( i used a .45 ACP recoil spring cut down a bit) that has a coin, similar to the buttstock hole diameter, which is epoxied to each end of the spring. 3. “squash“ it down with the butt pad and...

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

Rather than speculate, or rely (?) on other’s accounts regarding tungsten buckshot effectiveness, it is going to be necessary for y’all to PERSONALLY see what it is or is not capable of. Now, being 70+ , retired in Florida , I do this every 3-4 weeks. As background, I vary from a .416 Rigby T/C...

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

A bit more anecdotal follow-up for y’all. A week ago monday I shot a 180 lb boar hog at ~10 yards with 12 gauge cylinder bore 000 tungsten buckshot, I shot him, purposely, with a side shot to the head. Wound channels were thru-and- thru and the entire skull was grossly crepitant. It was a...

    Modern Muzzle Brakes

Or you get a quality recoil pad, a padded shooting vest and make darned sure the rifle is shouldered properly and this whole issue disappears. I am no he- man by any means and I am 71. Doing the above, I shoot my .458 win, .416 Rigby and .375 weekly to monthly in range conditions, seated or from...

Indeed. Seems like most good s*** and/or fun s*** is expensive. I will try some on a large boar hog and report back.

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

Clearly our experiences differ which is why this type of dialogue is important.
  25. M

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

You are exactly correct in that within a couple/few yards you get one large hole. The difference comes with the terminal ballistics. Those 9, 12 or 15 00/000 pellets will fan out upon entry into the animal, each perusing modestly different paths, and cause more damage than a single slug or...

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

The book “White Hunters” by Brian Herne extensively chronicles the history and culture of professional hunters and hunting in Africa from the late 19th century to the recent 70’s. It was very common for PH’s to follow-up wounded leopards with buckshot. It is mentioned so often that it seemed to...

Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

I’m a little late to this discussion but I have hunted/killed large boar hogs here in FL with my .416 Rigby, .458 win mag, .375 H&H, 45-70 405 gr solids AND 3” tungsten (TSS) 000 12 ga buckshot. The buckshot (ranges~7-10 yds) is absolutely devastating, even thru the very thick and tough shoulder...

Hello, i just bought my first 375h&h rifle

I have used a Heym 9:3x74r o/u in the 232 (?) gr as well as the more common 286(?9) gr on several good size hogs to great effect. I have also shot them with .375 h&h and noted no difference.

Hello, i just bought my first 375h&h rifle

Great hog rifle. I also use a Rizinni .416 Rigby and mod 70 win .458 win mag because the Caprivi strip is no longer possible. You get a great blood trail to follow in flooded palmetto swamps if you do not get an immediate kill, which is 95% of the time.

    What really is "Big Game"?

Big game defined! And they are nasty. Trapped them 55 yrs ago.

    What really is "Big Game"?

Depends on HOW your hunting too. If I am on the ground in swamp palmetto country, LARGE boar are CPX3 or 4 in my book ( 9.3 and up) I’ll settle for a well placed CPX2 from a tree stand.

A question for the Professional Hunters, European hunters and African hunters...

Boar. Invasive species, nasty temper, abundant, close by, cheap, no closed season, no limit, no license, no passport, any weapon, ANY method and the smaller sows taste great. And, my safari guns tend to work well!

    What really is "Big Game"?

If you are worried about being charged by it, bit by it or eaten by it, it is big game. I shoot large FL boar with a .458 win, .416 Rigby, 9.3x74R or .375 H&H. I save the 45-70 and .460 S&W carbine for the sows. No more Africa for me.

    Rizinni Rhino Express optic question

Got a Trijicon on it and it is great. Also have back-up option of scope. Got a Vortex Razor HD gen III illuminated 1-10x and rings for 11 mm dovetail. However, here’s the kicker. Rizinni Rhino Express optic question

This already has a rail screwed just ahead of the receiver beteween the barrels. I certainly would not want to replace it if it is there specifically to accept a mount. I think this thing is what is called an 11 mm dovetail rail. There are a number of red dot mounts that will go on them and a...

This is a Recknagle pic rail for an “11 mm dovetail mount”. Sounds to me like this MAY be the/an appropriate mount. Any thoughts?

    Rizinni Rhino Express optic question

Got some photos. The “top” part above the recessed and slanted dovetail cuts is 11 mm across. It just looks like a skinny, kinda shallow ungrooved pic rail with one small recess that looks like a recess for a recoil lug.

    Rizinni Rhino Express optic question

Just got N.I.B. I need to put some kind of red dot/ zero mag holographic sight on this. It certainly seems “ prepared” to accept some kind (?) of mount. There is a screwed-on thin rail of a type i am not familiar with that is beveled like a pic rail but is certainly not a pic. Does anyone have...

Advice on double rifle for wild hogs

I have had great success with my Heym 9.3 o/u with the 286 gr as well as the .460 S&W or .454 Casull out of my Thompson Center Prohunter carbine. I am in FL and the hogs i have hit were DRT. Same with a .270 or .308. Only hog I lost was a 12 ga sabot with poor shot placement; above the heart/...

    Heym Double Rifles

I have a Heym 26b, the poor man’s Heym o/u in 9.3 x 74r. Because it is such a light weapon, common, heavy 286 gr loads can “de-cock” the gun, hence no 2nd shot. I made a cheap, easy recoil eater that uses both increased weight and progressive spring damping of recoil. I filled the stock hole...
