Being a nurse, when I went on my first Africa trip this last June, this was one of the first questions I asked. Are there snakes, how likely am I to get bitten, and how far is the nearest hospital if I get bit. That being said, I didn't see 1 snake the entire trip (thank the Lord!) and we went...
Welcome to the family! I am the previously mentioned wife of @WFet . I see that you mentioned you would be bringing your family with you! It's an excellent family trip idea. I went on my first African hunt with my husband's family this past year and had a blast! As you dream and plan, feel free...
I never thought about the nitrile gloves! I am a nurse, so I have an ENDLESS supply of those at work. And, come to think of it, my hands always sweat when I wear them. I will definitely have to remember to take a handful of those next trip!!
Under Armour ColdGear is well known to me, but I completely forgot about it until now. I used to wear it when I ran track in high school. Good to know about the loose-fitting part, though. It makes complete sense when I think about it.
Unfortunately, when I was in Africa this past June I learned that not all of Africa is warm. We were unexpectedly in the Free State and, being unprepared for the colder climate, I was not adequately dressed. Because of this experience, I am starting to prepare earlier in order to get the best...
I wish I could claim the eye bleach comment, but sadly that was not my genius.
Unfortunately, I have bad circulation to my fingers (Raynaud's for the medically inclined), so they go numb when walking at even mild temperatures. I will most DEFINITELY be looking into the Cabela's items y'all...
Trying not to play this woman card too much, but I just have so many questions!
After lots of internet searching and finding few answers, I have decided to use a lifeline and ask the audience. I get cold really easily, particularly my hands, so I am looking for a hunting jacket that will...
My husband, @WFet , and I live in Franklin, TN. Although we look forward to making the pilgrimage to Dallas and Reno/Vegas each January, we would love to be a part of a chapter that is closer to home. Does anyone have any information or is anyone a part of any groups/chapters in the...
I have no intention on taking a planned shot at a range >250 yd. That was one of the reasons I purchased the scope and the caliber I did. I intend to use my rifle for everything from deer hunting to croc hunting and plains game in the future, however.
I have an included CDS dial with my new scope. I have been educated briefly on what it is, but I still have questions. Any advice on the best place to site in my rifle before I send it off to get custom made? I don't know if sighting in at 100yd, 200yd, etc. is ideal before sending that off.
@Hogpatrol ,@WFet only took 1 picture of the targets I shot at (I completely forgot) and it's posted with this picture in the forum. I will be taking the gun back out in a week or so and will be sure to take more pictures of my groupings then!
Ya, we only own 30-.06 and .308 caliber rifles. And no sticks at the moment. Using the sand bags will have to do for the time being! Looks like I’m just going to have to shoot my gun a lot to get used to the recoil. :p:D Darn...
So the rifle is officially sighted in! Well, at least until it gets warmer outside and I have more patience to sit outside and do some more fine tuning. After 30+ rounds, the barrel is officially broken in, cleaned, etc. We took a picture of the first target of shots, but there will be more to...
I will be sure to keep all of your advice in mind for future purchases, as I'm sure there will be many more.
And sadly, one of my beautiful sisters is recently married and the other is 1yr out of high school and newly enlisted. Maybe someday in the future though :p
I have looked on the Blaser website, but I haven't had much luck. According to some of the Blaser blogs I found, and can actually read because they're in English, they all just sight them in and shoot them without any detailed cleaning steps. I'm sure somewhere in the middle is the best method...
So what I gather from this.
1) Before I shoot it just clean it for dust and debris and oil it.
2) Shoot 2-3 shots and clean it.
3) Shoot 3-5 shots and clean it again.
4) Continue to clean regularly after a day at the range or firing multiple shots as I see fit based on the copper I can see...
@WAB @bruce moulds @Velo Dog
What do you mean by the copper being left in the barrel? And how do you know how much copper is being left behind? I’m guessing the residue left from cleaning?
Too many questions. Time for some in-depth research and YouTube searching!!
I will be sure to look into the proper way to break in my barrel then. I’ll at least give it the old college try before giving up. Thanks for the advice!! I never would have done it had you not mentioned it.
I've never heard this before. I'm sure my husband knows what you're talking about, but can you clarify what you mean by running the barrel in?
Also, the shop I bought my Blaser from already said once I have a scope mounted on the gun, they will bore site it for me there in the...
I have acquired a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40! Not the top of the line, but MORE than sufficient for everything I want to get into in the upcoming years. Can't wait to get mine mounted and out to the range! Hope I have a good a hunt as you did with croc when I get the chance!
I have acquired a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40! Finally found something that fit the budget and was worth getting! Waiting for it to arrive in the mail now.
Soon to follow, pictures of siting in and first time out at the range. WOOT WOOT!!
I have recently purchased my first hunting rifle and plan to hunt a crocodile in South Africa in 2020 if all goes well. Only piece I'm missing now is a scope!
Blaser R8 Professional Success .308WIN
Looking for scope with MAX magnification of 12, but will take higher if at the right price.
@JakeH I agree with you. With me just getting into hunting, I don’t foresee me shooting anything that’s over 300yd away. Whitetail, pig, plains game, etc. I’m just excited to go to the range with my new toy soon!
I love all the feedback. I am going today to look at a couple Leupolds. Sadly, we don’t have the biggest budget to work with, so I’m going to have to go with the old, trusty and reliable 3-9x40 or 50 ideally. Hopefully will have some pictures of the mounted scope for y’all by tomorrow.
