Powders, primers, bullets,.....prices and lack there of....and what substitutes?

IMR4350.. Not sure about Longshot, thought that was pistol powder, but Varget is fine. Its not really about velocity, but about port pressure and curve. Good M1 velocities can be had with the correct combinations. There is lots of good reading out there on it. Good pointed bullets especially...

Powders, primers, bullets,.....prices and lack there of....and what substitutes?

For your M1 the range is usually around IMR3031 to no slower than 4320, Varget, R15 range. The problem with slower powders is the pressure curve peaks at the wrong time for the op rod, and bent or busted rods start to appear. Its not common but its a good idea to stick with medium burn rate...

Powders, primers, bullets,.....prices and lack there of....and what substitutes?

Of course, been going on for some time. I tried to find some R16 the other day, Ha! Forget it. LGS is down on everything. Reloder powders are $10 a pound more than some others. When R19 was out I got some Hunter powder which is about the same burn rate and am liking it. Locally 4064 and 4350...

    Sunglasses, yes, no, type?

For sure, year 'round, even in the usually gray PNW. Eyes have always been sensitive to light. I wear them while hunting but try to get them off for the final stalk. I wear glasses like many of us old farts so rather than go with photogray or similar I use wrap arounds "as seen on TV!" I had...

South Africa to Reopen February 2021

Talked with Patrick at TWG the other day and he expects Emirates to cancel my tickets soon as well, but hasn't yet for my Sept trip which I canceled months ago. I have no confidence in SA opening this year for foreign hunters, despite some of the optimistic views of some. I just don't see it...

Wow. I know this site and others can be accessed by anyone, but posting on FB and other such places seems riskier than this. I don't FB, never have, never will. Not a good place to post hunting and gun stuff I suspect.

Sight, sound or smell, which evokes African Safari the most?

Probably wood smoke. One thing I had on my first two safaris but not since was a classic tent camp. One of the normal things in a tent camp is water warmed in big drums and then brought to your tent in the morning and evening for washing up. That is perhaps the most memory inducing thing to me...

    Zambia - Open for Hunting

Oh great, so have to present a clear test on arrival, then get tested again in country on day 7. Think I read elsewhere that you would have to travel to wherever the test is given. Doubt they will come to you! So one will lose at least a full day perhaps more to get another test. Right...

Thanks for the update Hank! If the demtards win down here, similar things may be attempted. They will have to work harder at it because it cannot just be decreed at some level of govt to mandate such things, but they will try. Keep us posted.

B Nelson is running his Whelens at or near .375 ballistics. His loads will not be for the faint of heart nor for all guns. However, some of his top loads are out of printed manuals. Neither of my Whelens are strong enough to stand his loads. They being a '95 Winchester and a 1903 Springfield...

Is any kind of hearing protection used on safari?

Absolutely! You can and SHOULD have some form of ear protection when hunting. The choices are many and varied as are prices of things. I like to use muffs that enhance hearing but cut off the sound of the shot. Sometimes they can be a PITA when not on a stalk, but when things are getting...
