    How they like to hunt

WHAT I DO LIKE: I enjoy more hunting activities or “hunting styles” if you prefer, than the two I have listed. But, the following two are my favorites, in order of preference. 1. Wandering far and wide, with rifle, binoculars and a sack lunch. The particular species is not near as important as...

    Advice needed before buying

Hi again WebleyGreene455, I apologize for any confusion I have caused. Yes and mostly no, I’m not thinking primarily of the 9.3x64 cartridge. Indeed I am thinking of your intended cartridge, the 9.3x62 one. The reason I mentioned the “64MM family of cartridges” as compared to the “57MM family...

    Advice needed before buying

I’m +1 with you Dave on this Zastava Mauser being an excellent basis for conversion to 9.2x62 caliber. Plus, at only $495.US, it is very affordable as well. Even the stock on this one will be a good one, after a bit of light refinishing. Way cheaper than re-stocking.

    Advice needed before buying

Hello WebleyGreene, Most of the magazines on the typical 8x57 Mauser are too short for the cartridge you want to use. A professional Gunsmith can modify a ‘98 Mauser action to accept what amounts to a “.30-06 length” magazine. However, this is expensive. That said, I too am quite fond of the...

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

Hello BeeMaa, I’ve not shot a leopard. That said, I have shot a fair pile of other critters with the .375 H&H. And, I have noticed exactly what Red Leg described about the .375, with softs sometimes (not usually but sometimes) failing to expand much if at all in small animals. That said, I have...

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

Fellow Rifle Enthusiasts, The .30-30 is essentially a miniature .450/400 NE, aka: .400 Jeffery 3” NE, (appearing pretty close to scale). Therefore, it seems to me that the .30-30 would be a fine cartridge for hunting smaller African species, such as certain “buck and boar” in thick African bush...

    Allure of the Ruger No1

Hi Kevin, I totally agree with you in that, the #1 Tropical Model is a very nice rifle all the same (great minds think alike). I hope to see a photo of your rifle if you restock it as you mention. Chequering is not as difficult as it seems that it should be. The bee in this beer is “time”. It...

    Allure of the Ruger No1

Gents, The first caribou I ever shot was with a Ruger #1 that I used to own, in the early 1980’s. I had put a Leupold compact 2.5x scope on it, in the factory rings. Like so many others here, I too am very fond of the Ruger single shot. At the end of the day, I agree with CAustin and others...

    AR-type Rifles

PS: Perhaps it goes without saying but, a poorly made AR could also prove to be as inaccurate as the 1970s and ‘80s vintage Mini-14s I had tried. The Colt HBAR Model AR that was once issued to me (late 1980’s), was delightfully accurate and reliable as well. Likewise the HBARS my team mates were...

    AR-type Rifles

Hi 375 Ruger Fan, 1. Unless Ruger has changed their specs, the Mini-14 may as well be a smooth bore, as accuracy in the one’s I have fired was without exception, simply terrible. 2. A well made AR Model does not need a “forward assist” gadget. Cheers, Velo Dog.

I like the Colt “H-Bar” but unfortunately, I do not own one these days. Now my AR is an FN-FAL, LOL.

Some things can never be bettered?

The Model 98 Mauser. Game meat grilling over a camp fire. Blunt shaped bullets with plenty of lead showing at the tip, especially bonded ones. Shotguns with two triggers. The Small Bore Ivory Hunter By Karamojo Bell

Bell was a great story teller. I really enjoyed his book: “The Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter”. .....well, except that he didn’t say much about the not just one, but two .416 Rigby Mausers and about 2,000 rounds of steel covered bullets that, he purchased from John Rigby & Company. He did...
