I was looking at some of my Jim Corbett books, figuring out which ones to take for reading in the leopard blind next week. I said oh man, let's go look at that classified listing again. Sold and relieved to see it! Kudos to buyer and seller.
To the original question (I didn't read 3 pages of replies), the 458 win mag was used extensively by Zim Parks with the old loads and bullets effectively. With modern powders kicking the 500's out more to spec and excellent solid bullets, the 458 win mag is more effective than ever. Move it...
From their website...We do not charge for baiting and the minimum of 12 hunting days (13 nights in camp) required is less than many Leopard hunting outfitters. This is a great offer and I believe they only do 2 leopards per year.
Any recommended reading or videos about hunting in Europe? One source on videos that I like is on MyOutdoorTV.com...lots of production quality videos on roe buck, driven boar, fallow, mouflon, stag, etc. like those that have Franz Albrecht featured. I haven't found any great contemporary...
I missed this report somehow. Congrats on a slam! They are a lot of fun. I've hunted turkey in about 25 states so far and have 2 slams. Every Osceola I get would be another slam completed for awhile! I think I've eight 3/4 slams waiting for another Osceola.
I also need to do Goulds and...
It all has a place here...trophy hunting for the biggest...hunting the oldest busted up trashy bulls and scrum caps...non-trophy bulls and cows and targeting them specifically...and the wild side of tuskless in the jesse. I don't care what floats your boat as long as it's legal. There's lots...
Who is offering all of those large bulls for $25k? Those are rare not common as far as I have seen. You can hardly find a leopard for 25k much less a large trophy ele.
I’m not sure what odds of success are lower means. Many (most) tuskless hunts I know about are successful. It’s not unusual for someone to take multiple tuskless in 1 hunt when going with a great operator like CMS or D&Y. I know people who have done 5 or more in one trip. That doesn’t sound...
Gateway drug indeed! Since doing my tuskless over 15 years ago, I've done most of the big 5 and chase DG anytime I get the opportunity. It's a fun and challenging hunt if you pick the right operator (as with anything). I barely chase PG since I like DG so much. We're all wired differently...
There is nothing wrong with a tuskless hunt and it's not less of an elephant hunt. No less than Buzz Charlton has said that. Some people jump up every time it's mentioned to say how bad it is, how unsporting it is, how shady it is. I will keep jumping up to say that's a broad brush and...
These are fantastic guns. I've owned 2 of them and taken them all over the place in every kind of weather condition and taken 35 species of waterfowl so far from teal to tundra swans. No issues...no failures...and I haven't babied them. This is my fav waterfowl gun.
I was told 10 years ago that tuskless population in Zim was around 3%. I think that was more specifically a reference to Zambezi valley. I think 10% is way too high. We know that tuskless is a genetic trait that is actually undesirable for elephants as it makes them more aggressive.
I welcome the info! I love watching the roe deer videos with Franz Albrecht and his friends. Those guys take roe deer VERY seriously. It's really interesting to me and there are many areas to travel and hunt roe deer in.
This is actually a great selling point for me. Owning a small business makes it hard to get away for longer trips. I would like the option of shorter trips more often. I also need to PM you about the roe deer. That’s a huge interest of mine and much easier to find success than the driven...
Good to hear as my own rig would be Blaser with Swaro...no upside to traveling with it if the same stuff is available there with much less hassle. I've never traveled to a hunt without a gun and all of the airport considerations. That would feel like a luxury to me!
Thanks for all of the replies and shared experiences. I know the odds of finding, joining and experiencing a version of Wild Boar Fever is not likely for a host of reasons mentioned here. It seems like the best thing would be either a combination of short experiences or finding a high stand...
I just got my first R8 after years of considering one. I look forward to working with it. One suggestion is to also add the rimfire conversion kit. That investment will pay you back if you are serious to practice with it.
I just had JJ mount a Trijicon on my 500ne double. He told me that he is doing around 3 of those conversions EVERY week. He highly recommends them for middle aged eyes.
If the eye relief is not correct on a typical scope, then there is a black ring. It's not supposed to be there. Big plus to a red dot is that it can't be there. Head position is not critical on a red dot, which is one of the reasons the military uses them in combat and the Wild Boar Fever guys...
I love big bores as much as anyone but you would have a hard time getting a faster kill than I got in July with the .375 300 TSX…down within 20 yards and death bellow in about 10 seconds. That’s what I hope for with the big guns.
When you can thread the needle through a hole in the thorns, etc it can really help on a hunt. Many of us have been presented with less than desirable shots in the bush. That accurate 375 will give a lot of confidence in those scenarios. You can’t put a price on that!
Thanks for your reply. I was hoping to get a response from you. I will reach out to HC. I always enjoy reading their materials.
Does anyone have any experience with Diana Hunting Tours?
The recent topic on running shots gets close to a topic I've been considering...for your first boar hunt in Europe, would you recommend a driven shoot or something else like stalking and/or high stands for individual boars? Also, where would you go and any recommendations on what time of year...
I shot mine with a 375 H&H 300 TSX. We never found the bullet so I’m going to assume the HB ate the bullet just to have the last word. They are sassy like that.
I know what you mean about shooting them. I was thrilled to get one but I don't want to shoot more. They are too cool and useful. Someone has to slap the leopards around a bit and keep them in line.
Stoffel is the famous escaping HB. He's actually in the Limpopo area I believe and everyone knows of him.
The main thing is getting a permit and having access to some kind of lighting or NV setup. You will most likely get one from a bait or bone pile. I got mine from Limpopo area last...
Ahh I just bought a Blaser R8 package or I would be interested. These are really nice rifles. I would love to have one in 7x57 and the 416 Rigby of course by Rigby.
It’s really easy to dip the barrel on moving shots and that’s really detrimental to good results. Anticipating the shot is a nice way of saying flinch. EVERYONE deals with it. Good shooters address it and everyone else pretends like it doesn’t affect them.
Here is a good article on Franz and his approach, background, etc. He says his dad almost made the Olympic shotgun team. Interesting that his dad taught him to only take the shot if you are confident of the conclusion...no guessing. He also uses a variety of lead methods....sustained, swing...
How about 2 of them playing tug of war with your body as the rope! That HB wounded all 3 of them and then calmly high stepped out of there without looking back. That's bad ass. They are almost mythical. When we brought mine back into camp all the local workers came out to see it and the...
Wily pheasants and strong wind is a wicked combination. I really miss hunting them. A triple is really rare. You won't forget that one. I saw someone double on hens one time...ugh.
Fundamentals are always good to work on with any weapon but I think there are differences that don’t translate across disciplines. There is a lot to learn from follow through on any moving target and that helps a lot. Proper dry firing with the same weapon can make a huge difference.
You can...
HB with a crossbow...how cool is that?! I have a 10 pt crossbow that would handle that. The wild dogs is something I haven't seen yet. Very nice.
One interesting thing about HB's is how much they stink! Whew...nasty.
