.338 Win Mag loads..help me decide!

I started another thread here a while back after I purchased a new in the box (made in 1979) Ruger M77 in .338 Win Mag. for my next Africa hunt. Several members here helped me gather load data and components. Thankyou!!! I have spent the last six weeks working up loads. The six below were...

    Gravedigger Broadhead Test

So.....I like guns but archery is my thing. Been at it for over 40 years, hundreds of animals taken with a bow from squirrel to Blue Wildebeest. Mechanical broad heads are prone to spectacular success and at times spectacular failures. Moving parts increase the variables and make results...

I was mad about the price of ammo....Until I tooled up to reload a new caliber! # .338 Win Mag

Very interesting! I don't know how you can get enough powder in that relatively small case to drive 225 grains at 2900 fps.

Okay....you made me look!;) What is the recipe for this 225gr, 2900fps 35 Whelen load? After a pretty extensive search of the published data the fastest 225gr 35 Whelen load I could find is 2618fps. Fastest .338 Win Mag .225gr load I could find 2944fps. I not selling the .338WM yet!!!:p

I'll do that. I'll shoot it at the shop as soon as I get my rifle back, should be next week. Just won't be able to take it home for 6-7 months.

B&T MonoBlock .338 Lap This....I ordered it never seen one before I got this one. Specs are really good, they are actually made in Switzerland. Everything else I have is either SilencerCo or Griffin.

I sell Silencers...and guns and other cool stuff. The approvals we are getting back right now on the E-Files were out for about 6 1/2 months. We still have a few paper submissions out that are 18 months old. When the E-file first started we were getting approvals in 60-70 days.....not anymore!

Thankyou! Some one else already hooked me up with brass. Yep my Ruger .338WM is the original M77 with the tang safety. The wood and bluing are beautiful. I dropped it off today to get the barrel threaded, already submitted the E-File for a .338 can.

1st safari in RSA - lessons learned

Great tips! I will say I'll always go in July or August so your clothing commendations don't apply then. Very pleasant during their winter, averages were mid 40s at night and mid 70s during the day. I can do without the heat!!

I decided I wanted a new rifle for my next plains game hunt in August so I headed to a gun show to see what jumped out at me. I ended up with a beautiful Ruger M77 in .338 Win Mag. It was made in 1979 and was new in the box! I have to admit I am totally infatuated with this Rifle. So its time...

I had a great experience on my first African plains game hunt last year, nine trophies in seven days of hunting. Seven with my .308 and two with a compound bow. Work-up to May 2023, SA plains game

Distance you can dial up on a CDS scope depends on your scope and load. VX-3 HD on my .308 with a 200 yard zero I get a little over 600 yards. One revolution of the turret on the VX-3. VX-5 HD on my 300WM, and again a 200 yard zero it will dial to 1200 yards. The VX-5 allows two complete turns...

    Cross wildebeest off the list?

The Blue was a 40 yard bow shot, he stumbled a little over 30 yards and was done. The Black was a 303 yard shot, .308 with a 165gr Fed TBT bullet. He collapsed in place. You can see the the entries in both pics. Like everyone has said, hit them in the right spot and they will go down.

I would zero at 200. 1/2 my shots on our hunt in SA last year were between 200 and a little over 300 yards. 300 yards with a 200 yard zero is a 8-9 inch hold over.

Work-up to May 2023, SA plains game

For the VAST majority of hunters the Leupold CDS system is simple and effective for any situation they will find themselves in. For example, on my .300 WM 165 gr Federal TBT with a 200 yard zero: 300 Yards Sea level and 90 degrees F, 6.3 inch drop . 7500 Ft and 20 degrees F 6.1 inch drop...
