I’ve shot a very large male one with a 200Gr Nobler Partition out of a .300 Winchester Magnum. It was a one shot kill and the leopard was absolutely hammered.

Strangely, Northfork no longer appears to list any calibers under their Flat Point Solid and Cup Nosed Solid options anymore.
At your budget, I’d say that the currently manufactured Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in .416 Remington Magnum would be the most safe bet.
If you’re set on the .416 Rigby, then (among currently manufactured NON BESPOKE options) I’d go with a Mauser 98 Magnum (either Standard or Diplomat)...
Not with the Hornady DGS. But with the old Hornady 300Gr round nosed steel jacketed F.M.J solid (1982). It was a single side brain shot.
Ammunition was Remington factory loads (which were utilizing Hornady solids at the time). Rifle was a BRNO ZKK602 in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum.
During the 1700s-1800s, Great Britain colonized us (Asians & Africans) and controlled what we did in our own countries. They explicitly said that they knew what was better for us than we did. They officially stopped colonizing us between the 1940s-1960s. But we have gained independence from...
I’ve successfully taken all African plains game (including eland bull) with my 7x57mm Mauser Churchill Gunmakers Model Deluxe. Mostly with 1 shot kills.
Initially, I used the (now discontinued) Winchester Super-X 175Gr cup & core soft point.
Currently, I use Hendershots Custom Loaded...
I’ll ask Jeff again. I haven’t pursued the issue much in the last few weeks. But soon as I get the most up to date law on this matter, I’ll post it here.
Loading 7x57mm Mauser ammunition with 175Gr Hornady Interlocks
Loading .375 Holland & Holland Magnum ammunition with 300Gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or Rhino Solid Shanks
Loading .505 Gibbs ammunition with 600Gr Northfork Flat Point Solids & Cup Point Solids
Offering factory loaded ammunition...
Thanks, R.M.C. I totally agree. I use buckshot for Muntjac deer, Axis deer and wild boars. Anything larger, and I prefer using my 7mm Mauser or whatever center fire rifle I have around me.
I recently ran some newly manufactured Federal (PremiumCopper Plated) and Remington (Express) 3 Inch...
Why, thank you so much, Bapu. I last visited India (Kuch Bihar) in 1977. During the 1960s, I frequently travelled to Calcutta with my parents because my aunt (father’s sister) used to live there at the time. There used to be an old gun store back then in Calcutta, called “D.B. Biswas”. They...
Thanks.
At that time, I was working a government job in a forest department of a third world country which was only 10 years into it's independence. We used what we had.
I bought that Pakistani shotgun from a government warehouse (where all the confiscated firearms of criminals are stored)...
Thanks, Wheels
After the ‘88 incident, I finally learnt my lesson after decided that there’s a good reason why buckshot is called “Buckshot” and not “Tigershot”. That’s why I eventually bought my 7mm Mauser (with which I shot the last man eater in ‘89). But even he lived for no less than 3...
Very good choice, Pondoro. My predecessor, Yousif Salauddin Ahmad (the author of “With The Wild Animals Of Bengal”) used to own a lovely best grade W.J Jeffery boxlock ejector in .450/400 Nitro Express (3 1/4”) With which he shot 9 man eating Royal Bengal tigers between 1928 and 1948 while...
Yes, Pondoro. The 12 gauge Paradox (loaded with the 730-750Gr soft lead bullet) used to be an absolutely devastating combo against Royal Bengal tigers.
Definitely, WAB. The first tiger (that I shot in ‘81) actually lived for 7 hours after I shot him with the same shotgun/buckshot combination. 6 of the 8 L.G pellets in the chest had completely failed to get through his frontal chest muscles and into his heart. He only died eventually, because...
If only government officials of third world countries thought like you. After the Wildlife Conservation Act-1973 (courtesy of pressure from U.K and India) was passed, killing Royal Bengal tigers became a criminal offense (carrying a 14 year prison sentence). After ‘73, only 4 man eating Royal...
Thanks, Hitman. Contrary to what many authors write, tiger hunting is very much a matter of trial and error. Luck also plays a very important part.
I learnt the hard way in ‘88 that artificial baits don’t work for enticing Sundarban tigers (esp. one that‘s turned man eater). Only waiting to...
My pleasure, Vertigo. I find it absolutely hilarious how some of these stories have hunters blowing away Royal Bengal tigers like varmints.
The first man eater died 7 hours after I shot him. The second man eater (as detailed in this story) died 4 hours after I shot him. The last one (which I...
A postmortem revealed that all 8 pellets from the Eley Alphamax L.G cartridge had hit the animal in the frontal region, with at 7 L.G pellets striking the man eater in the chestal area and 1 L.G pellet striking him in the throat. The L.G pellets which had struck the tiger in the chest, had...
At 10:15 PM, Mustapha could feel as if we were not alone anymore. He silently motioned me to get ready, as his hand tightly gripped the 5-cell torchlight. I could faintly hear the sound of a large carnivora chomping down on copious amounts of raw meat. I readied my 12 bore shotgun, as Mustapha...
Mustapha and I spent the next 2 nights on the macchan in a similar manner, all in the hopes that the man eater would eventually come to feed on the carcass of the Bengal bush boar. But it never happened. The carcass gradually rotted and became putrid, but something very revealing occurred...
With the macchan constructed, I decided now we needed some appropriate bait. Previous experience from the incident in Talpatti in 1987 had taught me that live baits are useless for enticing Royal Bengal tigers in the Sundarbans (even more so for one which has turned man eater). So I thought of...
Taking along my 12 bore Sikender, my .22 Long Rifle caliber BRNO Model 2 bolt action rifle (which I had purchased from a gun shop in Dacca by the name of “Shikar O Shikari” in 1982) and my .32 ACP caliber Webley Model 1921 (and a good supply of cartridges for all 3 firearms), I headed for the...
But now, only half the problem had been resolved. Who was to tie the bell around the cat? In other words, who was to actually attempt to kill the Royal Bengal tiger? Being the official Shikari of the Sundarban Department of Forests, old Pachabdi was naturally the first man to be approached. And...
The year was 1988 and I was trying my best to continue to flawlessly perform my duties as the Divisional Forest Officer of the Sundarbans. It was at this time, that reports of a man eating Royal Bengal tiger operating in the Chand Pai forest range had begun to surface. The animal had already...
Hey, gents. I’ve been throwing together a little book about my tiger hunting experiences since I’ve been told that there’s a market for this sort of thing. As many of you know, I used to be the D.F.O (Divisional Forest Officer) of the Sundarban mangrove forests from ‘81 to ‘89.
After the...
I wrote a letter to Kynamco in the summer of 2021, inquiring about the availability of.600 Nitro Express ammunition. I was informed by a gent named Ben (the Works Manager) that Kynamco last manufactured .600 Nitro Express and .577 Nitro Express ammunition in 2019. And were hoping to restart...
