Opinion of the .577 2-3/4” NItro

Rookhawk, Thanks so much for the insight. I’m glad guys with your knowledge and these forums exist to provide me a resource to help avoid a regretful sale. This actually will be my first double, and I fully intend on using it for dangerous game. Back to searching we go!

Thanks Red Leg for the info. I’m going to toss this one around and see if it comes down any more in price. Seems a little steep for what it is.

Opinion of the .577 2-3/4” NItro

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, this Hollis was made in 1904 I believe and is a true full nitro. Seems like I’ve heard that in the .577 guns, anything less than full 3” velocity will give you penetration issues...that being said I would probably only use it on buff and smaller. Maybe Hawk...

Opinion of the .577 2-3/4” NItro

Hello all, A vintage Hollis double chambered for the .577 2-3/4” shell recently appeared for sale on the web not to long ago. This rifle is regulated with the 750 grain bullet at 1800 fps. What’s your opinion on this caliber and bullet weight? Woodleigh lists a minimum impact velocity of 1800...

    450/400 3-1/4”

Unfortunately, I called Huntington’s yesterday and they are no longer taking special orders...apparently RCBS is no longer making them. Even better is that I placed an order with CH4D for a set of 297/250 rook dies, and I should be receiving them this month. The order was placed in 2017!

    450/400 3-1/4”

Guys, Just wondering...would it be possible to reload 3-1/4” cases with standard 3” die set? I’m seeing a few 3-1/4” rifles for sale, but can’t find any dies without a year long wait.

    Best .338

Lbar, I have the exact same rifle in .338. I took my first elk with it in October with plain old 250 grain Hornady soft points. It did the job well. I am currently working on developing loads with lighter bullets for flatter trajectory.

Buffalo Hunting Safari in Namibia with Verney-Carron Double Rifles

Very cool video, and thanks Jerome for taking the time to answer questions and take my measurements at DSC 2019! It's not real clear, but I think I can make out two 7's on the case after ejection, is the double that took the buff a .577?

My Plain Jane has a Heart of Gold

Shootist, Glad you are getting some great accuracy with this rifle! As for the bedding, all the new production M70 Safari Express Winchesters have some bedding done, I believe at both points where the action screws are. Other than that, I personally haven’t touched the thing as far as bedding...

Won a Safari Hunting Package, Need Two Others

Well guys, received the trophy fee list today for my "prize". As you all suspected, each animal was anywhere from 50% to 100% higher than a few other outfitters in the same area. Basically, the cost would be about the same as paying lower trophy fees and the daily fee. Thanks to everyone for the...

Wow, didn’t realize this was such a common scam! I figured it sounded to good to be true. Thanks everyone for the heads up, at least now I’ll be able to spot a scam like this going forward.

Hello all, I was browsing through my latest GSS (Global Sporting Safaris) outfitter catalog, and noticed they had a "prize code" on the address box. Typed in my code, and what do ya know, I won a plains game hunting package in South Africa. Based on the return email I received, I won a plains...

Whitworth Arms “Bad Boy Shot and Ball”

All, Was wondering if anyone has any experience with these. They are the same shotguns as “Dickinson Arms” sold by Cabela’s. They are modified with front and rear sights, and regulated for Brenneke slugs. I was thinking about picking one up for Southern Michigan deer hunting in the shotgun...

    Feeding Issues, please help!

Stuart, Yesterday I had some time to work on the feeding issue with my rifle...I removed the vertical tabs like you suggested (I ground mine off with the dremel, as opposed to cut them out) and now my rifle feeds perfect! I loaded three dummy rounds and cycled them through the action fast and...

    Feeding Issues, please help!

Yes...very different. The 404 is a non-belted case, and is about the same diameter all the way to the shoulder as the belt on a 375. I actually found a source for purchasing a mag follower for the M70’s that were produced in 300 ultra mag. I might purchase one of those to see if it works any...

Hello all, I purchased a new production (Portugal) M70 Safari Express in .375, for the sole purpose of having it re-barreled to .404. When I received it back from getting it re-barreled, the gun shot shot very well, and worked great EXCEPT for the following issue: If I load three rounds in...

.500 or .577 for Next Double?

Good morning all...I figured I would post a followup to this thread. .500 or .577 for Next Double?

Was reading "African Rifles and Cartridges" this morning by John Taylor this morning while taking care of my 7-month old sun...he seemed to like the .577 cartridge...said it is great for jumbo, rhino, and buff but far too powerful for anything smaller. He recommended that it be used as a...

.500 or .577 for Next Double?

Thanks to all again for the recent posts! At this point, having never fired a double before, I may stick to a lighter (comparatively) caliber at first. I typically avoid the standard calibers that everyone else has, so instead of going with a 470, I may go with a 450, just to be different. I’d...

.500 or .577 for Next Double?

Thanks again redleg...fortunately for me I grew up hunting deer in southwest MI, so I was forced to use a rifled pump shotgun with open sights. Nowadays, my deer rifle is a M94 with open sights...not going to say I’m 100% with them, but I’m pretty confident inside 100 yds. I also shoot a Garand...

.500 or .577 for Next Double?

Thanks redleg. Do you recall how much that H&H weighed? I’m wondering if a 13 lb .577 would still fit in the “manageable” catagory! That being said, I’m beginning to see the consensus of the group here...for a hunting tool, the .577 may not be the best choice. I wouldn’t want to spend $8k extra...

.500 or .577 for Next Double?

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far! Totally understandable about the weight of the rifle, but I am still in decent shape, and walking with a few extra pounds won’t kill me, at least not yet! As for the 600NE suggestion, one has to draw the line somewhere! Great advice so far, keep the...
