Is Ackley an improvement? Tikka compatible?

I don't have a 280 AI but I have a 60s vintage BDL in 270. (not improved) I get 3000 fps with 150g Partition out of a 22" barrel and have for too many years to count. I use Remington brass, H4831 and CCI magnum rifle primers. No pressure signs, I do 10 reloads per case then throw them out...

Wanting .458 win mag chronograph results of factory

I agree go with the 416 Rigby. A much better cartridge. You can buy factory Norma ammo with 450g Woodleigh softpoints for your 416 Rigby if you decide you want to shoot heavier bullets than 400g. If you ever decide the recoil is too feeble, you can rebarrel to 450 Rigby (a lovely round).

My CZ 550 does that as well but required some work. Then again 500 Jeffery's are notoriously hard to make feed and extract.

    Recoil Reducers

I have two 12 oz mercury recoil reducers installed in my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. They came standard with one from the custom shop. When I told them I wanted the balance point to be at the center of the magazine floor plate, they recommended adding a second one. The rifle weighs 12 lbs with...

    Back country carry gun

My guide on my brown bear hunt in upper Togiak lake had a chest holster for his 44 Mag revolver. As we settled into our sleeping bags we could hear the bears 30 feet away fishing for salmon. He showed me his revolver. I asked how he was going to get to it when a 1000 lb bear collapsed our...

Big Bore Rifles, How Much Do you Actually Shoot Them?

About once a month. I put 5 or 10 rounds downrange with my 500 Jeffery (one off the bench, the rest off hand or kneeling with a sling). The 500 Jeff is always dialed in, so thats all I need to do. I typically will shoot 50 or so rounds with my little 270 Weatherby and a couple of hundred...

    460 Weatherby to 458 Lott

An easier conversion is to a 495 ASquare. You'd have a unique rifle in a really nice cartridge, that will not exceed the Joule limit. Unfortunately the 500 A2 does exceed the limite and for either one you will need to be a handloader.

    Back country carry gun

Better a powerful semi-auto (Glock 20 in 10mm or Springfield V16 in 45 Super) shooting Buffalo Bore hardcast that we shoot well, than a heavy revolver in a larger caliber that we don't. If the handgun is relatively light (compared to a 44 Mag or 454 Casuul) and compact, you're more likely to...

    270 Weatherby?

I bought a used (has some scars) Weatherby Mark V in 270 Weatherby Magnum for $800 from Cabelas. I've hit a scuba tank at 845 yards with it 5 times in a row (so that's about 1 MOA) with Weatherby factory ammo (150g Partitions at 3250 fps). It's kick is like a 30-06 shooting 180g bullets so...

    Got the CZ blues

My CZ 550 action was made in the Czech republic, but all the barrels from the CZ Custom Shop used to be McGowan barrels. My 500 Jeffery barrel is a McGowan 1 in 10" twist, it will turn in your hand if you grip the forearm too lightly, which was a strange feeling the first time it happened to...

You might want to look for one of these if you like engraving. Model 70, CRF, limited edition. I think they were made in 375 H&H, 416 Rem, 458 Win Mag and my favorite 470 Capstick. They typically go for just under $4k. I almost bought one myself in 470 Capstick from Cabelas...

.257 Weatherby Magnum on 300 to 500 lbs antelopes - opinions please

Agree! I shot and killed many elk, black bear, deer and javelina with my BDL in 270 Win which I gave to my son. Having given up my 270 Win, I bought the 270 Weatherby. 150g Partitions were used on all of them, though I like the A-Frames a lot and shoot them exclusively in my 375 Weatherby.

30-06 AI and the 300 Winnie

In my opinion the Weatherby calibers get no respect. A lot of it due to Roy's advertising, and his somewhat fancy looking rifles. Several 3 shot groups from my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery at 50 yards. It also shoots well under 2" at 200 yards. I fired for groups at 50 yards just to check it out when I first sighted it in. My handloads, 570g TSX, 2250 fps chrono'd. Furthest shot so far, cow elk at 225 yards. She didn't get up.

    Recoil Mitigation

Here's our Rem XCR II that weighs 7 1/2 lbs in 375 Weatherby (including scope and rings). I'm not a recoil sponge, but with factory 375 H&H ammunition (Remington Premier Safari grade 375 H&H 300g A-Frames at 2500 fps) recoil is mellow not sharp at all. With Weatherby ammo, 300g Partitions at...

    Recoil Mitigation

Also dry fire a lot even at the range at first. If you find you're still right on target after two or three dry fires, then fire a live round, rinse and repeat. That and either a Past recoil pad or a lip on limbsaver will really help. After awhile you won't need to do any of these things.

    Recoil Mitigation

I have a Mark V in 270 Weatherby as well. The recoil of a 375 H&H is maybe twice as much but is slower. How does your 375 H&H fit you? Is the length of pull right? If it's a bit short consider putting on a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad over your current recoil pad. It makes a lot of...

.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

It's hard to beat a 270 for NA big game shooting a 150g Partition at 2900 to 3000 fps (I get just over 3000 fps with my handloads with no pressure signs). Light recoil, flat trajectory, hard hitting, nostalgia aside.

    Compare Recoil

My 12 lb 500 Jeffery (includes Leupold 1.5-5x scope) shooting a 570g bullet at 2300 fps with 103g of H4895 generates 88 ft lbs of recoil, with a recoil velocity of 21.74. It's not a stiff load, but a little below max and the faster powder cuts down on recoil. Recoil is sporty. When shooting...

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

I'd be fine with a Rem 700 BDL in 270 or a 7x57 in a Mauser (not a sporterized one) rifle. A 270 shooting factory 130g bullets doesn't kick much, my sons started on mine at 9 years old. It really depends on the make and condition of the rifles, hard to go wrong with either caliber.

Experience shooting small plains game and deer with big bores?

Shot a cow elk at 225 yards with my 500 Jeffery two years ago, hope to get a bull this year. Used my normal load of a 570g TSX at 2300 fps. I sight it in 2 1/2" high at 100 yards, so it's dead on at 25 yards and 175 yards. The TSX still expanded at that range and left a desert plate sized...

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

A 9 lb Lott is no joke. My normal 500 Jeffery load is a 570g TSX backed by 103g H4895 for 2300 fps. So the recoil out of my 12 lb 500 Jeffery is probably pretty close to your 9 lb Lott. Offhand it's blast, from the bench not so much.

    .500 Jeffery whats your opinion

I think the CZ 550 is a little small (bolt face wise) for the 505 Gibbs even, a GMA Magnum action is a better choice. That's why I went with a 500 Jeffery. Took patience and 3 gunsmiths (more time than money) to get it right. Everything down to the magazine size, magazine follower machining...

Or a 450 Rigby :) I would try longer bullets. If 500g bullets work I would load some dummy rounds with various bullets you think you might want to use. I would then cycle them through, slow, fast, and make sure it's absolutely reliable.

I've finally reached the point of being comfortable with my .416!

I have a Leupold 1.5 - 5x scope on my 500 Jeffery and it has 4" of eye relief. At first I was real careful when shooting it with a scope, but now it just comes up naturally and I don't even think about it.
