Ask what type of hunt it will be. Some outfits want the max no of hunters in a drive/block which means they will mix you in with others. Not my thing. I like to follow good dogs through the fields with one or two friends.

Rigby Highland Stalker .275 vs 30-06

While some of the caliber suggestions are interesting, I believe that the only calibers the highland stalker is offered in are: .275 Rigby, .308, .30-06, 8x57 and 9.3x62. Rigby will make you a rifle in any caliber you like, but it will be a London Best if it is not one of their standard...

    USA: Alaska Wolf Hunt

The tree huggers have tried to stop wolf hunting and control shooting, believe me. When we started aerial gunning wolves again they threatened to boycott the state if we didn’t stop. The Governor’s response was classic, basically ‘great, we didn’t want you up here anyway!’ My buddy and I...

Rigby Highland Stalker .275 vs 30-06

I certainly respect your opinion Bob, but don’t forget that the Rigby is a Mauser just as the originals were. The highland stalker has as many Mauser stampings as Rigby. It is a beautifully balanced rifle with plenty of punch and very mild recoil. I wouldn’t part with mine (my wife’s actually as...

Grizzly bear fatally mauls hunter in Alaska state park

That was not my observation in Alaska. My buddy shot one off his horse in Fairbanks and called the boys to come get their d$&@ bear. He refused to skin it for them. No issues, I think they were embarrassed to have let it cause so much havoc in our area. Another buddy shot one on a walk in...

Rigby Highland Stalker .275 vs 30-06

I would go with either a .275 or a 9.3x62 in the highland stalker. Either caliber would do everything you want. Given that you have AHR CZ’s in 7x57 and .30-06, why not venture out a bit and go with the 9.3? I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I know there are instances where no knock warrants may be necessary. However, if someone comes busting into my home unannounced they are going to be met with extreme force, likely much more lethal than what they are carrying. They’d better be sure they’ve got the right house!

Grizzly bear fatally mauls hunter in Alaska state park

Having lived and hunted in Alaska and Wyoming, I found the bears near Yellowstone much more aggressive on kills than those in Alaska. However there was one year on Kodak when the berry crop failed. Those bear were crazy aggressive!

    Heym or Dakota?

Wow, you’d better get a pair at that price! But seriously, wouldn’t a Rigby Big Game in .416 Rigby and a Rigby Highland Stalker in .275 Rigby be a nice pair of rifles to travel the world with?

    Heym or Dakota?

We see them new in the US in that price range. I would definitely go with the Rigby although the Heym is stellar. I have the Rigby (or my wife does[emoji41]) highland stalker in 9.3x62. It’s a fantastic rifle.

    Man-in-the-middle caliber

Such an interesting thread. In the US we tend to go on hunts for a single species. As a result we take a rifle optimal for the species and the conditions. In Africa, you tend to take what the bush gives you. Last year, heading back to the vehicle after an aborted mission on buffalo, we came...

.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

I bought a bunch of Norma pre COVID. It was more than Win or Rem but not crazy. I’ve never had any problem getting brass and I’ve been loading 7x57 since the ‘80’s. I understand many things are tough to get right now. I wouldn’t know as I laid in plenty for everything I load.

9.3x62 bedding job. Some input please before I pull the trigger.

Nice work. You should be fine, it’s not a heavy recoiling caliber. You may want to check behind the tang. A lighter stock like this is more susceptible through the wrist.

I know some very good PH’s who are not fans of the .416’s but give high marks to the .404. Something about the .404 bullet setting up better for better straight line penetration. Having no experience with either the .416 or .404 I find this very curious. Has anyone else heard this?

Is an illuminated reticle essential for Cape buffalo hunting?

Valid question. I’ve shot buffalo that could easily have been taken with iron sights. However, I’ve also shot buffalo in the shadows in the brush where a shot with open sights would have been ill advised. You would have to be willing to pass on these opportunities to hunt without a scope...
