New Jersey canceled Black Bear hunting 2021

Watch Murphy... when a black bear shows up in his yard, then has one of his policeman guards kill it, then have it all recorded by a passerby on their cell phone then get slammed on social media again for being a hypocrite. That would be poetic justice.

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

No, the RCBS dies don't FL resize the cases. They just have a sizing ring and wouldn't size the neck down enough.I am using an Ideal brass shotshell die fprobably from the 30's or 40's. It is literally just a piece of tool steel billet milled the correct dimension internally. I force the...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

If there was a way @IvW that I could send you some slugs I would happily do it for just the cost of shipping. However, I am pretty sure it is not only illegal, but from what I hear of the SA postal system, they would likely never get to you anyway.

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

I would definitely add a gas seal.you won't get much pressure without it. Then put at least a hard fiber wad directly under the bullet. Or better yet, cut the petals off one of these, add a hard fiber wad to the top of it then screw/glue it to the base of the bullet. It already has a gas seal...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

Ok, so... lots of stuff here. You're technically correct that the wad column does add some weight, but realistically it is probably less that 10 grains and that amounts to not a whole lot. What does matter a whole lot more is the amount of cushion wadding in the shell and the type of wadding...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

There is a gas seal on top of the powder, a 0.25" hard spacer on top of that, a 0.5" fiber cushion wad on that, then another 0.25" hard spacer and then the bullet is pressed into it. They make up a compressed column in the case. Your cases might need more or less wadding. Mine are 2.5" long...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

Right. The fin in the back drag stabilizes it. Accurate molds does sell a mold you can have a hollow base pin cut for. Then figure out a way to glue the cushion part of a shotwad about 3cm long onto the base with a post that you can glue into the hollow cavity. Thats really all that brenneke...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

The thick cases work great. Mine are made by Rocky Mt. Cartridge and are thick walled as well. I have to use my woodworkers vice with a space cut to the length of the loaded round. I squish the bullet in with the vice until it bottoms out on the spacer. Is your barrel rifled? I doubt if these...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

I would get a soft lead ball (fishing sinker?) That is bigger than the bore by a little bit. Then get a 5/8" (16mm) wood dowel rod and a mallet and pound that lead chunk down the barrel. Then, using a micrometer, measure the widest part between the grooves on the lead chunk, and order a slug...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

Right after I posted that I went to ballistic products and they had 3" clear fiocchi hulls in stock I ordered a bag of 100 of them. I dont use that many rounds out of that gun per year so 100 should last a good long time.

These are from accuratemolds.com mold number 73-775S Here is the link: https://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=73-775S You'll have to slug your barrel. I ordered my mold to drop them at 0.732". Your mileage may vary but they form a good seal in my gun. I lube them with a mix of...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

I am loading them to around 1,150 fps with a charge of blue dot. The gun (an H&R Slug hunter with a 19" barrel) can likely go higher but my shoulder won't appreciate it. I actually get better accuracy by roll crimping them in plastic hulls (I just can't buy 3" hulls anymore because they are...

    12 ga. .690 Round Ball

I never have tried a round ball. These are my 12 bore loads. Though I only have one coyote to claim with them so far. The bullet dwarfs a 9mm round. They are 775 grain wadcutters cast from an accurate arms mold, loaded to about 1,150 fps... and a little overkill for a coyote. I'm glad I am not...

Ruger M77 416 Rigby on GI

Its sad that Bill is gone. His tenure was the golden age of Ruger. Ruger today produces, at best, mediocre guns of moderate fit and finish and yet they ask ridiculous prices for them. An M77 costs the same as a Winchester M70 yet the M70 is miles ahead of a Hawkeye (the Hawkeye is just a MKII...

.458 winchester silk purse from a sows ear project

For sure! I am also thinking that 7.5lbs is WAYYY too light for a .458. I had a Ruger M77 Hawkeye African in .416 Ruger that from the factory came at 7.75lbs. I added lead filled copper pipes to the buttstock and the forend to get it up to 9.5 lbs then added a 1.25" thick recoil pad. That made...

.458 winchester silk purse from a sows ear project

Yeah I don't drill and tap barrels. For one thing, they are usually reall tough steel so I have a fear of breaking a tap off in them. The second thing is a fear of blowing through. This one especially doesnt have a wole lot of meat on it. I will make a nice 1"x 7/8"x1/2" block and solder it to...

I might do something similar with this one although I will probaby solder the block to the barrel. My Winchester. 375 had a similar block bedded into the forend.

.458 winchester silk purse from a sows ear project

I fired 3 rounds of 500 grain@ 2,125 fps offhand before I pulled it all apart and it gave me a recoil headache. I have never had a gun do that to me offhand before.

.458 winchester silk purse from a sows ear project

Good information! The stock is going to have metal reinforcement bedded in behind the recoil lug, behind the tang and a rod down through the wrist to reinforce it. I had contemptated soldering a block to the bottom of the barrel to bed into the forend. The rifle is way too light so I am going to...

.458 winchester silk purse from a sows ear project

So after hours and hours of carefully sanding down to 320 grit... I have a Whitworth with the bluing removed where it can be rust blued and most of the pits removed. The ones that remain are light enough that they will be hidden by the rust bluing.

    Barnes TSX reviews/question

120 grain barnes TTSX. 6.5X55, MV: 2,700FPS This is the only one I ever recovered. The low impact velocity (2,500fps) probably accounts for the fact that it isnt opened all the way. This one went, IIRC, 22" up the spine as he was running. The first shot killed him. This was the follow up...

Best .45 ACP round for black bear protection

Run those CEBs out of .45 super brass at 1,250 fps in a fully supported .45 ACP pistol and they would punch most of the way through a decent size black bear end to end!

Wanted Blaser R8 Worn Out Barrel

As to whether they are better than other barrels... an overpriced item doesnt sell in a free market. Wanted Blaser R8 Worn Out Barrel

I still think you'll have a hard time convincing someone to give you a $2,500 barrel, for the price of shipping, because it shoots a quarter at 100 yards rather than a dime. A lot of guys on here, including myself, dont get overly worried about the "mechanical" accuracy of their rifles because...

Wanted Blaser R8 Worn Out Barrel

I dont know as you'll find too many a worn out blaser barrel. Most hunters aren't running them until they are glowing red or shooting thousands of rounds through a blaser per year. I could be wrong though. The other flip side to this is that blaser's barrels are made of tremendously strong steel...

Creating my perfect Dangerous Game rifle

Personally I would go with a contemporary look for that rifle. It can be dressed up with classic looking NECG Irons, and even with a restock it will still be a bit of a mutant because the mark V is still just a push feed ATEK rifle. They are well made, and will hit hard. Either way, best of luck...

35 Whelen vs. 35 Whelen AI

I feel like worrying about case life on a .35 whelen is like worrying about the case life of 9mm. .30-06 brass is like sand, you can find it anywhere and just run it through the sizer and wam! You have .35 Whelen. Being that it is even less overbore than .30-06, its case life should be many many...

I would have posted sooner but I had to wade through these darn piles of money I leave laying around, to get to my phone out of my Pagani Zonda... the camo one with the rifle rack in the back... trust me... that took some engineering. Its sad when people go crazy and there is no way to get...

    300 Blackout reloading problem

Too heavily polished internals of a die have exactly the opposite effect. When they are polished, more of the case contacts the inner walls of the die and causes it to stick. I would also check for heavy brass buildup in the die. If it is scratching cases that would be a likely culprit.

Africa Hunting and a Marlin .444!

An interesting observation I have noted is that there is a lot of proposing that a 4xx grain .444, 458 etc. Bullet at 1,600, 1,700 or 1,800 fps is highly effective and penetrates like a tiger tank round. But aren't those EXACT ballistics, with projectiles that are tougher than a hard cast...

    Westley Richards Synthetic??

While I am not a sythentic fan, looking at the lines of that stock... it ain't a ruger american. If a sythetic stocked rifle could be a classic... this would be it. It has all the lines of a beautiful british bolt gun. I would also warrant that it isn't made of tupperware either... however, if...

I cut the threads off my Ruger m77 african .416 and it looked 400% better with that big, ugly thread protector gone. Couldn't use the muzzle brake anymore... which I saw as a huge plus anyway. As I scanned down the rifle I saw a beautiful walnut stock, sleek, graceful blued metal lines... and...

A long time ago, I owned a savage Hog Hunter in .338WM with a 20" barrel. It definitely lost some speed compared to a 24" barrel but wasnt terrible. Africa Hunting and a Marlin .444!

Just found this video.I know this isn't the norm but I wouldn't want to be a guy with a .444 in my hands when this goes down. This buff was hit 8 times, some of them solid good hits with a .416 Remington, a .458 Lott and a .500 NE. A .444 might not be all that effective as the buffalo rounds the...

    Opinions on 30-06

I second the ruger guide gun! I have one in .375 Ruger and it is great! They do need some work and arent the prettiest of rifles. I smoothed the action up on mine and brought the sandblasted finish down to a semi matte with some 600 grit sand paper. But it functions great! The .30-06 is one of...

I have about half the barrel sanded out and most of the pits removed. The rest of them the rust bluing should hide decently. I am only sanding to 320 grit because anything finer and I have had problems getting the acid solution to go on evenly even after it has been thoroughly, obsessively...

Wanted Double Rifle In 470 Or 500 Nitro

"Cheaper" means different things to different people. What I think is expensive, others may consider chrap. That said, in my opinion, a double that costs less than $15K is reasonable and one less than $8K is a hit or miss proposition. Here's a Manton for $14K...
