    on a lighter note...

Actually, peta is right. If everyone was vegan, those 165,000 chickens would not have died in a fire. They would have been euthanized and run through a wood chipper to make fertilizer.

Mixology report, whats your favorite mixed drink?

When I would go to the Alafia River Rendezvous in Florida, I camped around a bunch of folks from Georgia. They would take fresh peaches and cut them into chunks, and then put them in a big tub with Jack Daniel's. Mix. And then fill quart jars of it to make pickled peaches.

Mixology report, whats your favorite mixed drink?

When I was right out of college, every year a group of us would take a goose hunting trip to Southern Illinois. We shot a few geese and a drank A LOT of alcohol. One of the drinks the other guys did was Dr. Pepper and Ciclone. I think there is still a bottle with about an inch in it, in a closet...

    African Safari podcast

The other day I did a couple searches in my current podcast platform for certain people and got some good results. One of the searches was “Ivan Carter.” There are a bunch of podcasts, some going back 4-5 years. He is an incredible listen. I would highly recommend searching out anything with...

    African Safari podcast

I use Podcast Addict to get my supply of listening material. Recently did a search for Ivan Carter and got a bunch of different episodes. I’ve only listened to a couple, but they have been excellent. One was specifically about the 24 Lions project, and I’m currently listening to one from like 5...

    Luxury trains and hunts

I’ve asked one outfitter about adding a few days of specific wingshooting to a PG hunt. This particular one required a travel day to a different location. But I have also looked at non-rail wingshooting trips to SA, since my first hunting passion in birds (and is about 99% of my hunting at...

Yes. You just shoot the middle of a black square. That's how Dr. Robertson described it.

    .30-06 Ammo

I am working on my plains game rifle, for whenever I finally get to take my first Safari. Rifle is a Ruger No. 1 in .30-06, and I have a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 to mount on it. The problem right now seems to be feeding it. I want to try a few different rounds to see what it shoots best, but...

Practice Exercises- How do you prepare?

I was listening to a couple podcasts last week with Dr. Kevin Robertson. In them he specifically talked about some shooting exercises to train for a buffalo hunt. Some of them were geared for game rangers and PHs, but would still be applicable. One I recall was setting 3’x3’ solid black targets...

Who is your favourite gun writer?

I really enjoy Ron Spomer’s work. Not so much for the gun reviews (for the reason repeatedly mentioned). However, his hunting stories are engaging and well written. I particularly like his bird hunting pieces. And he has a great series on how to do a “Safari for less,” which is full of practical...

    African Safari podcast

Thought I’d resurrect this old thread, as hopefully folks know of some more options. So my work has changed due to staffing and I’m on the road in a garbage/recycling truck a lot more. So I spend a significant amount of time listening to either audiobooks or podcasts. I have found a couple...

An old friend of mine (who is about 30 years older than me) tells about carrying his rifle onto the school bus in the morning, storing it in his locker all day, taking it back on the bus in the evening, and then hunting for rabbits and squirrel for supper between the bus stop and home.

Happened one morning at the girlfriends. She was still asleep. I left a note on the toilet, went to a store to buy a plunger, came back and fixed the problem before she woke up. I did admit to it. Come to find out, she had a plunger in the hall closet. And we’re married.

I do a winter camp in NW. Wisconsin in February. We rent port a Johns for the weekend. There is a layer of yellow ice in the urinal by the end, and I think the seats are carpeted by the hair frozen on. (Kidding) A friend tells about somebody he knew many years ago who went up somewhere in...

Dallas Safari Club Convention 2021 canceled

NFR was in a baseball stadium and limited spectator capacity to 15,000. All competitors and workers were wearing masks. And a couple qualifiers didn’t get to compete due to Covid. Just a lot more general space than a convention show. Honestly, a virtual convention is more accessible to me. I...

    Hearing Protection for Hunting

I have used two different types of electronic hearing protection. Both worked, but I have a preference. The first thing I tried was Sportear Ghost Stryke universal fit. They are basically ear buds that used a size 10 hearing aid battery. The unit functions almost like a hearing aid. It takes...
