    Hello from Eastern Canada

What gun do Professional Hunters like to use?

Novel approach... I agree with #5... I'm 6'3" and weighed 240lbs, pre-Covid-19... .577 Nitro Express would be my choice if I could afford one, and was a PH over there...

    Am I being silly?

Right on the money, Mate! Most people don't understand just how critical Headspace is... Too much Headspace, and you'll end up with a ruptured casing, which could cost you an Eye, or worse...

Is the 30-06 adequate for zebra?

I like .444 Marlin for Hunting Deer or larger Game in North America... It'll drop any animal we have, but it will also drop a Deer, without overly damaging the Meat... I rather like Big Bores, but, then again, I'm not a small Lad... One thing I really like about .444, is that it'll stop the...

Is the 30-06 adequate for zebra?

Marksmanship is everything... If you can't consistent take Game with a Single Shot(Stationary... A Moving Target is a different matter), then you should spend more time on the Shooting Range... I love .30-06... Don't get me wrong, it's a favourite for North American Game, for good reason... One...

    .505 Gibbs -- Needs a little work

Some fire damaged guns can be saved, but it's well beyond the scope o' practicality, when it comes to your average Gun Owner... Personally, for the most part, I wouldn't even bother attempting to save a fire damaged Barrel(Unless it was something super rare)... I have saved and repurposed a few...

Shooting the Martini Henry Sportster .450/.577 and Mauser 1871 single shot black powder rifle

As you lads probably already know... I'm a super fan o' the Martini Action... I'll be Custom building Martini DG Rifles, eventually, if all goes as planned... Ironically enough, like the K-31's that were posted, Martini was also Swiss... The Swiss have always made wonderful stuff!

Shooting the Martini Henry Sportster .450/.577 and Mauser 1871 single shot black powder rifle

Those are in the best condition o' any Surplus Swiss Rifles I've ever seen! My 1st Center Fire Rifle was a Sporterized 1889 Schmidt Rubin that had been converted to .30-30WCF by Global Importers in the 1960's... I picked it up at a Gun Show for $95... It was in rough shape(Mechanically sound...

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

From what I gather, from my personal research (I don't own either, and I haven't had a chance to try either, but I know a few people that own either or both... As well as I have read a lot o' reviews)... I would give the edge to Heym... There is a reason that they are very popular among the PH...

Is the 30-06 adequate for zebra?

I reckon it'd do the job, if you're a good enough shot... Personally, the lightest caliber I'd choose to hunt with in Africa, is the .375 H&H... It's rather versatile, especially if you decide to go after heavier game, once you're there... I would much rather be over gunned than under gunned...

Optics Advice From Experienced Elephant Hunters or Professional Hunters

Personally, I would shy away from Optics for close range hunting on animals that have a tendency to charge... I would highly recommend open sights... They allow for much faster target acquisition, which could save your life in an emergency... My 2¢ worth...

    Am I being silly?

For that kind o' money, a custom fitted Rifle should be mandatory... There is nothing better than a Rifle that fits you like a glove! The gun will virtually shoot itself, with sights being virtually unnecessary at close range... Once you've fired a Rifle that has been custom fitted to you like a...

    Learning to Shoot Big Bore

Best advice I can give you about shooting Big Bores, is to shoot off hand, standing... Pull the Rifle as tight into you shoulder as you possibly can, bend your knees slightly, and get up onto the balls o' your feet... Lean as far forward as you can, without losing your balance... This is the...

    Greetings from a Canadian Gunsmith!

Aye, Heym makes some truly beautiful Rifles... I wouldn't mind an 89B in .577 NE, some day... But, they aren't cheap... Although, as far as Double Rifles go, they are very reasonably priced... I've heard nothing but good things about them

    Greetings from a Canadian Gunsmith!

Sorry for the late reply... It is my personal opinion, that a Double in a DG Caliber should have at least 3 points o' Contact in it's locking Mechanism... The Greener is one o' the very best that there is, for this very reason... The Jones Under-Lever is another, especially in conjunction with a...

I have a delema with a new barrel

Sounds like a bad barrel... Better off swapping it for better one... Although, it might be possible to remedy it... Generally the 2 things that affect Accuracy the most, are the Crown & Chamber... Is it possible that it has a defective Crown? This is sheer speculation, as I haven't examined it...

Yikes! That is certainly not safe to shoot! Did you buy it new? Regardless I would get into contact with the Manufacturer immediately... What to use for grouse

My favourite Grouse Rig, is a Pump-Action(Although a SXS Double would be wonderful) .410 with Buckshot (Only allowed during Deer Season, here)... The Reason I like Buckshot for Grouse, is that it gives me a very tight blast pattern(about an Inch and a half at 30 yards). This allows me to shoot...
