    Rifles you will NEVER sell

Never is a pretty long time......:cautious:. However, I would be hard pressed to sell three of my rifles: A Winchester 94 in .30/30, an Interarms Mk X Viscount in .30-06, and a CVA St. Louis Hawken in .54 caliber. The Winchester was a Christmas gift from my parents in 1976 (bicentenial year)...

What can be done with a hide!

I've always wondered if zebra hide would be as good (or better) than horse hide for leather holsters..........holster makers can't get horse hide anymore, and I have a Bianchi horse hide holster for my Colt Trooper Mk III and a Milt Sparks summer special for one of my 1911's. The hide is much...

Terms I am tired of hearing

The one that bugs me the most? "Tactical"......."tactical" this; "tactical" that......what, pray tell, makes it "tactical" (other than a cool marketing ploy)? ......and I really dislike "long range hunting"; I was under the impression that the duty of a hunter was to get as close to the...

Is there an African animal you wouldn't shoot?

Elephant.......unless it was trying to stomp me into the ground. Just think that they are cool animals and I can't bring myself to harm one. Now Zebras, on the other hand...........I got bit by a horse as a child, and somebody's got to pay!!!!:D;)

270 grain Barnes LRX (375 H&H) for Buffalo??

You might want to factor in buffalo charges and such.........the world can turn to shit in an instant! Best to have and not need than to need and not have.;) From what I've read, "normal" buffalo hunting scenarios often have some type of charge involved.

A Solution To The Ivory Trade Conundrum: Buy It And Burn It

Sounds like the idiots who live trap feral cats and then neuter them and then turn them back into the wild.......to spread diseases and prey on the local bird population, get into garbage and rip it up, etc.(n):(o_O Common sense isn't so common any more......................................

    Deer wasting disease

I disagree that game farms are the only culprits......if you look at those "antler growth blocks", they contain animal proteins......"mad cow" disease was spread by feeding ground up beef parts to cattle as a source of (cheap) protein. Both mad cow and CWD are spongiform enchephalopathys; they...

    Taxidermy recommendations for South Africa

Bring it home......lot's of "smoke and mirrors" with SA taxidermy; and as previously stated, you can complain, but you won't be able to (cheaply) send it back to make it right. If I ever get to go back, I won't make the same mistake twice.

    on a lighter note...

I would guess that if I were driving a visually impaired person through a drive through, I could READ them the menu, and a braille menu would not be needed.......unless, of course, the driver couldn't read.....and in that case the braille sign would be moot as well.
  14. M

    on a lighter note...

Never noticed that on the ATM machine (probably because I don't use them), but I did notice a sign at the local Wendy's drive through.......said "Braille menu available upon request". I always wondered who the hell that sign (in a drive through) was for!!!!

    Opinions on 8mm Mag

I was considering an 8mm Rem. mag; was enamored with the gun/cartridge when it was first introduced back in the 1980's; fast forward about 40 years......thought about getting something "bigger" than my .30-06 and again started thinking 8mm magnum. Did some research.......not much available in...

Did Cabela’s stop selling African hunting merchandise?

It might be a local thing.......the one by my house does not; there was a blurb in the paper about it a few years back, saying how they didn't want to attract an "undesirable element" or some such nonsense. Or maybe they've changed their policy and decided that hunters/gun owners $$$ are just...

Did Cabela’s stop selling African hunting merchandise?

I'm sure that those folks running around in the tan vests at Cabela's aren't there "for fun".......they are trying to make a living as well as those who own small business.........I guess I have to draw the line at "what does the store/company do for me as an outdoorsman?" Do they decide to...

    Question about crimping

I crimp for lever guns, for obvious reasons......the recoil can push bullets deeper in the case, causing jams, inaccuracy etc. I also crimp any heavy recoiling handgun round......nothing worse that trying to cock the hammer on a DA .44 magnum and not having the cylinder turn.....because the...

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Mount Carmel Safaris?

Outfitter inquiry..... Does anyone have any experience with an outfitter called "Mount Carmel Safaris" owned and operated by an Andries Van Zyl in the Northern Cape? Please shoot me a PM if you don't wish to openly post here.......asking for a friend who has a chance to hunt with them. Thanks.

Two hunters sharing one rifle case?

Just wondering if it was allowed, either entering SA or entering back in the States. Each hunter has 1 rifle, but it is a double rifle case. Or would the owner of each rifle have to have their own seperate case? Forgive me if it seems like a stupid question, but with all the changes going on...

Fill a freezer... what do you load it with?

    Bullets

Not so much talk of bullets when I was younger (born in '61), but more so of cartridges.......remember my grandfather and uncles talking (over Pabst Blue ribbon beer) about how some cartridges, such as the .30-06, where "too powerful" for deer (whitetails). Deer cartridges needed heavy, slow...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think I am done with trophy mounts. I'm sorta kinda in the same boat......wife doesn't want them in certain areas of the house (and I'm fine with that; it's our home, not the Smithsonian). My mounts are in my (small) home office and the basement......so...

    30-06 220 Grain Bullets

I used a .30-06 for my only hunt in Africa; I used a 200 grain Nosler partition.....the reason being that bullet/load (H414) shot a 1/4 " group at 100 yards consistently over 30 years of playing with it. Farthest shot was a Kudu bull at 300 yards.......one shot kill. I wouldn't hesitate to use...
