Thank you for the PH references. I’ll narrow down my list this week of where I want to hunt most . Then move towards a budget for that area. My heart leads me to a traditional tracking buffalo hunt, I’m narrowing the field a bit. I hope to have a budget in place by next month. My 458 Lott goes...

    Starting from scratch

A giant thank you to all you gentlemen, for your gracious advice , and opinions. I truly am gratified by your willingness to help. My heart is looking for a traditional free range buffalo hunt. My quandary is simply if want to track across the open tangles, or chase swamp herds in open areas...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

I would look at 416, if I could only have one. I think 416 Remington mag has many good qualities. No I don’t own it, but my 458 Lott is limited in it range . A 416 could give you both range and punch.

    Starting from scratch

Love that big bossed bull, beautiful by any standard. Yes I’m looking for free range hunt, and a good bull for a first buffalo. My thought is go all out for my first buffalo hunt. Then concentrate on other species on my next hunt, with buffalo as a second tag, my buffalo madness has been brewing...

    Starting from scratch

Thank you for a good reference. I’m studying the best areas . Reading books to get a good idea of what’s possible. I want my first buffalo to be my best, if my investments blossom I’ll be looking at elephant as my second DG, but leopard is on my list too. My heart has been in Africa a long time...

Can Someone Help Me Judge The Size Of This Croc

I was guessing about 10 to 12, based solely on tail in relation to body. Really big crocs have bigger bodies , so I could be off by a little

    Starting from scratch

My plan to hunt buffalo is coming to fruition . I want to ask the hunters here, who have made multiple safaris . My first question is my search for a PH. I want to find a PH that I can trust, and who I can hunt future game on my wish list. Would it be best to attend the SCI, Dallas convention ...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I am curious how anyone feels the 458 Lott has less felt recoil than the 458 WM? Science shows the Lott to have more ft lbs of recoil. Is it possible to tame recoil enough in a Lott, to be a felt 458 WM? With all the loading advice , I concur in my shooting life, heavier bullets , give more...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I want to add , I found a B&C stock for the CZ 550 action on their website. It has aluminum frame imbedded as I mentioned in the Savage stock before. It comes in various colors and is exactly what I want for the 550 I have. I’ll keep everyone posted on felt recoil. I may just get a buddy to help...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I have to admit this is a lively conversation. I would still add a piece to the puzzle . That 300 Weatherby I bought was a bargain deal years ago and is a vanguard. I thought the recoil would be horrible because the thing is light for caliber. It shoots at an 06 level of recoil, as I said...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I will not argue the premise of composite stock being lighter , and my beliefs they transmit “more” recoil than wood. But, my 300 Weatherby mag shots under 1MOA, with a composite stock, and by my opinion shoots softer than a 06. Only a high grade composite stock should be applied to DG rifles...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I have a CZ 550 in 458 Lott, and it has a nasty punch to it. I have a 375 Win 70, that shoots like a dream. I was considering buying a Rigby 416, but the hope of a “ push” recoil impulse maybe absent in the Rigby similar to the Lott. Your comparison in stock materials is interesting, I wonder if...

    The shoulder carry

I have to add a comment from personal experience. I was bird hunting with my brother in law, and was following him from the car with guns and dog in tow. I always tAlked safety and had reiterated that guns stay unloaded until in the field. As I followed him up a small rise he slipped , having...

Is the .375 H&H strong enough

I enjoy this topic immensely, and appreciate you insights. I love the topics of big bores, and stopping powers. As a trident reloader, self taught ballistician, I enjoy the science, especially put into action. I have used a 375 H&H enough to appreciate it's potential, 300gr Barnes have...

Is the .375 H&H strong enough

I suggest reading Pondoro Taylor's writing, he was a trident admirer of the 375 H&H, my experience has been similar. I would suggest the 375 is the best "all around African caliber", but for stopping power with DG, I would yield the 400+ calibers are better suited. I would love to hear from...

REPORT: Trophaendienste Taxidermy Namibia - Beware

I agree there are good artists in SA. My thought was a broker of sorts handling trophy skins and horns for transfer back to home country. DSC Supports EPA Action To Rescind Pebble Veto Due To New Mine Plan

Wrong, clean resource extraction and clean water can coexist. Eliminate water runoff, and waste pools, this can prevent downstream contamination. Regular water sampling down stream can catch heavy metal seepage early. EPA regulation applied fairly, as it was intended works to protect the...

REPORT: Trophaendienste Taxidermy Namibia - Beware

I hope you all have good luck with your trophies. Taxidermist friend of mine has hunted all over the world. He says getting skins out of Africa is “terrible”, and everyone has trouble. I would think some outfitter in SA would see this as a $$$ opportunity, and form a company to expedite skins to...

Is South Africa Going The Way Of Zimbabwe?

Steve, Thank you for the article, I am an admirer of you work on TV, and your conservation editorials. Is the .375 H&H strong enough

I encourage all those that are interested to read John Pondoro Taylor's African rifles and Cartridges . He hunted extensively with the 375, and was an Ivory poacher by his own words. One bit of wisdom Pondoro gave, was the "shock" factor on big elephants, when using big bore guns. You must shoot...

    The shoulder carry

There was a PH a few years back that was shot thru the shoulder/arm and bled to death in the field. Story goes that the hunter was unmoved. The offending hunter got on the plane , and never looked back. All the zealots of "African carry" would feel different if the lead PH was carrying his rifle...

    The shoulder carry

I have had to stifle myself reading this entire post before commenting, and I will ruffle feathers but here goes I have hunted deer for 38 years, using shotguns, rifles, and bows. Which Rifle Scope to Use with Big Bore Calibers?

I am surprised Nightforce has not been brought up till now. The 50 BMG crowd I know say good things about them, and that is a bunch of recoil for a scope. I do believe they may offer a DG piece as well, not sure though. The Aimpoint 30L I saw used on Buffalo was given praises by the PH for its...

The Importance Of Lion Hunting In Zimbabwe

When the "wisdom" of the USFW learns that WE hunters in the US are the ones that support worldwide conservation, then a great big lift will come on, but we risk seeing horrible declines in , lion, polar bear, and elephant before that light comes on.

IMPORTANT: Immediate Changes to South African Firearm Registration Guidelines for American Hunters

If I am hunting RSA, and my first and final destination is Johannesburg, can my PH or outfitter meet me there, and prevent me from being fleeced? I mean he should be concerned about this more than I am. Also, are other African countries better, or worse at this "bribe game" ?

    Wounded Cape Buffalo Charge

This is not the first video I have seen of the client shooting from behind the PH. I would not follow any game in the bush without a solid plan. Looking at another 458 Lott

I would say the problem is hit or miss rifle to rifle. I do not see a problem in the action of the rifle I have, but it could be smoothed professionally, and improved. I can work the rifle rapidly without dysfunction at present. I will keep all informed as I run this thru the paces this spring.

Good to know, thank you. I will talk it over with the gunsmith that is doing some other work. As of right now, I am most interested in putting this particular rig thru it's paces. I believe in adapting to a rifle first, vs adapting the rifle to me. Sounds a bit odd to some, but I must find a...

Well I will be glad to send a picture of my CZ, when I get finished with some customization. I will give an honest up or down, on whether it is reliable, or not. Looking at another 458 Lott

Yes, well if CZ bashing is over I would like to say that there is a very different gun in $2500 and $10000. Without saying, if i drop 10K, I better get a flawless action. I would only drop 10K or more on a double, and let me remind the elitist attitude, that the double action will weaken over...

    Looking at another 458 Lott

My 02 cents, as I own a CZ, and a few other controlled round feeders. The Mauser action I feel needs polished after manufacturing , and most old Mausers with silk like actions have been worn in to be that way. I cannot comment on the new Mausers, and I would believe they are polished after...

    CZ 458 Lott

I am not sure what "hog back" your talking about. I assume that you mean a Weatherby style stock. I have a CZ 458 Lott, and I don"t see a Weatherby stock (I own one) being the answer for recoil. Mercury recoil reducers, increased weight, quality recoil pad, and lastly porting if needed. My CZ...
