SOUTH AFRICA: My Successful 7 Day Hunt With Pawprint Safaris In The Northwest & Limpopo Provinces

Great hunt report and great animals. I'm thinking of adding an old dry cow buffalo to my "wanted" list.

    Gear you couldn’t hunt without

Water, compass, I-phone, lighter, small bag with rich pine tinder slivers, headlamp, small high-quality flashlight, wet wipes, 4" fixed blade knife, 10 spare rounds of ammo, drag rope, dry socks, binos, jerky, dried fruit. This is what I take for a half/full day hunting plus layered clothes and...

    American hunter black giraffe hunt

Mr. Poindexter you are spot on. Teenage girls and attractive ladies can be guaranteed to receive immediate negative attention- especially if they shoot a PCC (pretty, cute, cuddly) animal. Big whitetails, lions, and elephants also seem to trigger the uninformed masses negative emotional...

I got to take my dad and kids fishing...

Yes sir, he did. Dad has never been much of a hunter. Small game only as he likes steady action and has never been into waiting for anything to happen for long. However, he always has loved the outdoors and I have eaten more fish caught from creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico...

Former Rep. Heck, Who Lobbied for PETA, Kills Zebra on Safari

I personally wouldn't represent PETA on any matter. He did sign on to lobby for them on a very specific piece of legislation that is pretty far removed from hunting.

SOUTH AFRICA: Outstanding Hunt With Chris Troskie Safaris Africa & Henry Arms

Thanks for the report! Congrats and I'm glad y'all all had such a great time. I'm a lever gun fan, too. Ragman, blue wildebeest is one of my favorite antelope to hunt, makes a great trophy, and is wonderful on the table. I recommend you hunt one if you can.

I got to take my dad and kids fishing...

Thanks guys. Really special to me as I can see the old man really is old now and, though he did well, we had to help him in and out of the boat and he had to fish sitting on a cooler. He never asked for help fighting a fish though! I do believe there is a chance that this was our last trip...

I got to take my dad and kids fishing...

I grew up with deep sea fishing trips with my dad as an annual summer tradition. That continued after I got married and for a good 10 or 15 years my wife and I would plan a summer vacation usually to Orange Beach, Al with my parents. More often than not, we did a blue water, overnight tuna trip...

    Used older scopes

Leupold Vari-X III 1" tube scopes in 1.5-5 and 2-7 show up occasionally at my local shop. I've bought 3 or 4 so far and in the price range you mentioned, sent them back to Leupold for any needed tinkering, and mounted them up- usually on a #1 or classic Marlin lever action. They have been...

    Trophy / Taxidermy question

Flat skins are really inexpensive and nice to have thrown over the back of a couch or easy chair. I love the skulls that we had done and the zebra is my favorite. However, good photography adds as much or more to the trophy room than the actual animal parts. Be sure to get pics with no people in...

    My new Ruger No1 7x57

Two 7x57s, a .280, a 30-06 (that has been to Africa), and a .450 Rigby #1 all live at my place. All but the .450 have taken game and it will (hopefully) be used on my first Buffalo. I'd recommend that you keep it.

    Cape vs. Flatskin

When I was in SA last year my outfitter had a BW flatskin tanned and used it for a rug on the concrete floor of his office. I forget exactly how old he said it was but more than 10 years he had been walking on it and it still looked pretty good. He said the BW skins stayed pretty much longer...

A lot of it will be visible- and even more pretty woodwork that I have planned that hasn't even hit the mill yet. Second floor will be all quarter-sawn mixed wide-plank hardwood secured with 18th century cut nails, etc. This may end up being a really long thread...And I really appreciate the...

.450 Rigby light bullet loads, where to start?

8x68 that's exactly the kind of load I'm looking for. Thank you- rifle should be done in May. It's a #1 so plenty of strength there but I'll probably start at 90-92 and work up from there. I'd love to get the velocity you did but would be happy if I was getting good accuracy at anything over 2850.

My Trophy Room - Not much to look at... yet

Here are some pics of the progress so far. The coldest, wettest, and snowiest Ga winter I can remember has made building pretty slow. I've also learned a lot more about timber frame joinery resulting in slower but much prettier work. The last two weekends have been spent milling more oak...

Though I have hunted a lot in the States considering my age I always feel a bit of extra pressure to hunt and shoot well when on any type of guided hunt. Taking your own rifle: Is it worth the hassle?

If you fly Delta 200 ATL to OR Tambo as we did I think the biggest hassle may be the Delta ticket agents who never seem to handle the check-in procedure the same way twice or know their own regulations. We used a service, had pre-approved permits, and only took a couple minutes with SAPS. I...

Rechamber #1 to .450 Nitro Express?

Tarbe, I only have 24 years experience with No. 1s and like you have found that the cartridge does not need to be "threaded" into the chamber. I have also found when using pointed bullets and cartridges with large bases you can almost "throw" them in the direction of the chamber and they will...

Rechamber #1 to .450 Nitro Express?

Pretty simple- The lower muzzle velocity keeps pressures really low which insures ease of extraction and long case life. Couple that with the fact that to load a single shot rifle smoothly bottle-neck cartridges are a real benefit- it is much easier to start a .458" bullet into a .589" chamber...
