I read recently that the poisoning toll is around 300 ele., and many other animals. A Chinese national was arrested in Harare recently with several kilos of raw and carved ivory. I have to look for the article again. When I find it I will post the link but I'm sure it can be Googled.
 
This is just wrong. It is killing just for profit. not to mention the other animals that die from eating the carcass's of the poisoned animals. I can understand a native tribesman poaching an animal to feed his village . But I have no sympathy toward those who's sole purpose is financial gain. As hunters we serve a purpose, we thin the heard and make room for stronger growth. We do this buy regulation of the number of animals we are allowed to harvest. The animals we take are never gone to waste. Nothing upset's me more than to find a deer carcass with the horns removed and the rest left to rot. The only answer is to make the punishment so severe the profit is no longer appealing .
 
As much as I would also prefer a harsher penalty, one must know that 15 years in a Zim Jail is no party.
 
on the other side of the coin i believe a zimbabwe nat parks game scout is to be hanged for shooting a suspected poacher. i believe they were carrying out a raid on a village after getting info on poaching, and during the raid one of the suspects came out of his hut/house armed and the scout shot him. maybe one of the zim boys can confirm/give the correct details as i only heard about it up in zambia while i was there just now, and things can get confused coming down the line of communication.
 
During my travels I have visited a lot of third world countries. Usually during times of civil unrest . I was always glad to return home to the USA. Laws in some countries seem to conform to the mood of the day.
