I have a never shot nor heard the likes of the .416 Rigby! I recently purchased a Ruger No.1 in this caliber and SUNDAY.. is GUNDAY! Fellas, what can I expect? Can anyone describe what it sounds like? I can imagine this thing is going to get everyone's attention,..ESPECIALLY ME!!

If it fits properly and you do not shoot from a sitting bench you will find it a stout , but not a punishing caliber. When you shoot your first buff it will feel like a .22 (kinda).

cheers,Lon

Like any big bore if one shoots it from a bench it can punish you , depending on your tolerance for recoil . If you have a scope on it be cautious about the recoil and the distance between your eye and the scope , if not you may end up being a member of the "half moon club ".
I find my CZ 550 - 416 Rigby's recoil tolerable , my Sako .375 H&H has a worse recoil if compared to the CZ but then design and the weight of the rifle will also play a role .
Regarding the the sound , it has a decent "boom" . Let us know how Sundays shoot goes and how you experience the 416 Rigby .

Per Chuck Hawks’ recoil table.
- The .375 H&H Magnum produces more than 35 ft.-lbs. of felt recoil with a nine-pound rifle.
- The .416 Rigby wallops shooters with 58 ft-lbs. of recoil with a 10-pound rifle.

Ron Spomer has a couple of videos demonstrating 416 Rigby. You might want to check it out.

Regards,

Fellas, what can I expect?
Dislodged shoulder, broken retina and collar bone.
Thats a joke.
Go easy.
Shoot standing from stick.
Minimize shooting from bench, just few initial zeroing shots.

After the shot, watch for the expression from the person next to you who is shooting the 5.56; that will tell you everything about the sound. :)

My 416 Rigby is magnaported and is quite impressive when shooting at dusk.

I wouldn't worry too much about the noise. As you won't be able to feel your face after the first round, much less have any hearing left thereafter.
The second round will produce a small trickle of blood from your right eye (if you're right handed). This is from the concussion. But not to worry, you won't have any short term memory left, so you'll never know what caused it.
The third round will cause anal seepage. Much like many prescriptions, sometimes the cure is worse than the sickness itself.
The fourth and final round will cause what's known as a basilar skull fracture. This can be very painful and will blacken both eyes, but until you step up to a 500 Jeffery or larger, it's usually not fatal.
If you dare shoot four more rounds after the initial outing, give us a shout back, and I'll let you know what to expect after you come home from rehab.

Good luck!

Its funny, you must admit it!

Shoot a 458 Lott first…then the Rigby. You’ll hardly notice the Rigby’s recoil and muzzle bast!

I remember old timers telling me how bad a 30-06 kicked when I was a kid. I thought so too until I shot a 416.

God, this thread reminds me of when I used to have a Rigby in 470 NE. When I’d practice, I’d take 2 Excedrin before a shooting session and sometimes another after I finished. I don’t think I ever fired more than 6 or 7 shots in a practice session.

Don’t worry about the recoil of the 416. It’s a pretty shootable caliber as far as big bores are concerned. Especially if you keep your loads around 2,300-2,400 fps. I thought the recoil of my 416 was severe with loads I used to shoot at 2,510 fps, but now I shoot loads that are 2,350 and it’s much more pleasant. And that milder load kills Buffalo just as dead.

A hunting outfitter sent in a bolt rifle to the club to see what was wrong with it, the learner PH they had missed everything he shot at. We hit everything. Turns out the guy was terrified of the thing - 416 Rigby. Easy solution, 375H&H, and he shot just fine.
