Advice for a Safari hunt with those who do not hunt

I am trying to map out my first trip to Africa but it is a balancing act. My wife does not hunt. As a result, any trip for me to hunt in Africa will probably have to also involve time at a resort or be done from a location that has the standard vacation type amenities. I am wondering how realistic this divided time is on a reasonable budget? Also, does anyone have any advice on suitable resorts or other standard vacation spots that would allow for me to hunt? One idea I have is that I have access to a resort property in Kenya - I am wondering if a solution would be to spend a week there but then travel within Africa to a place for the hunting?

I am open to any ideas or advice anyone may have.

If you know you have access to a resort in Kenya, then it sounds like half the problem is solved. Depending on your budget, having Tanzania right next door is handy, as that is some of the best of what Africa has to offer. I assume you know that Kenya is closed to hunting.:cool:
 
I had the same issues on my first trip.
Deal with a load of non-hunters while procuring good hunting.

There are many excellent lodges on RSA and Namibia that will provide plenty of amenities for your wife and allow you to hunt.

While I was at Ozondjahe Safaris I visited with two American couples that were in the same boat you are. Wife did not hunt, husband did.
The ladies enjoyed themselves there and then one couple went on to drive to the coast to stay by the Ocean and do the resort thing and visit Etosha.

Divided time is workable.

Many outfits offer side trips and tours, game viewing (although game viewing with hunters tends to be better from what I have experienced)
RSA and Namibia outfits have plenty to offer.

Like Ses said, if you already have access head there for the resort portion and then fly onward to hunt.
If that is to costly, you will have to choose an outfit that has a resort feel to it.

Thanks, one of my concerns about Kenya is that it is yet another country to cart my guns through.

I looked at the Tanzania country description on AH, it certainly sounds great. I am predisposed to countries that have stable political climates for obvious reasons. Is there one country that could be considered a better fit from the family vacation perspective?
 
You probably would not want to cart your guns around, into or thru Kenya. No point in it. A likely best place all things considered would be either RSA or Namibia as it is much more convenient when traveling with guns. Plenty of touristy things in both places.
 
We did both. Hunt and sightsee in RSA. Cape Town/Table mountain/Cape of good hope/Big 5 PhotoSafari/Wine tasting/Port Elizabeth/etc. We had a great time and came back with some super nice(SCI record book) animals and over 1600 photos. Contact me if you would like to know what/how we did it.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will find some great information for your trip. if you need some help planning, please Don't hesitate to contact me.

Travel through Kenya with firearms, should be crossed off your list #1, it's hard to even transit through with a firearm.
if you are planning on visiting the resort there, it would be more practical to borrow or rent guns for the duration of your hunt. this will also make all your travel easier and your options for getting to Africa easier. There are many great lodges available where you and your wife would be very comfortable and both enjoy the trip. South Africa and Namibia would be two great choices for doing a bit of hunting and staying within a budget. drop me an email and I'll be more than happy to help with your trip.

If my wife decided to join me on one of my hunts, this would be the plan.
 
Peroze -I just got back form RSA with my wife a couple of weeks ago for our first trip to Africa. It was actually our honeymoon. I did all my hunting with a camera this time but I already started to plan a trip back and bring a bow or rifle. When I told my wife I wanted to go back next year to hunt she had no hesitation in agreeing we should save our money and get back to Africa ASAP! I cant vouch for any hunting lodges yet, but there are a couple of game viewing lodges I can stand behind 100% near the Limpopo area which is also great hunting area. We did some spa stuff and other sight seeing as well but at the end of the day we both agreed that next time we would use all our time for the bush.

I was actually a little disappointed when we first planned on going to Africa and I knew I wasnt going to be able to hunt. But as soon as we went out on our first safari drive that all dissipated. I learned a lot from the trackers and guides that I can use next time when I hunt.

I've been to E Africa a lot, and southern Africa on a few occasions.
You could certainly hunt in Tanzania and take your wife to Ngorogoro. That's a beautiful area and you would both have a terrific time. I would think that what you want to do can also be done in S Africa and Namibia. And surely your wife could see Okavango while you hunt in the Botswanna/Zambia region. The bottom line is that you've got some good choices.
