Gents,
New here and a great forum.
Two quick questions:

How is it going solo on a safari?
My wife has no interest and none of my friends are hunters. Does it become a "3rd wheel" situation at night in camp? I don't mind being tossed in with others for a meal and such, and get along well with others- and just realizing how reasonably priced a Plains Safari can be I'd really like to do it. But I'm curious if anyone does it solo or if it is odd to do?
I would like to just jet off to JoBurg and do a quick 5day plains hunt. Direct from JFK it's not a travel nightmare so that seems easy enough.

Quagga? I did a search on the forum and they do not come up on my phone searches. Is there a reason they don't show here?

Thanks in advance for any help. Seems a great forum.

hi welcome to AH. dont worry plenty of people go and do a hunt by themselves. the quagga question is a bit off the wall as they have been extinct in the wild since the late 1870`s, and the last one ever died in a zoo in 1883......whats the reason for your interest in them?

I usually go on my own. No ne else to muck you around. I've been with Matola, Thorndale and last with Bos en Dal. This last one is handy as Gerrit will pick you up at joburg. You can be hunting the day you arrive. I had a great time.
Pm me if you want more, but I would say get going.

Research a good operator and you'll be set.

I just hunted at Ozondjahe Safaris
on my own. I was "thrown in" with other hunters/ groups and had a great time. A good host ensures you are not left out.

Good luck planning your hunt.

I am going solo this summer, My son and daughter in law will meet me there but not for the whole safari, just a couple of days while they tour around. from the PHs I talked to, most (if not all) will only book a camp for your party, if you prefer to be alone, just state so.
I learned long ago that solo is the way, no one to back out at the last minute no competition for largest/farthest shot/ etc... Just you and the PH pursuing animals and enjoying another part of the world.

I hunt solo and enjoy it. Sure it can be fun to hunt with friends and family but if they are not interested go solo. I find it peaceful to set your own schedule, you are not tied down or restricted by others.

Brickburn's post is excellent advice!

Don't worry about the solo thing. It's a good time. I just came back from my third solo trip over there. Had a great time and this trip I was the only hunter in camp and was treated like a king. The first time I went everyone I talked to about going said they were interested until it came time to put up the money. So, I figured I was never going to go to the "Super Bowl" of hunting waiting for anybody and off I went. The next couple times I didn't even want anybody with me. You usually meet some interesting people on the way. I always have. Go, you won't regret it. After all it is "Africa"

I went solo on my first trip as well, also had another solo in camp. So do it, you will have fun.

Welcome to AH.

I travel with a group, but then hunt solo, no distractions, just the PH and myself.

Guys,
Thank you so much for the comments and PMs. Really encouraging to hear from others in my same situation. Making my dream a reality. Lots of info here and very helpful posts.
Keep it coming, I'm all ears.

I am also Going Solo next year,,,I,m around people 50 hours a week 51 weeks a year,,the 52nd week is all mine

You will enjoy solo, your PH and the campstaff will be with you,and you will enjoy every evenings campfire talk.

Welcome to the site

i don't think traveling alone is such a bad thing, many clients come on their own, you can enjoy the undivided attention of your hosts and ph.

Plan that trip and do it on your own or with a friend or spouse it does not matter.

Best Regards

Good day sir,
I totally agree with what the members here have said regarding traveling solo. It absolutely makes no difference, whether you arrive in camp alone or not. You will still hunt alone with your own PH during the day, but will have the pleasure of mingling with the other hunters during the evening, sharing stories, the day's events and creating friendships in camp that will last a lifetime.
All the best with your planning. The members here take great pride in helping each other out, should one of us need advice on planning a trip.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

Marius summed it up pretty well. I also usually do my hunts solo. It seems that the friends who have enough money to afford to go don't hunt and the friends who hunt don't have enough money. For the most part, hunters are a sociable bunch. You start off with something in common - a love of the hunt. You'll have a great time.

I went this year. My brother was hot to go then bailed on me. My daughter then wanted to go and we went. Had a great time. She is a hunter also. It was her and I, the PH and the tracker. Was great and got great animals.
If she did not go I was going to go solo. Really you are not solo as you have the PH and others that make you feel like you are with friends anyway.
If you like spot and stalk hunting from daylight to dark with lots of excellent animals look up Iliwa Safaris. Great packages and prices. Fantastic service and people. Feel free to contact me for more info. I am not getting anything out of it just like to see others get a great Safari with paying too high of prices.
