I like to hunt pheasants. Not many close by where I live. Grew up in Idaho and as a boy I'd get 10 or 12 each fall. Usually when I was walking the canals jump shooting ducks... The last few years I've hunted N. Dakota. Lots of birds and some decent state land to hunt on where you don't have to pay. There are also some landowners that will let you on when you ask. Lots of fun especially if you have a good bird dog. Towards the end of the season when it snows the birds will flock up. Acouple of years ago I hit it that way. The birds are wild from the hunting pressur so you have to out think them... We'll push them to one another. One morning just after first light we pulled up to a field/ CRP area of state land and saw close to 1000 birds fly out... Incredible numbers. We still found enough to get our limits. Good to eat as well. Good memories.

Martin, pheasant hunting is incredible... I have done a tremendous amount of pheasant hunting in France earlier in life, with dogs as well as driven hunts. I have had the chance to hunt them with my own dogs, two Vizsla (Hungarian Braque) which is very rewarding. Driven pheasant hunts can be action packed and very challenging... Certainly if you enjoy bird hunting in Europe you need to experience Sandgrouse hunting in Namibia, it's an amazing rush for those who are passionate about bird hunting.
I am not familiar with Slovakia but know many hunters in France who go to Hungary particularly to hunt pheasant and I imagine that it might be similar to your country.
As gillettehunter said, it's a great bird to eat as well!

Me and my father we organize pheasant hunting in Slovakia, in our own concession. We use to hunt anually some 5 000-10 000 pheasants and we sell some 40 000.
Yeah you are right Jerome, Viszla is perfect hunting dog, I prefer Labradors but Hungarian hunting dog is very used dog over here....we are some 40 km from hungarian border so a lot of hunters use to hunt with viszlas.

I love pheasant hunting as well. As you can tell I live in North Dakota, which is probably the 2nd best place to hunt pheasants in the U.S. right behind South Dakota. I trained a weimaraner from a puppy and he is now 3 years old. He is one of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure to hunt over. Below is a pic of my dog Dash and another from a recent successful hunt with my son as well. (First time I tried posting pics, so I hope it works.)

SlovakianHunter, That's a very nice black Lab you have there. Is your Pheasant hunting on your concession private or do you operate as a hunting outfit? Do you have a website for your operation? 800 Pheasants in one day is incredible, how many guns?

We organize the hunts commercialy and also on private basis.
We dont have website and materials yet, but I am working on that so I hope I can publish it here soon.
There were some 15 guns on that hunt. Of course commercially you can shoot easily 1000 - 1300 pheasants in one day.

Martin, If I may ask what do you charge per day / per bird for a Pheasant shoot? Do you use "secretarios"? Let me know when your website is up...

There are more offers, I dont have all the material here at the PC so I can check it for you and I will post it. But for example when you pay for pheasants that you shoot in one day there it is around 15/16 EUR per pheasant. So if you shoot 1000 pheasants you pay 15 000 EUR, etc.

Sorry I don't know the name in English, secretarios (Spanish) are the guys who load the guns for you during a driven hunt when you're using a pair of or two shotguns. Do your pheasant fly well? Thanks for the info.

Ah yes, of course if the hunter want a "secretario" then he get him and yeah, the pheasants fly high when there is a good weather, because some rounds are made like hunters stay some 30 meters in front of a line of high coniferous trees, so when they fly from the forest they fly quite high and they are fast in very good condition.

800 pheasants in one day is astounding! I would love to see some videos as Jerome mentioned.
Jerome, as far as my son, he just turned 9 (he is pretty big for his age). He has been shooting a bow since he was 4, started on a BB gun two years ago, stepped up to a pellet gun and .22 this last summer. Next spring I hope to step him up to a shotgun. I have a box of clay targets in the basement with his name on it already.

nd, always nice when farther and son can do things like this together. I have lots of fond memories of going shooting with my father. Sounds like he's ready to graduate to the "big gun"...

Reviving an older thread...
Wife asked me today what I thought about a driven Pheasants (or other game birds) hunt in the UK. Wondering if anyone here has any experience traveling to the UK with a shotgun or have a recommendation on an outfit. It would be combined with some kind of sightseeing or tourist destination.
Lastly would tweed breeks, vest and a tie be absolutely necessary?

Disregard on the breeks and tweed question. It appears they are HIGHLY SUGGESTED. Which is fine.

I’ve done it many times. You simply get a permit ahead of time through the police. H&H has always done this for me but any reputable agent can handle it.
To your second question, you will feel (and be) very out of place if you don’t dress the part. Tweed breeks and cap with a tattersall shirt, tie and oilskin will be fine. A vest is not really needed. I would just buy kit when you get there. I shop at Park Street Guns in St Albans. They have everything you will need. If it is going to be cold consider a shooting coat instead of the oilskin. I use mine as a dress overcoat on this side of the pond. They are very distinctive.
