Im not sure how much I'll be able to (or want to) post while we're in camp.. but I thought I would go on and start a hunt report thread as a placeholder and update it as time and bandwidth permit.. We're headed to the airport in a few hours and are on the way to our 2021 South Africa hunt with @Bos en Dal SAFARIS

In mid 2019, a group of buddies and I that do a "veterans" hog hunt in Texas every year started talking about possibly doing a group hunt in Africa. By the end of 2019 we had everything worked out.. 4 of us were locked in, planned on taking our spouses with us, and had dates set for July 2020..

Then that heifer 'rona showed up and dashed all of our plans..

Fast forward to about Feb of 2021.. Things start opening up and international travel and hunting begin to look a little more positive.. Quickly we start to re-group and develop a plan.. The problem was that over the course of about 14-15 months a couple of the guys that committed prior were now "out" and the search was on to see if there were any replacements that wanted to hunt.. The two of us that were still "in" settled on some dates (mid July 2021), and began talking with other veterans that are among our hunting buddy friends.. In short order we had camp filled to capacity again and our "veterans hunt" was back on..

My better half and I are headed to the airport in a few hours.. the rest of our hunting party starts their journey on Saturday morning.. I'm planning on chasing bushpig, steinbok, and I might be convinced to take a kudu if a nice one walks out that I just cant resist.. or, to be honest... what I bag might be completely different.. I dont really have firm or nonnegotiable plans.. I just want to get the hell out of the US for a little while and enjoy the red dirt and the evening fire in South Africa for a bit.. Im perfectly happy to spend this entire trip just hunting whatever the bush provides..

The better half has more specific targets/goals in mind.. she is hard set on bushbuck, eland, and a croc.. and Im sure will pick another something or two before we head home if the right animal presents itself at the right time, etc...

The other three hunters (plus 1 observer) are doing fairly basic/entry plains game hunts.. All are avid, and very experienced north american hunters.. but this will be their first international hunt.. one hunter is after impala, blue wildebeest, warthog, and kudu.. another is after blesbok, red hartebeest, warthog, and gemsbok, and the third is looking at blesbok, impala, and maybe something else once they have a chance to look around and see how things work..

Im on the Qatar Airlines flight from DFW to Doha to Jo'berg. The rest of the party are doing the United route from Newark to Jo'berg. I'll provide feedback/notes on how each flight went once we return.. I will say that Ive flown Qatar numerous times in the past (not to South Africa however) and have always been very happy with them.. They have been a bit of a PIA this time around however with having to deal with them on traveling with firearms.. Im 99% certain everything is sorted out at this point (I know, I know.. should have used a travel agent instead of booking the flights myself...).. but we're planning on getting to the airport extremely early this afternoon just in case..

Im taking my Winchester 70 Classic Stainless in 375H&H on this trip and shooting barnes 300gr TSX hand loads (a few solids are available as well in case we see that steinbok mentioned above).. My wife is taking her trusty VZ24 (98 Mauser) custom that I built her about 4 years ago in .35 Whelen (@Bob Nelson 35Whelen should be proud! :) ) and is shooting barnes 225gr TTSX hand loads.. The rest of the hunters are using camp rifles..

More to follow as the hunt progresses..

Safe travels and best of luck! Look forward to the full report in the coming weeks!

Best of luck stay, safe, enjoy your adventure

Sweet, another report to read. :) Safe travels and shoot straight. (y) (y)

Enjoy your flight I hope all goes well for your respective hunts and am looking forward to reading your hunt reports.
You have a great rifle in the 375.
I applaud your wifes choice and I'm sure she will acquit herself well.
The Whelen is a very underrated round but you will be surprised what it will do. Let us know how she goes.

1st update…

Qatar airways is knocking it out of the park.. check in with the rifles was a breeze.. the guy at the check in counter was polite, attentive, and was prepared for us when we arrived..

Qatar requires a bit more paperwork and has a more elaborate process than other airlines I’ve flown with… but Mohammad at DFW is a rock star.. in less than 30 minutes he had us ready to progress to TSA and then personally escorted us to the TSA station where we had the rifles and cases inspected and stood by until he personally witnessed the TSA agent put the cases on the conveyor belt to be loaded on the plane..

Top notch service from Qatar Airways…

Now we just sit and enjoy a cold one while we wait to board…

So Qatar Airways has been great.. even back here in coach class.. comfortable seats, friendly staff, decent food.. and the second flight from Doha to Joberg is only about 1/3 full, so lots of space to stretch out is available.. the free inflight WiFi is a nice touch as well… I’m typing this as I fly over Mogadishu

Qatar airport police however were a bit of a disaster… they decided I couldn’t have several items and seized them from my bags.. More on that to follow later.. nothing that will have any impact on my hunt.. but they did take items intended for some South African friends.. some of the truly silly and for no justifiable reason.. like 10lbs of powdered steel… but, take them they did.. all while showing me on video that they were taking them…

Landed at OR Tambo this morning… our bags came off the plane quickly and we were through immigration and customs in no kidding 30 minutes… as always @rifle permits did an outstanding job making sure that the transition through SAPS to collect our rifles was a breeze.. we were literally done with SAPS in less than 5 minutes..it took me longer to unlock the cases than it did to get everything else done (get rifles and ammo inspected & sign the log)…

By 10am we were done and ready to head to camp..

Gerrit from @bosendal safaris met us in the welcome hall, and we started heading toward the NW Province, stopping for a quick lunch at a place called Mike’s that serves an incredible blue cheese covered filet for about 1/4 what you’d pay in the states… we also grabbed some biltong at a nice little shop in Rustenburg that will be great for snacking on over the next week..

Once in camp we took a little time to camp and catch a quick nap before getting things started, and at 430 pm we headed to the range to confirm zero on both rifles..

Both the .375 and the .35 Whelen kept all bullets in the red x ring and we were satisfied with zero after just 3 shots from each boom stick… we then took about a 1 hour drive around to familiarize ourselves with the property again and managed to see a ton of game before nightfall including a huge impala ram (25”+… and bigger bodied and taller than most TX whitetail bucks I’ve seen in the past few years), tons of blue wildebeest, eland, and blesbok…

We then settled back into camp for a little time by the fire, a wonderful kudu dish made with minced meat, pasta, cheese, and light vegetables.. and to make plans for the hunt tomorrow…

We’ll start the day chasing eland, finish with bushbuck, and chase what Africa provides in between..

Now it’s off to bed to try to get over the exhaustion associated with 2 days of travel after saying a few prayers of thanks for letting us experience this again..

I’m now officially in my happy place for the next week

Happy your trip has went so well so far. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Hope my next trip ??? goes as smooth as yours or my first two did.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
