Hang in there

And just like that, Casa di Bagent is without electricity again.

Dana Point, CA
I thought it was! It's a long story, but in the late '80s when I worked for the Dana Point Harbor Patrol, I/we (my partner who thought it was a good idea) almost became one with that jetty in our fireboat during a storm. We were hit by a "rogue" wave about a half mile off shore and blew the windshield out of the boat. Fortunately, neither of the 454 twin engines stalled and we limped back to shore with a bunch of water still in the boat. We missed being blown into the jetty by fifty yards. I actually miss the ocean, especially when it's rough. Ha! Ha! Have fun and remember, " Red (sky) at night, sailors delight. Red in the morn, sailors be warned".

... I actually miss the ocean, especially when it's rough. ...

Sailing in gale force winds is no fun though. Double reefed and the jib rolled almost to nothing the boat still keeps on wanting to turn. My lats were sore as heck from fighting the wheel by the time we made it ashore and docked the last time we got caught (sailing from overnighting at channel islands to Santa Barbara).

some of us have some really warm hunting gear. ;)

we were without power for about 36 hours. didn't get too frosty in the house, 51º F was as low as it got.

we are definitely not prepared for Arctic blasts, we got down to 11 or 12º yesterday morning, and tomorrow is looking like about 20º. Last time it was this cold here was 1989, then 1981, then some time in the early '60s before that.

By mid-February here, it's frequently e:ROFLMAO:arly Spring - you'll start seeing the trees sprouting leaves and flowering plants start to bud.
Bah, I'll see your 51 and go to 41. (The dang Kanukistanis are now laughing at me in their igloos).

Some drunk A-hole hit some major NG structure in our little town a few days before Christmas. Best Christmas present I have had lately was when they repaired the lines in my neighborhood on the 25th. O degree bag and camp cooking equipment saved the day (heating and cooking run on NG). Electricity goes off every once in a while here, but I've never seen NG go off until now. I wised up and got an electric space heater in case this might happen again.

All that being said I really feel bad for you Southern folks dealing with unreal weather conditions and hope that you pull through intact and stronger than ever.

Yeah, well nobody (the neophyte sailing idiots) has the sails up in those winds. They bring the sails down and run on their "kicker" diesel engine, until they get their lines wrapped up in their prop while sailing back from Mexico in a storm and then call the harbor patrol to come and get them in the DARK, cause they're helpless and heading for the shore! I have several harrowing harbor patrol stories related to this. Although I've never been DG hunting, I can't imagine the adrenaline rush would be any greater than my "Two years before the mast"? by Richard Henry Dana. Great read.

Monday morning we woke up to 3F which for us is maybe once in a lifetime low temp for west Texas. We have had electrical outages, frozen pipes, and lots of livestock and wildlife feeding to do. Now the feed mills are behind and we are out and waiting on deer feed and stock feed now.
I’m sore from chopping ice on water troughs.
No matter the situation I am dreaming and planning my next safari!

Not really a religious guy, but praying for the best for you and your herd.

I'm sure your safari planning will be a piece of cake compared to what you are currently experiencing. I'm sorry you have to go through this. Keep going one foot forward, prioritize and do what you can, cause that's all you can do.

As we were docking the harbor patrol did come out to take a look, but we managed. That is a great book, one of my favorites.

Thanks. Every time we have this kind of trouble we always try to build back better whatever was damaged. We learn as we go.

Hey it's 21 degrees right now and snowing and I'm grilling a ham steak and some fresh pineapple that I picked from our garden this morning. What's wrong with me! I know, I live in Colorado! Ha! Ha! Ha!

the juice is back on.

i hope this business settles down. I actually need to get some real work done for my employer.

Been like a luxury deer camp gas stove, fireplace and hot water all via natural gas just no power. Warmed up some now helping neighbors fix busted pipes. Houses here not built for 7F temps. Reports of lots of dead exotics in the hill country area.

Hang in there Philip, and good luck and sunny days ahead to all you southern folk

We have an electric furnace in our house. While we do experience power outages, they are normally not more than one day. We have propane space heaters, for when the power does go out. Insulation and heat tape on the pipes.
Here (Illinois) that stuff is normal. I wouldn’t have a space heater or heat tape on the pipes if I was only going to use them every 20 years.

velo dog could not make it out today with me, but i went out hinting for s.s.hares today with my hawk and an air rifle. cold weather is just another day in alaska, but not in the lower 48.

my suggestion... go to woodstock wood stoves, on the east coat, buy their catalytic wood stoves and cut some wood, you will be fine!
