I borrowed this hunting DVD from a friend and spent an hour watching it.IMO, its one of the best cape buffalo hunting films ever made!

I recommend this film to all.If you are the lazy type of a hunter who finds pleasure in driving all day long and collecting Trophies like stamps, then this film isn't for you!

Really interesting to watch and one hell of a Film!

Forgot to say that i'll soon be getting my own copy!!

Mountain Buffalo – Wilderness Hunting in Tanzania

Mountain Buffalo – Wilderness Hunting in Tanzania
review of an exciting DVD

This production by Rainer Josch and his tracker Lorinyu is a film in a class of its own and could be classified a documentary. The film is not a typical hunting production and does not include large amounts of footage on animals being shot. The film is more about huge buffalo trophies being stalked on foot through difficult terrain. You’ll see the magnificent mountain landscape and the rich and diverse wildlife including elephant, lion, and leopard. Rainer’s own words aptly describe the contents, “the pursuing of an animal shall only become interesting when the hunt provides a challenge to the hunter. The taking of an animal should not be too easy, the risk of an unsuccessful outcome adds mystery and personalizes the hunting experience and is therefore a prerequisite...”

The film takes you on three awesome buffalo hunts around Mount Loosimingor in Northern Tanzania with Rainer being the narrator and guide on all three hunts. The hunts shown in the footage are two clients of Rainer, an American and a German, and the last one is of Rainer himself hunting a bull that he has seen often, but he knows his chances of bagging it are not good “…the Cape Buffalo provides one of the biggest challenges in Africa to the modern hunter. Those who have experienced buffalo hunting know about the powerful aura that radiates from this species…” All three are extremely difficult hunts with a great deal of opportunities to take huge trophies, some being successful and some not. This production provides the viewer with all the excitement and nerve-racking intensity of the stalk, the disappointment of failure and the joy, satisfaction and respect created by real hunting.

This movie is of the highest quality and the professional narrative makes it a truly remarkable production. It’s about real hunting—the way it should be. Rainer is completely set on hunting only the older mbogos, the bulls that have left the breeding herds and who have already passed on their genes. He also provides a great deal of insight on his thoughts of hunting and how this type of hunting is second to none “…there can hardly be a more pristine way in emerging yourself in nature than to hunt. Hunting is not the quarry, the gain or the trophy. Hunting is the trail, the path and a stalk. It gives me the most intense way of experiencing nature and myself, particularly on a mountain hunt for cape buffalo…It is only through such a process of elevated consciousness with great respect for the animal and an appreciation for the magnificence of creation that anyone can truly say ‘I hunt’.”

The narration gives a choice between English, Danish, French, Spanish, German to be selected when starting the movie (the section with the German client has subtitles in English).

Thanks M'bogo hunter for the review on this hunting DVD, sounds good!

You are welcome Jerome! This is a very good hunting film and as African Indaba puts it, "its a film in a class of its own and could be classified a documentary".

More info about Rainer himself can be seen on his site; Rainer Josch's Wild Africa.

Hi guys, very good review, i have also seen this DVD and found it brilliant. A breath of fresh air from the usual hunting films. Ive also met Rainer Josch and found his views and opinions extremely ethical and the film really gives a true representation of the guy. Our clients who have hunted with him have also had excellent experiences and some very impressive trophies.

I like Rainer and the way he hunts. He truly is ethical. Its great that you have met him Kyle0.I wish i could meet him too.

Yeh its very refreshing to find a ph who wants to get out and actually cover some ground on foot, as opposed to driving upto everything.
Thats where the real skill in hunting is, not just the marksmanship. You gotta be able to get in close and use some real fieldcraft.
Rainer also does alot of hunts combined with a chap called Matt Lloyd Simms, maybe also worth checking out if he has similar productions.

Cheers
kyle

Thanks Kyle0 for the info on Matt Lloyd Simms, i'm gonna check him out.I believe he has to be a good and ethical hunter to team up with Rainer.

Glad you guys enjoyed Rainer's work... i am glad to say that we have shared a few hunts together and he contributed largely in his early days to promoting the Kilombero. He is one of the better hunters out there and when it comes to buffalo, he is totally consumed. He is one of the few that will give you a raw and real experience of hunting Tanzania. A true PH and great guy. Highly reccommended to anyone interested in a real hunting safari.

Guys, I just got my copy of Mountain Buffalo! Ryan its great that you recommend him for "a real hunting safari". Cheers.

Mbogo Hunter,
Greetings, this is Popo from Tanzania. As a matter of interest where did you source the Mountain Buffalo DVD. Reading the review and comments am keen to get one right away.
Cheers.

sorry to bring up an old topic but this video just made my christmas want list. Not sure how I missed it last year. Does anyone know what outfitters/guides are used and where they are hunting? I have not seen mountain buffalo hunts advertised.

Rastaman,

The guide is Rainer Joesch, and he mostly operates in the Loosimingor mountains where the film was made. He runs his own company, Wild Africa challenge expeditions, which operates in different areas in Tanzania. More info about him can be sourced at Welcome to Wild Africa, The Hunter's Challenge or Rainer Joesch's Wild Africa Challenge Hunting Expedtions. The film Mountain Buffalo can also be ordered directly from the first site listed above which is in both English and German.

He's new film, buffalo hunters, which is also being filmed at Mount Loosimingor, is due to be released on January - February 2011. Here's the facebook page dedicated to this coming soon movie where you will find more info about it including plenty of photos and some short clips which will be part of the movie, .Facebook - Buffalo Hunters - Rainer Joesch Films

I hope this info will be useful and trust me he's among the best you could find out there.
