While we don't get much Canadian news in my neck of the world, I just read an article on the new leader of the Conservative Party - Erin O'Toole. His emphasis on restructuring the Canadian economy stressing long term jobs with wage justice and bringing manufacturing back to Canada etc sound very promising. I think a generation has been lost in most western countries as jobs, technology, manufacturing etc were outsourced to China - short term profits but long term social and economic destruction.

Can any of our Canadian members give any insight on his attitude to firearms and hunting? (Mind you, anything would be preferable to the current PM).

O’Toole Pitches Most-Detailed Gun Policies for Conservative Leadership

3 min read

TheGunBlog.ca — Erin O’Toole proposed the most-detailed and comprehensive gun policies today of any of the four candidates running to lead the Conservative Party of Canada.
The military veteran outlined plans for both a role in opposition and in case he is elected prime minister in the next general election. See platform below.
“An O’Toole government will update Canada’s firearms legislation to ensure that it is evidence-based and focuses on keeping Canadians safe, not demonizing those Canadians the Liberals do not like,” said the platform, titled “Our Country: A Call to Take Back Canada.”

Why It Matters
  • O’Toole has been a strong defender of Canada’s roughly 3 million gun owners for years.
  • All four Conservative leadership candidates have outlined measures to protect safe and responsible hunters, farmers and sport shooters. All other major parties favour prohibitions and confiscations.
  • Gun policies are only one of many important considerations for a future Conservative leader or prime minister.
  • Today is the last day to submit a video question for next week’s candidate debates.

I don't mind discussing politics if the aspects discussed directly relate to hunting (in Canada or the world) and transportation of firearms. I believe by way of extrapolation that hunting in Canada, firearms import/export for recreational activities or importation of trophy animals will not be curtailed given Mr. O'Toole's stated policies on gun ownership.

<Just checked the above links...my apologies as seen to not work in the post>

I believe mr. O’Toole is our last hope to salvage the country while there’s anything last to save. However I also believe the liberals in high positions in the media industry in canada namely the bell media group also need to go if we stand a chance of retaining our traditional Canadian values.

The rifle on the wall of the labourers cottage is the symbol of democracy it is our job to see that it stays there. Quote George Orwell.

I believe the fundamental difference between left and right can be attributed to the defining of this quote. When I was in high school a political science teach asked us our interpretation of the quote. The fundamental difference between leftist thinking and right becomes evident in the spirit of how the rifle is taken down. Where the left view the rifle as a privilege to hang there those few of us on the right viewed it as the only true defence of the labourers freedom.

Thanks for the update on his attitude. Seems like he may be one of those rare politicians with enough sense to actually be worth voting for :). I have relatives in Canada and frequently visit. Its pained me to see how things deteriorated after Harper.

I'd love to do a legal handgun hunt in Canada, but that may be a step too far for Canadians after all these years of anti-gun propaganda.

Currently I believe that the only hope we have remaining in Canada to rescind or repeal the draconian measure that the current Liberal (read leftist) government has implemented (through and Order in Council) without any democratic debate is the Conservative Party, currently led by Erin O'Toole. Regarding handgun hunting in Canada, I guess if you can encourage a trophy class animal to stray onto an officially approved gun range, I suppose you could shoot it there. The only individuals that I know of that can carry a handgun for use (other than law enforcement) are trappers after they have proven their competencies with one.

Don't jump to conclusions. Just because it is illegal doesn't mean a lot of folks don't want the same thing. But it will never happen.
