New from Montana

Welcome aboard 35400Whelen. No 400(s) for me but I do have a couple of 35(s). I've taken mine to Africa twice. It was built on an old 03-A3 action and wears a Boyd's Laminate stock. With my reloads I'm getting 2730 FPS pushing a 225 Gr. Barnes TSX with slightly better than 1 MOA accuracy. What are your thoughts and or plans for hunting Africa?
Looks like your doing good with that banes bullet in your 35W. I'm getting 2600fps with the nosler 225gr. partition, 24" barrel 1-14 twist. I can go hotter but my groups were starting to get bigger. So I went with this load and it is very accurate, about 1/4" at 100 yards if I do my part. I have some speer 250gr. bullets to try and some hawk 275gr. on the way. I also have some hawk 350gr. for the 400W. on the way.

As to hunting Africa, I have never been there but have thought about it from a young age. Don't know if I'll ever have the money but if I get the chance I'll more then likely go.

I just got my 35W out of the shop, needed a recrown on a gun that had never been fired but was a casualty of my last divorce. Looking forward to giving her a go this weekend maybe

I made the top post this morning and paged You as I found you had not found the Whelen reference when I came back

I am married too but if I ever stop noticing other women I will check my own pulse.

Welcome to AH! I am over in the bitterroot.

Didn't say I didn't notice them, just that I'm married. I might be old mate but I still see things.

I've read his story on 400 Whelen mate. If'n he likes the Whelen I don't mind having a brother from another mother. I'm sure Shootist43 and his son will chime in as well we are all 35 lovers. You might consider one over that little 300 wimpchester magnum.

Don't listen to CBH mate he's on of those 243 owners mate and doesn't like class.
Those Nosler 225s are going a bit slow. Mine are at 2,850 fps with 3/4 inch groups my 250s are running 2,700 fps with the same accuracy, that's with a 25 inch barrel and 1 in 12 twist.
Took mine to Namibia and it did the job well. Shop around Africa is cheaper than elk from what I've been hearing.
Cheers mate Bob

Bob, I learned the term Needmore today in a thread. Ive never been near one but there seems to be 2 camps for the new kid 6.5, My early reading suggested there were not a lot of suitable hunting projectiles. 6.5 swede owners possibly disagree but i guess with he new hotshot the focus went to developing new long range bullets for the new market.

They are a bit slow but still have a good thump, I tested some hotter loads but the group was not as tight so I decided to go with the most accurate load. I'm hopping to try the speer 250gr with cfe223 before fall, I'm hopping they do well.
