Anti-Hunting Book Coming Out Against "TROPHY HUNTING" and CITES

We need to have a PR engine as good as they have. SCI and DSC are doing a quite poor job of this and, IMO, SCI's trigger campaign has not helped at all. I think that showing off the successes of conservation such as the saving of species and the increasing of game head and distributions will work. We should also provide services since it's really easy to just put an infographic on FB without any resources as these people do.

I wholeheartedly agree. SCI and DSC have been reading too heavily from the LaPierre-era NRA playbook. Stirring up fear of "anti" is great at temporarily driving up membership and donations, but it also does considerable harm to the reputation of all facets of the industry. I love the idea of providing services that demonstrate the great work that hunting does for conservation. Some good initiatives could be establishing and funding a network of game wardens, media campaigns and investigative journalism targeting poachers and buyers, or even a 4H style club to foster an interest in conservation careers.

See the best part about my anthro major is that it gives you the ability to dissect what really makes people tick.

A new book with nothing new to say.
“Shame on hunters, shame on hunters.......Because we don’t like hunting not that we have any solutions for the future of wildlife!“

I am still hopeful that the UK will not ban trophy imports but this doesn’t help.

Hey Phillip, do you agree that constant emphasis on the antis is hurting pro-hunting campaigns? IMO, it gives off a massive aura of paranoia and the like. I think a better plan would be to emphasize what we do and why. Break it down into simple concepts and make sure anything we say is backed up by evidence such as Bubye, Coutada 11, the programs of SA, Nam, etc.

We need to take things more seriously and make a stand against these bastards . If we do not take the threat , seriously ... Then , the entire world may end up like India some day : A vegan , anti hunting socialist utopia . We need to be more unified and take active steps against this type of propaganda . We need to start campaigns and programs , like these swines do .

We need to start raising awareness about the environmental benefits of hunting . And about how hunting and conservation go , hand in hand . We need to reach out to our younger generations . Educate them , before vegan indoctrination gets to them . Make them understand what loving nature ... Is really about. .

I was flipping through some television channels a few days , back . I noticed a children’s animated film named , “ Open Season” . The film basically portrays hunters as psychopaths .When children watch films like this ... What do you think their out look on hunting , shall be ?These anti hunters have even managed to insert their filthy agendas in to children’s cartoons .

This Eduardo swine ... He wrote vile lies about our community . About gun makers ( Such as Mr. Paul Roberts ) . Is there no way ... That legal action may be taken against him ?

Such aggressive rhetoric won't win us allies. We CANNOT resort to insults, slander, and the like the way the antis do. Otherwise, there's no winning in convincing them of our side. Especially not of people who are generally not on either side

The book is written by the person fronting the trophy hunting ban. International and domestic events have lead to a loss of traction with his campaign and this is just his way of trying to get himself and his campaign back into the limelight.

In a sense you are probably right. While we must confront every attack on hunting we do need to rise above the noise and continue to tell our story of conservation success. We desperately need more films like Trophy that get he conservation message to the masses. Hard to do.

I agree with you, and have said this for ages. As a fraternity we must coalesce our resources to provide a unified and consistent front. It amazes me that we can spend thousands each year on hunts, yet can't be bothered to contribute anything for the future preservation of our sport AND highlight the deliberate bias in their views.

After the failure of the anti-hunting driven, 5yr moratorium on elephant hunting in Botswana, that government kindly told those idiots to piss off and let the Botswanan game authorities resume managing their system - which had hitherto been (and proven!) to run successfully for decades.

It seems to me that we sport hunters have a: "I'm doing ok Jack - but screw you!" mentality. If we lose our sport through our short-sightedness, or to roll over and passively accept their propaganda, then we have no-one else but ourselves to blame.

I saw this recently:

When an environmentalist discovers that hunting helps wildlife" on YouTube

- but as it's from Fieldsports, no doubt the antis will scream its biased and unfair - which, ironically, is quite an acceptable mode of reporting from their perspective!!

Interesting and convenient coincidence is that this book is coming out of press, just at the time when anti-hunting, anti trophy campaign is raging in UK.
So, just another contemporary political pamphlet, like any other, would be my guess. Soon to be forgotten.

Even then, our PR machines, SCI and DSC are kinda faffing about for lack of a better word. Like I was farting around Facebook and I see SCI making a post about Elmer Fudd not having a gun. Now, this decision is idiotic and I'm sure the artists had no say in it but is this really how you're advocating for us? Also, as discussed earlier, the fear-mongering and name-calling of naysayers make SCI, and hunters as a whole look like a bunch of out of touch boomers.

One follow on question to ask ourselves is, "would you still hunt in Africa even if you couldn't export/import trophies?". I would answer for myself as "yes". I'd take better and more photos and just have very high quality prints done.

Next follow on question would be, "would I be willing to pay the same "trophy fee", to just bring back photos?" I would answer for myself is...."probably not". The reason is I don't hunt for the sake of collecting "mounts" or chasing "inches". I hunt to hunt and for me the mounts we've brought home are more like "keepsakes" of the memory of the trip. Can also do that with photos albeit to a different extent - better or worse is in the eye of the beholder.

I actually agree with one aspect of the article: CITES has outlived its usefulness.

Anti-hunting organizations have not had much success in stopping hunters, so they have adopted a page from the environmentalists playbook: don't go after the one you really want to stop, but rather go after the distribution or other channels that they rely on. CITES is one of those channels. It was meant to regulate trade, and has now been co-opted by anti-hunting organizations to ban trade in animals which are not endangered in the least (giraffes in southern Africa for example). If trade is banned, fewer will hunt. Simple. They have also gone after airlines with great success, and are now going after governments which are easily swayed (British Columbia (grizzly bears), California (hunting trophies); the UK, the US (with its own rules on trade in species notwithstanding CITES), etc).

These same activists are now using the COVID-19 pandemic to urge governments to stop all trade in wildlife and all eating of, and interaction with, wildlife by humans. The annual deer harvest alone in the US was more than 330 million pounds of meat in 2017. When it comes to Africa, what alternative sources of protein do these people expect to provide to a hungry continent? With proper regulation, wildlife is a renewable resource which provides humans with enormous benefits.

When it comes to hunting organizations like SCI and DSC, they need to acknowledge two things:

1. We need to keep the silent majority on our side by constantly demonstrating that hunting is a powerful force for conservation. They are reasonably good at this, but could always be better.

2. We need to attack the animals rightists head on. There is no point in trying to get them on our side. These activists are not in favour of less poaching, or better regulated hunting. They are against the killing of any animals for any reason. They will lie, cheat and steal from the public in pursuit of their aims. We cannot reason with these people. That means every hunter and every organization supported by hunters' dollars needs to step up and let the world know the good we are doing, while relentlessly exposing the antis for what they are.

I think getting the silent majority on our side is our current biggest priority. If they can understand the values of big game hunting, it'll be a great asset. I'd also like to make it so that we don't have to worry about something as superficial as red and blue to determine trophy imports. The constant 4-year flip flop of rules is a pain for hunters and such political superficiality needs to be a milestone we can get over. Like if Biden wins, there's a good chance that trophy imports will be much harder to get a hold of, meaning that we cannot rely on something as fleeting as parties.

Something missing from this discussion is trophy hunting ethics. The anti-hunters are purely emotional while trophy hunting incorporates many business aspects and that is a problem for us. Films like Trophy where it shows an outfitter selecting crocs from a croc farm to be shot by a disrespectful hunter or films like Blood Lions do great immediate harm to the image of hunting. Canned/farm raised/captive bred (whatever you would like to call it) lion shooting does extreme harm to the conservation message of trophy hunting. I disagree with other practices but this is the most visible. These practices continue because the money is more important than the ethics. A thread on here about contributing to anti-poaching will get no attention but the thread about captive bred lion shooting will get 10 pages with the most common sentiment being I will never have the money for a wild lion so it’s ok. It really hurts the conservation message.
I’ve posted this article before, it has some very interesting views.

I agree with the points made by 375Fox, but as the antis love to besmirch our reputation with any and every negative to make us out as psychopathic killers, I think we need to include in any cohesive effort to constantly remind the silent majority of some of the daily hypocrisies these antis and vegans live by, right in their homes, namely:
1) being vehemently against hunting (usually in a foreign country to theirs) but yet doing NOTHING about the activities down at their local abbatoir.
2) not holding protests outside their local McDonald's Burger King, every restaurant etc - as agencies which fuel the slaughter in abbatoirs.
3) not boycotting the use of fertilisers (as used in their gardens and any vegan' s vegetable patch) as a by-product of abbatoirs and fisheries.
4) enjoying the televised cruelty of of struggling fish (as they suffocate) in every fishing program they watch!!

Furthermore, I've debated with militant vegans who still refuse to respond to the hypocrisy of their lifestyle as doing more damage to the environment than does our legal, prudent and sustainable game managed sport. When told that farmers need to first clear more land for the exclusive use to grow vegetables - and then control/kill every living organism that tries to feed on that vegetable crop (vegans source of food) - they go strangely quiet and shut up. No doubt realising the disastrous impacts of THEIR lifestyle choices upon the earth being more profound than the controlled sport hunting we do.

Faced with these hypocrisies every antagonist I've debated with - including online with that twit Eduardo Gonsalves - has shut up. IMO it's about time we expose the hypocrisies of the antis and vegans AND - as living within their society - how society tacitly condones all these activities, yet (hypocritically) vilifies ours!!
