"Tiger Rifle" For Sale In .405 Winchester

I have intimately fond memories of this rifle . A .405 Winchester calibre Model 1895 lever rifle is the very 1st fire arm in my life ... Which I had ever used to hunt a game animal ( A sambhur deer in 1951 ) . My maternal grand father , Sepoy Jalaluddin Khan had purchased 1 in 1931 ... From Manton & Co. in Calcutta . Aside from the standard game for the pot ... He also dispatched 5 man eating forest panthers , 2 man eating royal Bengal tigers and 1 rogue bull elephant, with the aid of that rifle .He always used 300 grain ICI Kynoch soft point cartridges and solid metal covered cartridges .

1 of my life’s biggest regrets ... Is that I let my grand father sell that beautiful rifle in 1968 , once he had expended his supply of ICI Kynoch cartridges ( ICI Kynoch had already ceased to manufacture central fire rifle cartridges completely , by 1963 ) . Never once , did I ever imagine ... That some day , bullets and cartridge cases for the .405 Winchester calibre ... would once again become available . I would have very much liked to have owned that magnificent rifle , today . It was devastatingly efficient on royal Bengal tigers .

Thank you so much for sharing this , Scrumbag . It re kindled numerous fond memories in me .

For the great cats it would be difficult to pick a more effective combination than a .405 caliber SP.

What about export to Africa? Spike can keep it, I'll pay for it, and someone at auction site can buy it.....................lots of win-wins here.............FWB

A dealer in UK has to apply for an export license and the dealer here an import license.... Then when that's sorted the UK dealer ships it here ...there will be import duty based on sale value...Paul has shipped couple of my rifles here to the dealer I use including three I think second hand rifles the dealer bought from Paul.....not sure what the shipping cost is....but looking at having Paul possibly send couple or so more of my guns he has in storage here...

What about export to Bangladesh? Major Kahn can keep it, we'll pay for it...... everyone visiting Bangladesh can sit around campfire with Major Kahn, listening his storys..... lots of win-wins here....... (y)HWL

Yes , Sir ! That is 100 % correct . In modern times ... This performance is only enhanced , for certain . @crs and I once enjoyed a magnificent conversation about how these excellent rifles ( Especially the currently manufactured variants ) may be modified to use cartridges loaded with 400 grain bullets ( As opposed to the standardized 300 grain bullets of our time ) .

That is a most generous and kind proposition for you to make , HWL .But please do not burden yourself . These are tough times for every one across the world ... As it is .

How telling is it that the auction is expected to fetch around 1200 GBP but this American gunshop has a .405 M1895 rifle for 3x that price?

https://www.collectorsfirearms.com/winchester-1895-takedown-405-w10655/

Do the Brits just not realize the value of the weapons after their misguided condemnation of civilian firearm ownership, or do we Americans just insist on overpricing our guns only because there's a famous name inscribed on the side of it?

Low estimates are common to draw bidders. I have bought several rifles overseas and please be careful as the costs can multiply quickly. If the rifle sells for 2000 pounds (which is a very good price) first add 22% for the buyer's premium, then will be a charge to pack, apply for permits, and transport to the shipper. Add air freight over the pond, pay an importer for his services, pay fees to the storage at the airport, pay for a customs broker, possibly pay a customs duty, pay to repack and then postage to your FFL, The FFL's fee. And, then it's yours.

All that written I may bid on this one but will bid low as a rifle in this condtion with the British proofs is worth $5000, ballpark, maybe less. The last two rifles I imported (Zimbabwe and Australia) cost $2000 each AND they didn't come with the auction fees (premium, packing, transport, licenses).

With all the associated costs 1200 is fair, 1500 pounds is the limit to keep the delivered price to 5000USD.
For what it's worth...

You are right,.... but this is a remarkable rifle we should not leave.

I will try a bid....looking for whatever happens.

I hope that I don't end up in a bidding war with anyone here, but I am going to take a shot (pun intended) at buying this rifle. I have been looking for an Indian 1895 for some time and I figure that this one is at a great starting price, although I expect that it won't be cheap by the time the bidding has stopped and the shipping has been completed!

Gents:
An update on the .405. I will not bid on the rifle as the barrel has been cut. The advertisement said the barrel was 22 1/2". I wrote asking to measure the barrel from muzzle to the breech here it meets the bolt face. Here is there reply below. Also, they don't ship out of the country so the buyer has to find his own shipper and do the permitting. Far more time consuming and expensive than I thought. Again, I'll pass on this one and concentrate on an identical rifle for sale here in the USA. The condition is near 100% blue and it has sling eyes. I would guess the reason for such a low estimate is the cut barrel.

Hi Cal,
Good to hear from you, I have always wanted to visit Alaska.
In order to register to bid you will need to click on 'My Account' on our home page, then 'sign in' where you can create an account and then place bids.

One thing that would be worth doing before bidding is to organise who will ship any guns you buy out to the USA. Firearms restrictions in the UK are frustratingly complex and therefore it would be worth making contact with a company that can navigate round all the tidious paperwork that needs to be done in order to get a rifle to you. It is also quite expensive to do this so worth checking out first. If you do not have a company in mind I would try HGSS, details below.

Lot 13 the Winchester is pretty good. I have had the pleasure of shooting this rifle before the owner sadly passed away. It certainly kicks on a full load on a summers day!
The take down is tight when together and I can feel no wobble when the action is closed or open. The measurement you requested is 23".

Please let me know if you need any more info.
Kind regards

Chris Large

What would the correct length be?

Contact the shipper to get a quote on all of the costs involved. With a cut barrel teh value is 2500-3000USD. To get it here even with the low estimate of sales would far exceed its value.
Again, I will pass.

Very welcome sir!

As mentioned I will pass on this rifle due to the cut barrel and the cost and complexity of getting the rifle to me. So, today I purchases a near identical rifle that was for sale on the internet months ago. The only difference is my new toy has eyes for the Winchester sling. Other than that, it's identical: takdeoiwn, shotgun butt, has the British proofs I enjoy, and the bluing is near perfect. The rear sight on my rifle is a four leaf Winchester sight that looks like the typical English style. Best of all, it comes with several boxes of ammunition, dies, shell holder, bullets and brass. I over paid several hundred dollars (in my opinion) but it's not for resale as it's 100% the style and condition I desire. In my collection of pre war double rifles from the UK, I like to add a Winchester lever in an appropriate caliber (.405, .50-95, .50-1110) with British proofs just to add to the shooting fun and a fantasy of "where it could have been). I took a .405 model '95 to Zimbabwe on my first hunt in 1994. Perhaps it's time to do it again and include models 1876 and 1886 and maybe a single shot model 1885.
