Maybe a peculiarity to that specific revolver that I'm guessing was a less than renowned Glisenti Bodeo M1889 with the lack of more specifics in that article.
Perhaps he had a significant life insurance policy as well and paid the askaris better than he did as another possibility. Since the revolver exploded as part of this unfortunate event I assume it was rendered unavailable for any but the most cursory forensic inquest.
