I think a considerable number of Italians were wounded in Ethiopia in the 1930's.
 
Twice? How was he in any shape to shoot again if it hit him in the chest? Sounds kinda fishy.
 
Maybe they got to his wife and she did it.
 
Maybe a peculiarity to that specific revolver that I'm guessing was a less than renowned Glisenti Bodeo M1889 with the lack of more specifics in that article.

Perhaps he had a significant life insurance policy as well and paid the askaris better than he did as another possibility. Since the revolver exploded as part of this unfortunate event I assume it was rendered unavailable for any but the most cursory forensic inquest.
