How many double rifles do you own?

After buying , shooting and hunting with my first Verney Carron in 577NE about 7 years ago, I fell in love with both VC and double rifles. I now have a few and am absolutely loving everything about them.

I might be proven wrong someday, but I truly believe that they might also be a good investment.

From left to right.600NE( Imperial),577NE ( Imperial, 577NE (ph round body), 500 NE,(ph r/body),500NE(ph r/body), 470NE( ph r/body)450NE( ph r/body) ,450-400NE small bodyView attachment 342742.

Best part about them, is that all have them have put one of the big 5 in the salt.( I’m very grateful for that)

Beautiful collection of French rifles !!

Just one for now, but I hear they tend to multiply. ;) I just recently acquired a Left Handed Heym 88B PH in .500 NE. It is my "lockdown" project to develop regulated loads with Cutting Edge bullets. Several hundred bullets arrived a few days ago.

That is a fantastic looking collection, and that they all have a story behind them is even better

At the moment I have,
Heym 470NE SxS
Heym 450-400 SxS
Krieghoff 500-416 SxS
CZ Stopper 458 Lott,was formerly a 458 Win,O/U
Brno 375 H & H,O/U
I did have a Chapuis in 9.3x74R in the past,I have hunted all these guns, the last one I would let go would be my Stopper.

Please explain the appeal of your Stopper. I am truly curious - you can obviously afford more expensive rifles, but apparently they are not better for you. Most other people would assume more cost = more sophisticated features and more satisfaction. I have been in similar situations involving some unusual choices of hunting equipment but not often. Please educate us!

I would like to have at least one double rifle in 450/400Jeffery. This is my dream.

I agree with you Witold,

A well made double in 450/400 Jeffery would be wonderful.
Great minds think alike.
(If I could afford it, I would order a new Heym in that caliber).

Cheers,
Paul.

I did forget to mention that I have also had in the past a Merkel 470 NE,that rifle was sold to a friend & it is still hunting well.
RE- THE STOPPER,it has a short barrel,20 or 21 ",it swings better than all my other rifles,it is accurate with bullet weights of 350,400,450 & 500 grains,it is just a weapon made to be used, solid rib, strong action, built like a tank,I have killed my only Elephant with that gun, many will tell you that an O/U is not a DR or that a belted cartridge is not suitable for a DR,this gun proves that BS to be wrong:),this gun can be loaded for any hunting situation & it is boringly easy to load for & crazy accurate.

Bill73,
On some forum, in some thread, in a post, you recently mentioned your interest in adding a .45-70 DR to your DR collection. If and when it ever stops raining down here in North Texas and you come down to blast some feral hogs, you can shoot my Beretta .45-70 DR and have an idea of what you might be getting into with one of your own. I have plenty of .45-70 ammo for both of us. A close up:

And a field pic:

Velo Dog,
My my Simson&CO Suhl .405 WCF shoots both 300 and 400 grain .411 bullets well. The 400 grain Hornady and Woodleigh loads run 2050 fps MV and that is a typical velocity for factory 450/400 400 grain ammo.
It kills things from hogs to Nilgai and red deer just fine, but I have yet to hunt DG with it.

BTW, this Red deer hind hind was taken with 300 grain Barnes at 2250 fps MV ; the hind is good eating; my family likes it as well as they do elk.

I am looking forward to our hunt when it happens,in fact a couple of my DR shooting buddies are thinking about it as well, exotics & hogs:)

Hi crs,

Several years ago on a rifle range, I fired a few shots (Hornady 300 gr factory loads) from a .405 double and it was very enjoyable.
The rifle was stoutly built by Frank Pachmeyer (Pachmayer?) and so marked.
Likewise, it regulated perfectly with the 300 grainers, at what I presume was about 2,300 fps.
The only issues were that it was built on a 12 gauge frame and also, it had short (24”) barrels.

IMO it should’ve been done up on a smaller frame and likewise 26” barrels would’ve been more to my liking.
Even with short barrels, the rifle was too wide and too heavy for this cartridge.
It felt in my hands like it was about 11 pounds.
From what I can see of your Simson .405 double, it looks properly slim and beautifully proportioned for the cartridge.

Cheerio for now,
Velo Dog.
