I want a new knife. Do i really need one? No.
But, i have become obsessed with knifes, and stuff that will last my lifetime.

I own several good knifes, some Eka, some Mora, a Fällkniven H1, a Gerber..the list goes on.

The ones that usually gets to go hunting is a Eka Swede 10 and the H1.
Now im looking at the Fällkniven S1x or A1x.

I do want the x model though. I want to use it as a allround knife, hunting, camping, fishing, you name it. That doest say that i wont be carrying another knife too.

Which one to get? Your thoughts? My fear is that the A1 might be a little big for field dressing an animal.

Like you, I have more knives than I will ever get to use or even have to re-sharpen. And I am NOT a knife collector!! I think knives just happen. They are usually not that expensive, are fairly easy to obtain and don't carry the baggage of "restrictive govmnt. crap" that firearms do... yet. I have most varieties: from 3-4 hundred year-old antiques to hand-me-down junk to good quality utility types to fairly expensive custom. A few of the Bucks that I class as good quality utility, have already lasted a lifetime and they are hard to fault.

I've had a stainless Rapala (Marttiini) fillet knife for quite a while- practical, easy to sharpen and does exactly what it is supposed to do. Recently I've purchased a couple of carbon steel Nordic utility varieties. A Mora and a Marttiini. They reflect pure utility, with ergonomic, no slip handles. Time will tell about the steel- supposed to be decent quality. I can't help but believe they too will give a lifetime of good service. At about 15$ each shipped, really hard to argue with giving them a try. :)

For all around utility, I favor the S1x.

Most of my knives are around that size.

Yeah, im leaning towards S1x to. However i like the heaviness of the A1x.
And, although i want a allround knife, i still will be using and carrying my other knifes. Just that this one have to be able to gut a boar, skin a deer, do feathersticks, kill a pike, cut my hotdogs by the fire..

Ah, yes nice knife. Whats the price and are you willing to ship to Sweden?
The Bushcraft Hunter is US$205 (with either sheath option) and shipping to Sweeden is no problem. I ship to many worlwide destinations by tracked international courier (US$55)

What do you think of Helle? Mine has been very good. When the crew were skinning the knives were all coming in for me the sharpen and then back on the job. The Helle came in only once, the others two or three times.

I generally prefer high carbon steel for blade material.
Higher maintenance, but better edge retention IMO.

Been on the Battle Horse Knives wagon for a while now.
I currently have the BHK Highlander.
Lusting after the BHK Patriot Scout, currently backordered.

You can never have too many knives.

Its good knife. Fore sure!
But, honestly, i do prefer to buy swedish. Especially these days.
Now, i know that Fällkniven are made in Japan and Eka is probably made in China or Portugal. But, at least they are Swedish companys.

But im open to get something made by a non Swedish company to, but they have to offer something that i cannot get here..

Yes, im a patriot. Cant help it.

Now I am going to have to look on it to see if it says where it's made.....probably Sweden as had it a few years....but...

Are we talking Fällkniven? They have never made a knife in Sweden. The first F1 were made in Germany and later i Japan.

Eka, im not sure. But for the price level it cant be done in Sweden.

Helle, is a Norwegian company.

Mora is a Swedish company to, they used to make their knifes here. Today, i dont know.
My first knife, was a Mora, with a blue wooden handle. Given to me by my grandad. I was maybe 8 years old or so.
It had a, made not beautiful, but in a bulid quality you just dont see today, leather sheath.

It was crazy sharp! It make me sad that its gone..

Oh well thought they all were made in the different Scandinavian countries.....had a few different ones but having to remove all my belongings a few years ago from the residence at the time....things have gone AWOL....:mad:

My favourite one from them was the idun ..bought it at the Madrid hunting show around 10 or more years ago...they had the Damascus blade version there as well....but somehow sanity prevailed.....then I ended up on the town with some new zealand outfitters and the Damascus knife would have been so much cheaper......:E Doh:...forgot about this one as it's one of the ones gone AWOL...but consider it..very nice knife

#1- Von Gruff because it’s hand made by a site member and appear to be top notch craftsmanship.
#2- Local knife maker who makes something you like so you can support your local businesses.
#3- Enzo folding knife because it’s what I use and have found no fault in it yet. D2, thumb stud, white linen micarta (can find it in the woods better than dark colors), big enough but not too large, holds an edge reasonably well, I suppose it would cut a hotdog if you ever found a need to do so.

I have had the same question so Im in the process of building one myself. Im just waiting on my D2 steel to arrive. @Von Gruff has been very kind and has given me some tips. I might even start a thread on the the knife build

I EDC ( Every Day Carry ) a Buck Model 110 . It is an older model ( But in spotless condition ) and has a 440 C stainless steel blade ( as opposed to the 420 High Carbon stainless steel blades found on newer models ) . While it loses it's razor sharp edge , relatively quickly ... it holds a working edge long enough to field dress 2 cheetal deer ... before I strop it a few times on a coarse piece of leather and have it shaving sharp , once more .
Only 1 word of warning is requisite : Never , EVER attempt to sharpen a 440 C stainless steel blade on Arkansas stones ... unless you wish to kill your entire day . Use a diamond home , or better yet ... Silicone Carbide .
