Hi there, I'm a relatively new hunter in my 30s located in TX. I've been hunting for about 3 years now, started with birds but just started hunting deer last year, and I'm hooked. Trying to slowly introduce myself to bigger game, I love the mystique of hunting and how it allows one to commune with nature. Also am a longtime fan of hunting novels, especially Hemingway. Green Hills of Africa first got me interested in safari and I recently re-read it and now have begun the process of planning to one day visit Africa. It may take me many years of planning and saving but I am sure the process will be worth it.

I'm also an avid shooter and beginner collector of fine vintage hunting firearms. I am privileged to own 2 original Oberndorf Mauser sporters in good hunting calibers (.30-06, 7x57 Mauser) that I hope to hunt with in the future. Also am beginning an obsession over double rifles, hope to own one and take it to Africa one day!

I've been lurking on this forum for over a year now reading hunting reports and dreaming of Africa, finally made an account and hope to dive into all this community has to offer going forward!

Welcome to the forum, @ms86 . You should try and join us at the annual Africahunting.com dinner held during the Dallas Safari Club Convention every year. Would be great to put a face to the name.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

Hello and welcome!

Welcome aboard ms86. Where in "central" Texas? You certainly have a nice pair of rifles to start off with.

Welcome to AH ms86! Glad you decided to join the conversation.

Welcome. Live in East Texas, but my youngest son lives there in Austin.

I am new to this site as well, but have really enjoyed reading the African hunt adventures. Found a number of videos that are wonderful as well.

Good luck with your hunting endeavors and adventures.

Giday ms86 and welcome to the A H forums

Hello ms86,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Best regards,
Velo Dog.

Thanks to all for the very friendly greetings thus far! I'm excited to participate in this forum. I've already learned so much from reading posts by many of you. I hope to learn much about the practice and art of hunting through this forum.
I will definitely look into attending SCI in Dallas next year. Would be great to also hear from fellow Texans/Texas hunters on their tips and advice for hunting both in Texas/N. America and of course getting to Africa.

Welcome, lots of great info to be had here!

Welcome from North Texas! I have lived in Austin twice (once at the University and once after graduating law school). Love it there. Lots of good hunting in the Texas Hill Country including many African exotics on the game ranches. I also got hooked on Africa as a young man reading Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa. I took it with me on a couple of my hunts in Namibia and South Africa. Just start an African savings account and in a few years you will have the nest egg for a hunt in Africa.
A warning, however: Once you have stalked a kudu or sable or Cape Buffalo in the African bush, if you are like me, you will never again be satisfied to sit in a blind in Texas waiting on a white tail buck to come to a feeder. Take up wingshooting to pass the months between trips to Africa. Look forward to seeing you at the Dallas Safari Club Convention in Dallas in January.

Thank you! Yes I already count wingshooting as a hobby so no troubles there. Would love to also try some bird hunting in Africa as part of a safari. I'm sure this forum has ample resources for Africa savings tips, good choices/locations/outfitters for first safaris, costs/fees, logistics, etc. etc. etc.

And yeah having hunted whitetail from a blind I will say, it's a little boring, I yearn for some more adventure, though it does put meat in the freezer.
