I am a Scottish 19 year old living and farming in Zambia. After this I am taking up a job as an apprentice hunter in Mozambique. I have never hunted in Africa and it’s the closest to an adventure I am ever going to get. What kit will I need and what should I expect from hunting the Zambezi delta and other coutadas?

Welcome to AH berwickshirebuff! Good luck with pursuing your apprenticeship.

berwickshirebuff, welcome to the AH forum! Not being a PH, I can only make assumptions from my limited experience and observations, but I would suggest two rifles.
1) a 375 H&H controlled round feed bolt rifle.
2) a heavy rifle such as a bolt controlled round feed in 458 Lott or even better, a double rifle in 470 NE or 500 NE.
I believe you would have most DG and PG situations covered.

Maybe some of our forum PHes will participate and give you some actual experienced feedback.
Best of luck in your future plans!

Welcome to AH.

Hello berwickshirebuff,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Your kit ?
Many things will be needed, no doubt.
However, one of the most important will be two pair of sturdy, comfortable walking boots (in case one pair gets soaked or damaged).
Plus, one pair of low top “camp shoes”.

Rifles?
IMO, the ideal African battery would be:

.300 H&H / 6x scope / plus iron sights.
.375 H&H / 4x scope / plus iron sights.
.458 Lott / iron sights only.

In the event ammunition availability will be difficult then, instead of the .300 H&H, buy a .30-06.

If you can afford but one rifle, buy a .375 H&H.

Cheers,
Velo Dog

Welcome to AH! I won't pretend to have an answer as to what a PH should have, I'll let the PHs answer that.
