Damn just flashed on news earthquake in Utah power outages

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit Utah on Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said, knocking out power and rattling residents already shaken up by the coronavirus pandemic.

About 32,000 people lost electricity in the Salt Lake City Area, utility Rocky Mountain Power said.

Some people ran from their homes and into the streets as dishes fell from shelves and pictures from walls. Operations at Salt Lake City International Airport stopped, and the control tower and concourses were evacuated, the airport tweeted. The quake also shut down the light rail service for Salt Lake City and its suburbs.

People in Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada reported feeling the quake. Gov. Gary Herbert warned people to stay away from downtown Salt Lake City while crews checked for possible damage.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, according to the Weather Channel.

The quake's epicenter was located northeast of Magna, Utah, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Japanese flu drug could be effective in treating coronavirus, report says

Patients treated with the drug, which was developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, in Shenzen were found to turn negative for COVID-19 after a median of four days, rather than 11 days for those who were not treated with favipiravir, NHK reported.

Regeneron’s CEO Says We Could Have a Covid-19 Treatment ‘Quickly’: https://www.barrons.com/articles/re...earch-for-a-coronavirus-treatment-51584468863

This approach sounds reasoned. The idea of medicating sick people to keep them off of a ventilator sounds easier to implement than keeping everyone from getting sick in the first place.

I understand this is one interview with one drug company who is obviously convinced of their own ability to pull it off, but it sounds doable. The three tier approach should combat it as quickly as possible.

Apparently, Philadelphia PD has decided to only file to-be warrants for non-violent crimes (auto-theft and burglary among them) in response to coronavirus.

Gee, what could possibly go wrong there.

I normally carry Glaser Safety Slugs and keep a spare magazine with hollow-points. I am now only carrying the hollow-points. I foresee a rather large increase in the crime rate temporary.

In the Great State of Texas, one is authorized to used deadly force, or one is not. If you've got a wheel gun and are walking the scrub country where you might run across rattlers pretty routinely, Glasers are a good idea. For EDC...not so much. If you are in fear for your life, or in fear of having serious bodily injury inflicted upon you, you are authorized to use deadly force. That means HPs are justified.

When you are carrying in a crowded room and have thin walls separating you from the next room that is also crowded, they are a great idea.

Is it me or do the things happening with CV awfully lefty feeling: controlling personal freedoms to assemble/running your business; limits on purchasing; potential limits on access to firearms (WI); letting criminals out of jail; decriminalizing “low” crimes; talk of nationalizing healthcare/healthcare goods manufacturing....

Dunno, I don’t believe this is a manufactured event because I trust the people I know on the front lines of this in Seattle, but damn...

Before long, your only passage home may be launching a mokoro down the Zambezi.

That's going to be a long bloody paddle.

I guess I look at it from the other side of the coin. ??? Nothing conspiratory or nefarious going on here with this outbreak, but a timely look into what things could be like if the leftists/socialists achieve their ambitions in the USA. One would hope this realization will dawn on at least some folks.
It actually seems to me that the left should be shitting bricks right now. Going to be a wee bit harder to justify positions on open borders, gun control, etc that the left has built their platform on.
Of course I could be just whistling in the graveyard I suppose...

Dodging RENAMO bullets

Staying away from Malaysian/Indonesian trawlers at night

Acting too poor to be kidnapped by Somalian pirates

Not getting swamped in a Suez lock by a tanker

Dodging Syrian/Afghan refugees being pushed into Greece from Turkey

Seeing baboons on Gibraltar and feeling at home. so stopping for a break.

Turning north into the nice calm waters of the Atlantic in November

Self isolating all the way to avoid the virus

and Home for Christmas!

Cant see any problems with that.;)

We have already had a couple of assaults on elderly people here in northern NV. They have happened to older people leaving grocery stores. Attempts to steal groceries. So far no injuries but I don't like the look of things. As people are put out of work and money gets tight they become desperate. I foresee more assaults, robberies, burglaries, etc.

Lockdown may be well and good for a temporary fix but what happens when it is lifted. Will the virus come back with a vengeance and hit harder than this round? Will it die out? How long will this idiotic lockdown last and who will say when it can be lifted? The whole world can't be shut down indefinitely.

The more I read and hear, the more I believe this is something that is not going away. It is something we are going to live with for however long until a cure can be found. Hopefully a cure can be found that will eradicate it like other diseases in the past. More likely, it will become another annual occurance like the flu, and optimistically, can be combated like the flu. Meanwhile, we live with what we've got and make the best of it.

I always insure my trips with TravelEx, and I always buy their "Cancel For No Reason" rider. It is a couple hundred bucks to add the rider on about a $5,000 insured trip, and if you have to use it, it pays you back 75% of what you insured. This is on top of the regular trip cancellation and interruption coverage's that are 100% and 150%. All you have to do is cancel at least 48 hours prior to your departure date. I always buy this coverage for higher cost trips. Have never had to use it yet, but we came close when we left for England and Ireland on Feb 27th a couple of weeks ago. In the end we made the trip and had to cut it a couple of days short to get back into the US before the UK & Ireland were added to the list of countries that would have required us to go through screening at one of 13 airports. Now we are just exercising social distancing at home for a couple of weeks. But having that "Cancel For No Reason" rider sure is nice when something pops up that isn't on the normal list of reasons for your insurance to reimburse you!

Chinese death rates by age:
10-19 = .2%
20-29 = .2%
30-39 = .2%
40-49 = .4%
50-59 = 1.3%
60-69 = 3.6%
70-79 = 8%
80+ = 14.8%
Overall case fatality rate = 2.3%
FATALITY RATE FOR PATIENTS WITH NO COMORBID CONDITIONS = .9%

This means that 91.9% of fatalities had comorbid (complicating factors). Why don't we just have seniors with complications and others with complications stay home so we can keep our businesses and economy running??? Talk to your politicians with these facts.

I heard today that Italy's deaths are also 99% people with underlying conditions. I am looking into it.
