Wife's recent Build

How does the .300 Holland & Holland magnum compare to the .300 Winchester magnum cartridge ?
I understand the H&H version, like the Norma Mag version, have less case capacity and velocity than the Winchester version. But, they are within the same ballpark performance wise.

That is a very beautiful rifle and in a classic calibre . Your wife has very good taste ! I always hoped that a client would someday bring a .300 Holland & Holland magnum calibre rifle to India , but it was never to be , because ICI Kynoch was no longer manufacturing centre fire rifle cartridges in 1961 when l began my career as a professional shikaree .

Also , was the cheek piece your idea or your wife's ? It is a splendid rifle.
Your really splitting hairs when comparing the two. If handloaded you may be able to wring a bit more out over factory loads but at the end of the day it all came down to nostalgia.
In regards to the cheekpiece, she stayed with a stock configuration that was familiar to her and is used to shooting a few of my M70s that have a cheekpiece.

VERY nice. Love how the pistol grip is more in the English style. I find it looks and feels more elegant. Has she shot it yet??
Indeed she has and is a welcome relief to see how well it fits and functions for her. I've asked to fire a couple rounds but that didnt turn out in my favor so I'm the designated spotter during her range time...

Thank you so much for your explanation , Pheroze . I love the .300 Winchester magnum calibre.

Wouldn't converting a VZ24 or any non-magnum-length Mauser require having some metal removed from the receiver? I'd thought about doing that myself but I was advised against it on another forum because of that issue. Decided instead to stick with 9.3x62 on a Mauser and go with an P14/M1917 action or a Winchester M70 if I wanted to do a .300 or .375 H&H rifle. Of course, one of the people giving me said advice seemed bent on raining on the parade of anyone who wanted to build a Mauser instead of buying...

I didnt build my mausers to save money... I could have honestly bought a nice Winchester 70 new for significantly less than I invested in any one of my builds..

I also didnt build my mausers to improve performance or make a "better" or "prettier" gun.. that same M70 I could have bought cheaper would likely perform just as well and would have looked just as nice..

I built my mausers because I wanted to learn how to do it (its a whole lot easier than you would think), and enjoy the process...

And, while its a bit quirky of me.. I also get a lot of satisfaction out of knowing when I hunt that I personally made just about everything I have with me other than my clothes, boots, and optics.. I loaded the ammo.. I built the rifle.. I made the knife.. I made my own ammo pouches.. my own sheaths.. my own sling.. etc.. (its really quirky now that I think about it.. :) )...

Figuring out leather work, steel working and wood working skills, etc.. and then applying those skills to my hunting habit is an "outlet" for me.. it lets me step away from the real world for a few hours each week and do something productive rather than just sit and vegetate on the couch, that isnt stressful and doesnt involve me burning additional brain cells over work related stuff..

RE: lengthing the action.. Im pretty sure 300 H&H is a bit too long (I dont know the COAL of 300 H&H off the top of my head.. but I know its a good bit longer than 30-06 COAL of 3.34.. and 30-06 is about as long a cartridge as I have ever seen anyone run through a standard M98 action without having to open it and the magazine up a bit..

Like other M98 conversion work, thats really not that difficult of a task though as long as you have the right tools, go slow, and have a clue about what youre doing.. you'd be amazed what youtube can teach you (youtube and @Shawn.54 got me through my first mauser build with little to no problem at all)..

The bigger challenge is opening up the rails and the bolt face to work with the H&H properly IMO... but again, with the right tools, going slow, and paying attention, thats not really all that difficult a task either..

The other build option if you want to go 300 H&H (or 375 H&H for that matter) is to start with a P14 or M1917 enfield.. the action and magzine on those rifles are long enough and strong enough to handle H&H with no problem... The 300 H&H in my safe was built on an M1917 (I didnt build that one..)..

Well said, couldn't agree more.

The good thing about the 300 H& H is it feeds as well as a new born baby but with judicious hand loads it can almost equal the 300 Weatherby with a 150gn TTSX or if you really want to reach out and clobber plains game you could always load the 130gn TTSX to 3,600fps. Enjoy that beautiful rifle If your wife will let you.

This is a project I would love to undertake myself at some point, either on a ZG47 or ZKK600! I’ve been in thing for a 300H&H for years!

Wow your wife has great taste in fine wood and steel;)
Yes she does! And if she shoots well on the range with it, buy her a pair of those Westley Richards shooting socks for her effort! Let her choose the color though.

Nice looking rifle, I'm sure she will love it.

So now she has the rifle for Africa...what's on her menu?
Let me guess...Roan, Sable & Golden Wildebeest.
Whatever it is, it's not gonna be cheap for ya.
Kinda like that rifle.

Good luck to both of you.

Never is brother...she did mention Golden Wildebeest but who knows.
Text me some pictures of the R8 when you get time.

Knew I was in trouble when my better half asked why she couldn't have a rifle built for her. No good answer other then a "yes dear". Her caliber of choice was the 300 H&H.

So long as you get the same answer next time that’s you “Need” to build a rifle.

That is a gorgeous rifle in a great caliber, I'll bet your wife absolutely loves it. What caliber is her next one going to be?

How does she like shooting it?

Mate nothing wrong with thinking outside the box. Everything old deserves to be be able to perform to its best.
Pity you can't get replacement parts I need for this 1958 model as easy.
Cheers mate Bob

bob,
what is the 1958 model?

The 1958 model that needs a rebuild is me. All I need is,to jack the roe nails up jack the hair up and replace everything between the two.
Hopefully that helps .
Cheers from this worn out old fart.
Bob
