1st Trip Coming Up!

Welcome to AH sir

Welcome! Enjoy your hunt!
What rifles are you bringing?

Are you a fellow Minnesotan? There are definitely a few of us on the forum.
Hey Tra3! We are in Minnesota - north suburbs. I'm actually not planning to bring my rifles on this one, but could be talked into it (knowing I'd need to move quickly if I wanted to). Our outfitter seems to have a good setup, and use of the rifle and ammo is done at no additional charge. That said - I would love to use the rifle I bought last year for a moose hunt! Maybe next time.

Cuthberto, find out what rental rifle you will be using. You may have something similar that you can practice with. On both of my safaris the outfitter insisted that our rifles be checked for zero. That should give you an opportunity to get familiar with the gun you'll be using. Also it would be a good idea to confirm exactly what ammo you'll be using. Don't be surprised to see that it is the cheapest cup and core available. Good ammo is as expensive as all get out in South Africa. Shots in that part of South Africa tend to be longer than in other locations. Do a search on AH looking for posts about hunting there. If I recall correctly 300 yds. + is the norm. Another question for your outfitter.

Welcome to AH TC. You are about to embark on a true adventure. There is nothing like a FIRST safari. Yes, there will be more.

Hi Everyone! I'm really glad I found this forum - tons of great information. Thanks to all of you that post! The information is helpful, and the pics make the anticipation of the hunt that much more fun!

I'm heading to South Africa in early March. We've been talking about it for a couple of years, and my better-half recently surprised me with tickets from Minnesota to SA for a plains game hunt, for my 50th birthday present! To make it even better, she loves the idea of another couple of mounts in the house! I got lucky somewhere, because I know I don't deserve her. :)

Again - thanks for all the great information and the willingness to share the good, the bad and the ugly! Its extremely helpful for us newcomers.
