Is there an African animal you wouldn't shoot?

Elephants , while I understand the need for culling, I love them. Rhinos because they are too rare, all cats unless they were coming to eat me, and giraffe because it’s my wife’s favorite animal.

If we want to deepen this question it could get a very sensitive topic. There are animals that are not shot because they have no interest for us but with others you can be against hunting these species.

I don't shoot leopards and lions , and even i disapprove this kind of hunting , especially lions. It's about the meaning of this hunt , because you hunt mainly to get meat. Surely we only do that nowadays for our pleasure , but the deepest sense should remain. Since hardly anyone feeds on lion meat , what is the point of this hunt ? We don't need to speak of the damage caused in the social structure of a pride when a trophy lion is shot. I don't want to say more on this topic.
You are entitled to your own thoughts and opinions no matter how wrong they may be. Lion and leopard meat is highly sought after by Africans. They believe it gives you strength. So number one the meat is not wasted! This is the biggest lie from the antis and it’s now here on a AH!
Maybe you are forgetting the principal of hunters dollars funding conservation and therefore keeping the lions wild? There are plenty of lions where we are allowed to hunt them. We only hunt fully mature non pride males so therefore it does nothing to the population.
So it’s great for everyone to express their thoughts in this thread. Great! But let’s be factual please.

We do not want to go into the details of factual opinions and factual behavior. The antis have their arguments , the opposing party , we the hunters , too. Nobody should be naive when it comes to where the money is used. That hunting in general is necessary for nature conservation it's right , but the role that trophy hunting should play in it can be discussed.

I was soldier in Africa and have the advantage of owning a house in Ouagadougou and therefore a residence in Burkina Faso. I get more things with than the tourist who only hunts in Africa every few years and only sees what he wants to see or what you show him.

Without a doubt, one of the finest meats I've ever eaten is Mountain Lion. As delicate as cold smoked salmon, similar in texture, and very mild flavored. I suspect the big cats on the Dark Continent are not too different. Would like to know though.

If it's not a buffalo, sable, kudu, oryx, elan, lechwe or waterbuck... I'll pass. You can have at 'em, but shooting monkeys and porcupines? Doesn't float my boat.

If its legal I would hunt it, lots I cannot afford? There is nothing I would not try eating. Mnt lion is some of the best eating, mildest fine grained delicious meat one can eat. Was not allowed to try hyena, it vanished?? I will try African lion this summer, and will convince PH (hope he is reading this) that I want to try all the others as well. Anyone eaten civet, honey badger???

Well, there are elephants, lions, leopards etc., I have yet to shoot a monkey or a porcupine.

Not interested in shooting cats, elephants, rhino, hippo, et al. Buffalo and ungulates, yes. Perhaps zebra, esp. Grevey's.

Monkeys of any sort - just no interest. Ditto giraffes and ostriches for the same reason.
Rhinos, due to scarcity, as many have said. If they were as ubiquitous as impalas... I'd have a change of heart.

I do not begrudge anyone their own choices. To each his/her own.

Including baboons? Baboons are among the most challenging animals to hunt in Africa. I went years before getting one. It was my nemesis for a while but now got two of them. One mounted jumping off the wall!
I guess I have to correct you as rhinos are not scarce. There are 20,000 of them just in RSA and the population is going up, hunters are needed to keep the breeding operations going. I decided to take a sawed horn bull as that was the conservation choice for me.

Maybe be a bit careful in your desire to eat everything..... Look what has happened in China....and have eaten lion but long time ago.... Wouldn't now as some are carrying diseases you wouldn't want to potentially catch......leopard fillet isn't bad....as for hyaena .....not a chance... can't imagine why anyone would want to eat it...

As I think I’ve said, I would hunt any animal so long as it is legal. All animals exist on the same moral plane, and to elevate some species over others is - in my view - both morally wrong as well as logically indefensible.

Having said that, I get, and have no problem with, people who don’t want to hunt particular animals, as long as the justification is no more or less than “I don’t want to.” ‘Doesn’t float my boat’ is the same, and entirely ok. We are free to do, or not do, what we want. It’s when we try to justify our decisions by a resort to something more than emotion that we start trouble. I get that some find elephants ‘magnificent’ and won’t shoot them. I think they are magnificent too and I shoot them.

As for meat? Not a big reason for me to hunt, and I don’t think anyone going to Africa can legitimately use that as a reason. Even if your cook will use some of your animal, there is no way you can eat enough to have this justification be valid. You can’t say you hunt for the meat if you ate half a bongo backstrap.

I prefer to say I hunt for many reasons, and out of respect for the animal, I do my best to ensure that nothing is wasted. Since I won’t be eating (much or any of) it, I prefer that someone does. But even that falls apart from time to time. No one I’ve seen eats hyena, and in Muslim countries unless they can kill the animal in a halal manner (which requires that it be alive when they get to it), it may well be that no one will eat it. But that wasn’t a conversation I had before I shot a lesser kudu in Ethiopia.

I am more worried about catching something from the flights around the world than anything I may catch from eating things. Sardine plane rides expose us to far more. I have eaten lots in China, follow the safe eating practices and all is fine.

I agree with you fully, there are many valid reasons that someone would not hunt something, I hope they would all be factual. Seams we hold the same moral beliefs and views also. No one species has higher moral ground than another. That's something the antis promote. Correct you are on your statement about eating what we shoot. I certainly do not hunt for the meat. Hunt for the experience, to say I have hunted. I truly believe it is in my genes. Most do not understand. Far easier, less costs, no worry or mess to go to store and procure. Yet still I must hunt, waste nothing, enjoy the experience while we can. Life's too short.

Hi Philip. First, I guess I was unaware with regards to rhino; I've just had a general perception that their numbers are not what other numbers are. Again, I'd be up to hunt rhino.

And yes on including baboon. I just have no interest in hunting a monkey of any sort. I have zero issues with those who do. They are just not of interest to me.

Happy Monday everyone.

There are very few animals that I don't want to hunt, ardvark being one of them, having only saw two of them and neither was what I would have called a hunt.

Thank you for starting the thread.... Definitely helping me to see which animals not too add in future packages...:ROFLMAO:

I would say that if there is one animal that also does not really get me going it is a giraffe, I mean if my client would like to hunt one I will guide him any time but personally I have no desire to shoot one.

I think it's good to have a list of animals that we would not shoot. I feel that keeps us in the moral ground of hunters instead of killers.

That being said, I wouldn't shoot a giraffe. They look perfect standing upright instead of on the ground.

It has been a fun discussion.

I agree As for me, a giraffe would be way down my list. My understanding is that unless they've been pressured a lot (human or lion) that it is about as challenging as shooting domestic cattle in a pasture. The one animal that I really can't imagine shooting, unless it wanted to hurt me, is a honey badger. They just such an amazing animal. Nasty little bastards, but still amazing.
