Welcome to AH christo pienaar!

Welcome to the forum!
For your question, i dont care about luxury. Good tent, decent food, and african landscape with a lot of animals. The only luxury i will appreciate, is cold beer at the end of exausting hunting day.

Giday christo and welcome to the A H forums.

Welcome to AH Forum !

...and straight to your question :

Many of us hunt around the world and know much simpler accommodations so that comfort is certainly not the first priority.

I am very surprised by your question and the related proposal , especially coming from a hunter who lives in Africa. We all know how dangerous it is to spend the night outdoors in the bush or the forest in Africa , as well as in the forest of Amazonia or the jungle of south and southeast Asia. Do you have a huge staff who keeps watch all night or has some things changed in some regions of Africa ?

Only in the movies in most of South Africa.

If the hunting is good a tent and a field bed will suffice for me, cold beer at the end of the day will be much apprecitated though..

When in a tent I have the habit of keeping a double rifle within arms lenght, loaded with softs for the occational lion...and I curse the african states for denying me to bring the old .455 Webley..or a similar modern variant..!

I would rather my monies spent on the hunting experience rather than luxuries I don't need.

Welcome to AH.

Velo Dog got +1 on lodging....So I'll say +2.....+2 on the cold beer...or a good single malt scotch or brandy if the weather turns really cool at night. And +2 on the good food and lots of animals.

Christo, welcome to the AH forum! Not real picky about where I stay as long as I’m comfortable enough to sleep well. I’ve stayed in nice places, terrible places, very nice tent camps, etc. The hunt is what the adventure is about. A decent meal of game and a glass of red wine next to a fire makes the night more enjoyable.

Christo, if you are really what you say you are Welcome to AH. At this moment I'm skeptical.

Welcome aboard!

Both are nice options to have. The majority of us are good with rustic to above average accommodations, and dont need the super nice place to stay.

Welcome. As long as I'm in Africa....I don't really care where I sleep. If the camaraderie is high, the beer is cold, the game is plentiful... what more is there?

So, I’ll bite.

I think many Americans will tell you they are fine with a tented hunt. I am as well. However, doing a rough camp out west where a cook throws a can of Dinty Moore at me is not why I go to Africa. A tent camp in Africa brings to most folks most mind something Hemingway would have occupied in 1930’s East Africa, or perhaps Ruark in the fifties. As you would well know, some operators in both Namibia and South Africa try to replicate that feel with semi-permanent “tents” on their concessions or farms where guests can believe they are in wildest Africa.

A couple of outfitter’s now offer back packing trips. In Namibia that is typically in the mountains and Hartman Zebra is the usual quarry.

Someone could, I suppose, run a replica of an old East African tent camp, but I would suspect the costs would be prohibitive. You would have to move it periodically, or it quickly would become a tattered squalid version of the permanent camps (which have established sewage systems). That would be further complicated by rapid turnover of guests and the limited camping locations on any given ranch.

The option that I think you are suggesting is throw everything in the back of the land cruiser and go hunting for a week or ten days sleeping under a fly and “bathing” from a wash basin. You tell me whether you will dig a latrine or hand out a shovel fo a cat hole. You will find some who will be ok with that, particularly if there is a significant price differential - but enough to build a niche clientele?

I personally spent way too much time “tenting” in my profession to enjoy it very much in its basic form. I would be delighted to stay in 50’s era camp for a month, moving from hunting area to hunting area with its large staff, sit down dinners, mosquito boots, and being
served sundowners at the end of the day. Folks going to hunt South Africa typically don’t have that sort of time, and I just don’t believe that model is feasible or even believable on a game ranch. I’ll leave a pickup truck hunt for others.

And for God’s sake, turn off the all caps when typing.

GOOD DAY KURPFALZJÄGER
THE HUMAN IN AFRICA IS MORE DANGEROUS , IF YOU FARAWAY FROM HUMANS YOU PRITY SAFE

I am quoting, just to make sample of text.

What @Red Leg mentioned, please turn off caps lock.

When you type with block letters, it suggests to others that you are shouting, screaming, not nice, really.
