I was at a gun show in Denver yesterday, and a gentleman had an older custom Remington 700 with a heavy, short (22”?) barreled (w/band), rifle laying on his table along with other rifles. The price tag stated $875.00 with one box of ammo included. The ammo on the table was a new box of Hornady.416 Remington. I looked at the rifle and the barrel was stamped “.416 Hoffman”. I told the gentleman, who had bought the rifle from an OP, that I didn’t believe the .416 Remington could be fired in the Hoffman? The gentleman didn’t know the rifle was chambered for the Hoffman and didn’t have a clue what I was trying to explain to him. I know the Hoffman was a wildcat before the Remington AND the .416 Remington is VERY similar in dimensions, but can it be fired in the Hoffman?

It is possible to shoot a .416 Rem Mag out of a rifle which is chambered in .416 Hoffmann - but not vice versa.
The .416 Hoffmann is a wildcat which is older than the .416 Rem Mag.
Remington used the brass of their 8mm Rem Mag to create a .416 caliber, which explains why the Rem Mag is slightly smaller than the Hoffmann.
 
The 8mm REM MAG is the parent case for the 416RM.
The 375H&H is the parent case for the 8mm RM and the 416 HOFFMAN.
The 416HOFF case is slightly larger than the 416RM and you can shoot the 416RM safely in a 416HOFF rifle.

Thanks so much for this explanation! Apparently the original owner WAS shooting the Remington out of the Hoffman and included a new box of ammo along with the rifle? I was just curious.
 
I could use some advice, I just recently picked up a 416 Hoffman, Brown Precision Pro Hunter, and before I order the dies, brass, etc., I was wondering whats the advantage to all that work versus buying loaded 416 Rem Mag ammo if it’s also safe to shoot through my rifle. I understand why It’s possible to do just that, but is it smart? Could prolonged use of 416 Rem Mag ammo damage my rifle in any way, when it comes to ammo I tend to take the easy route if possible and buy factory stuff but if I need to reload so be it. Thanks in advance for the help, I really appreciate it!
 
I can't say if it will damage your rifle, but I'm sure others will know, but you will probably see lower pressures/velocities than shooting rem mag ammo out of a rem mag rifle. The only way to tell how much would be to run it over a chrono. I think there may be few members who own 375 whaetherby rifles and shoot H&H ammo through them, and that's pretty much the same thing as your wanting to do.
 
That definitely makes sense, thanks. I’m not too concerned with losing some speed but I want it to be safe and not do any unnecessary damage, I love the rifle or else I would have just stuck to getting a 416 rem mag, thanks again.

If the OP experts on this thread say you can shoot the Remington in the Hoffman, go for it! If you really like your Hoffman rifle, keep it and shoot it often. I was just perplexed when I saw this rifle chambered in Hoffman for sale with a box of new Remington Mags to go with it when sold?

Experts out there on the .416 Hoffman? So, you fire the .416 Rem Mag through the Hoffman. This blows out and expands the case and shoulder? Kind of like an Ackley Improved fire forming? Then run the case through Hoffman dies? Just curious, cause I’ll bet this rifle will still be available this weekend at the same Gun show in Denver. I wish it had the Hoffman dies with it though? The Hoffman dies are probably pricey through Redding, so I’ll probably pass on the rifle anyways, but the “impractical “ wildcats still intrigue me.

Yes, probably won’t buy it unless I could get it for less than the asking price. Somebody here on AH must have Hoffman dies? Probably someone who wanted a rifle in .416 before Remington came out with theirs in 1989?

Actually, I just checked on Midway and the two die Redding set is $200.00. When I bought my Redding .416 Taylor dies from them, they had a sale and I got them for $158.00 . The Hoffman dies will eventually go on sale too. But, it still might be a moot point? Although, I could always shoot Rem Mags out of it till I got the dies?
 
Well, I saw this rifle again at a gun show here. But it’s a LH model! I wasn’t paying attention to that the first time I saw it laying on the table. Oh well, better luck next time!
