I was at the Houston Safari Club on Saturday. Much, much smaller show that DSC. Bumped into a few other AH gentleman hunters: @tarbe , @Bullthrower338 , @ActionBob and @Dave Hawkins. Oh yea, @John Sharp too.

I sat down with an outfitter from Tanz and we discussed a buffalo hunt. The outfitter was candid about the situation in Tanz, saying a lot of concessions come up for auction at the end of 2021.

In case anyone was wondering what a 1x1, 28 day, lion, leopard and full bag hunt costs..............wait for it...........$118k. Charter flight not included in that price, which makes it a deal breaker for me.

Lottery here I come!

Sigh - one of those, if you ask kind of things ......

Did I ever mention my hunts in Mozambique?

who with and when did you hunt moz

I flew into Houston Saturday for a wholesale jewelry show . Go out to dinner and saw a banner for the Houston show. So I played hooky from my buying show to go into the Houston safari club show for 3 hrs. Just down the hall from my buying show. Wish I’d of known ahead of time. Might of been able to meet some of the fine folks from AH there.

I'm already booked for the next five years.

You can find some outfitters now that will have you picked up in Mbeya and be driven to the concession. Makes the hunt so much more affordable. ;)

Forgot to mention, if you wanted to economize and do a 2x1, it's only $76k.

It was great seeing you there again!

I found "some" Tanzania operators starting to get more creative over the past couple years. And there are now some options with commercial flights that get you close enough to drive in. This is not the best deal I found, but it is representative....

And once you have that license bought, most of the trophy fees are pretty reasonable. Such as adding 2 more buffalo in the $3000 to $4000 each range. Even adding lion and elephant can be pretty reasonable, especially as you may get the full 21 days included.

Does it go with exclamation mark, as a surpise? Or is it just stated as fact?

I went that road... I mean, when I started reasearching for my first safari, I did not know where to look, or is there any difference from country to country.
Its all Africa, or subsaharan Africa, right?
Tanzania. Mozambique, South Africa,, Namibia... all the same, right?
Wrong!
As I have soon learnt.

I checked the offers from all safari countries, I was dissapointed and surprised, quite to high prices of some countries.

Anyway, 118k, for full bag safari, is not surprise, similar offers you will find in Zimbabwe, and in Mozambique.
Plains game package in Moz, or Tanz, will go at least 4 times higher then comparable package in RSA, or NAM

Budget safaris, are only in Namibia and South Africa. I wish, that other countries follow that model of conservation, but at the moment it is just my wishfull thinking.

Would a high dollar hunt be that much more enjoyable than a low priced African hunt? I don't know. It is not the Tanzania of 100 years ago. The human population has literally exploded there, and in some places poaching is rampant. Still, I've not been there so just wondering. Is Tanz magic still? Someone on AH should buy this hunt, and give a detailed report......FWB

My 7 day buffalo and pg hunt in Tan in 1985, 2x1, with my wife along, R/T airfare included for both, all inclusive, (no air charter) was about $5500. So help me.

I fear you are spot on...better to hunt Zim or any of the better/lower priced states...if you are rich it dont matter anyway but for us commoners it does..

You are talking the difference between operating on a game Ranch in countries with pretty good infrastructure... compared to very large wild government concessions in countries where the infrastructure is not as good ...Another distances are great...this includes getting fuel and supplies etc in......So don't go trying to compare ....and as for the model of conservation.... As I said you are comparing two totally different types of operations..... Maybe one day when unfortunately the big wild concessions are no more due to population explosion... then I suppose the game ranching scenario you so love as its cheap will possibly become the norm ....if the legislation is in place to allow it....but I hope the big wild concessions are around for as long as possible.... And I also hope there keep on being people who can afford to hunt these places.....

If I won the lottery, I would absolutely hunt nothing but the truly wild places! Sadly my limited funds keep me in the high fenced locations.
I still have dreams of going at least once to the truly wild far out locations! May still happen. One never knows.

That's right , but the prices are not always explained by the additional costs. As far as Tanzania is concerned , there is a price difference between the north areas near Arusha or Massai-land , and the Selous game reserve in the south , all large open concessions with poor infrastructure and sometime the need of a charter flight. It suggests that there are may be other reasons that explain these price differences. In some regions costs may arise to get some necessary permits , or it's not so ?

Try Bullet Safaris! I hunted ten days in Rungwa, Tanzania, this last August. Truly a fantastic, wild, magical place! Eight animals in eight days, including two dugga boys taken within 30 seconds of each other. It was expensive, and worth every penny.

I think there are different fees payable to the government for concessions depending on their grading . Also as far as I understand now the government has changed it to a bidding system.... Starting at a stated minimum.... The first round was last year I think and there were a few concessions nobody bid on.....could be wrong as was told this a while ago by couple of friends who hunt there and am a bit hazy about it now....I know one company who is not operating anymore charged a cheaper day rate for its selous area than its other concessions further north , as it didn't consider it as good an area compared to its other ones....one problem is a country looks at what's happening in another country and says ok they are changing more for trophy fees so that means we aren't getting enough from the operators in our country so we will make them pay more....So bit of a vicious circle and that's possibly one reason why tanzania and Zambia among others have put up the minimum prices operators have to start bidding at to get concessions.... Also same thing with trophy fees.....tanzania few years ago was still fairly expensive on day rates but trophy fees were cheap....but as I said they looked at other countries who had higher trophy fees but cheaper day rates and said we aren't charging enough to the operators for licence fees.....of course non of them took into account that one country had higher trophy fees but cheaper day rates and other had higher day rates but cheaper trophy fees which balanced it out.....now both have gone up....but TIA.....

Don't worry , there is no shortage of good , expensive addresses for hunting in Tanzania !:)

I wonder if they've ever studied the demographics of African hunters. Seems to me they'd want to maximize the income from hunting before the boomers stopped their African hunts. Then again, maybe the oil sheiks and other foreigners will keep them in business.
