The 500 B&M is not in the standard line up of B&M Cartridges. It is or was more of an experiment and something to play with. The 500 MDM is a 2.8 inch RUM case, at .500 caliber. The 500 B&M is a 2.5 inch RUM case. Both designed for the Winchester M70 RUM Control Feed action, long action.

At 2.5 inches one can load full length nose projection Raptors, with the added Talon Tip, and work in the full length magazine of a long action Winchester M70, RUM

Now there was only 2 of these guns built, they were never standard B&M Cartridges, just something we played around with. The cartridge is great actually, totally on its own. I like it a lot, and it has performed extremely good. I built the first one, then Russ Green built one. Russ got out of the Big Bore rifles, and I bought the barrel from him and had it here for a couple of years anyway………

Back last year, I saw that Wes at Accurate Innovations had an incredible looking stick of Myrtle. Very nice looking blank and I figured it would make a dandy stock.

I had this 500 B&M barrel, so why not just build the 2cd 500 B&M and get Wes to make a stock with this incredible stick of Myrtle? I could not think of a down side so off we go…………

Now, we all know that Myrtle turns brownish orange over time. When first cut, it is just drop dead gorgeous and leans more toward white/yellow, but over time it turns……. Wes studied the issue, and believes that a high gloss poly over it will protect the wood and keep its color original. I love Myrtle, so that is what Wes did………

Wes happened to be not too far away this week, and decided to drop by after a meeting and personally deliver the rifle which he had, fitted to the stock…………… Needless to say, Michael is a very happy boy with this……………

18 inches...................Thanks

Capable of 450 CEB Raptors or 450 North Forks at 2400 fps, 410 Raptors at 2500 fps and 500 gr CEB Solids at 2250 fps............. Excellent Buffalo, hippo and elephant................Weighs in at 8.25 lbs........

Cartridge is in between 50 B&M at 2.25 inches which is WSM short action, and the 500 MDM at full 2.8 inches......... Nice play cartridge............. It is also extreme with a 525 CEB Solid at 2175 fps, extreme depth of penetration............

And know nothing about the 500 b&m

Its not really part of the B&M line up. I own both rifles in 500 B&M, personal guns.

what velocity and energy does it produce

I think we posted about the same time, and you did not see the post above yours. Energy? Have no clue, never pay much attention to that, its bullet design and reasonable velocity in which that bullet works........

Nice looking rifle!!! I had one of your 458B&M's but a friend kept after me to sell it to him and he is just having a blast with his.

Help please -

Bondage & Masochism? : )

Just not in-the-know about this cartridge.

Good to see the mad scientist is still at it. Where on earth would you get the idea of going with myrtle? :)

Incredible looking rifle. I really like the wood. Although it is a unique chambering, it should be a great slayer of anything you shoot.

Always interesting to see one of your new creations. Beautiful stock.

Hey Dave, yes, I know, in contact with Chris about every other day at least. What a fine fellow, I have taken to him very well. Sent him a few care packages as well..............

I knew it wouldn’t be long you would pitch up with that Myrtle stock! HEH......... I got the Idea of Myrtle when AI was still in South Dakota, before Wes, and You were probably still in diapers........ LOL................. HEH

Wes has done incredible since taking over AI........ A HUGE improvement.........

By the way boys, these stocks ARE BIG BORE stocks....... full length aluminum chassis, never bust never break, Recoil Proof. Speaking of recoil, that chassis distributes recoil throughout the stock, making it far easier to handle the rifle.......... I would never even consider anything but an Accurate Innovations stock on a big bore rifle, and is mandatory on the 500 MDM, which runs things about 200-300 fps faster than the above cartridge/rifle..........

THanks, not really new, I retired from hunting in 2014 and used the first 500 B&M in the field for buffalo............ So the cartridge has been around, but its not in the B&M lineup of Standard cartridges. I also have a 2.5 inch 458, the 458 B&M EX, which is the same 2.5 inch RUM case squeezed down to 458........ Basically got bored with that one. It’s equal to 458 Lott, just shorter at 20 inches....... Big advantage using the Tipped CEB Raptors however in the magazine......... that buys you 125-150 fps at 50 yard impacts over no tip........

I had the extra barrel in 500 B&M, and Wes had that gorgeous stick of Myrtle, easy to do..........

I believe using myrtle for rifle stocks isn't exactly a new idea.
Is this what you mean by myrtle turning brownish orange?

bullpup1.jpg

photo saved from the internet. Rifle built in '80's (I think, if not earlier) by buckstix. Stock was ordered from Fajen, and then modified a little.

Yes, that one is seriously turned color........

I am not at my computer now, but I could show you a couple of photos of other Myrtle stocks that turned. I prefer them to stay original color like the one above. Hoping with the high gloss finish it will hold, it should since it is sealed. Time will tell.........

I'm a little torn about the colors. The wood on your rifle is spectacular, but a part of me is saying that a wooden rifle stock should be a darker color  :)

Do you happen to have a photo of a rifle with blonde myrtlewood stock and stainless or otherwise light colored metal?

I do, I have a 50 B&M with a Maple stock and stainless.........I also have a 416 B&M with Myrtle and stainless. But, I am not at my computer, and don’t have access to my photos here at the boat. On IPad.......... I can post some when I get back home but that is going to be tomorrow or Sunday...... I think...... No worries, I have plenty of Big Bores in Bastogne, English and Turkish as well....... dark and darker.......
