I have been researching straight-pull bolt-action rifles lately and have run across some reports of serious safety issues with the Blaser R93--a bolt being blown back into the shooter's face. Yikes! Made me rethink the whole idea of straight-pull guns.

I'm less interested in Blaser rifles and more interested in the straight-pull Heym SR30 gun. Its action was designed by Peter Fortner with ball-bearings acting as the locking lugs. So I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who has first-hand knowledge of these rifles as to their safety and performance. I have a Fortner-designed rimfire, the Anschutz 1727F, and have been very happy with it.

The internet is great for some things but terrible for others. The R98 is no longer produced. The R8 is the new Blaser and is totally reengineered. Point being don’t paint with a broad brush.
That said the Heym would be really cool to have!

Welcome to AH.

Don't forget to look at the Merkel Helix with a 2:1 bolt throw.
Moving the handle 2" results in 4" of bolt throw.

And the Browning Maral with a spring return to send the bolt into battery.
Very quick shooting for a driven hunt.

Lots of options out there, but there is only one available in the larger DG calibers...Blaser R8.
If you plan on hunting Africa you will want to at least consider the Blaser.
One PG trip to Africa and you will be dreaming of Cape Buffalo for your next one.

So far, so good. I thought its gonna get much worse!:A Popcorn:

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
