Geoff Mcdonald of Woodleigh is sending me a new batch of 450 grain Bullets in 416 caliber.
I’m going use Reloder 17 (74 grains) in my Remington magnum.
I’m to trial on scrub bulls and buffalo.
Any constructive comments on the powder loads would be appreciated.

Any suggestions on powder

Dr Ray
I just consulted load from a disc a came up with loads that give reasonable velocity and lower pressure they are using adi 2209
The 450gn soft nose 79gn 2209 velocity 2082 fps pressure 49,500 cup.
450 solid 75 gn 2209 MV 2,055fps pressure the same. If you want to use 2206h or 2208 you can get higher velocity but I need to know your pressure parameters. If the government to 52,000 cup ( around 60,000 psi) I can work that out. I know you are in oz so you can call me if you want on 0427129011.
Cheers Doc
Bob

I’ll call
I would like to use AR2209
I saw R17 somewhere
Don’t know where though
R17 will give 2150
With 74 grains
getting up there though

AR2209 seems to give high velocity with relatively low pressure. Must be a truly great powder.
I think Woodleigh is sending me the 450 grain protected points. Geoff said that they were a new batch for me to critique.

Dr Ray
The other powders like 2208, 2206H, BM8208 and Re 15 give slightly higher velocity but pressures appear to be getting beyond comfortable. The 2209 is max load listed with acceptable pressure. Almost 100% load density with the 09.

Geoff Mcdonald emailed me with load data.
Wow what a great company to deal with - so helpful.

I really like the Woodleigh bullets for a 404, but haven't quite figured out the difference in performance with the 347 & 350 gr bullets. The max velocity for the lighter is 2300 while the latter can go 2600. the confusing part is for most loads in the 404 Jeffery the bullet will be traveling slower than 2300 by about 50 feet off the muzzle. Seems like the bullet should work well in the 404. Maybe when you chat with Geoff you might ask him about this. I'd appreciate it.

Gday Dr Ray,
From our manual;
416 Rem 450 gr SN; Federal 215 primer;
Reloder 17 77 to 80 gr 2075 to 2165 fps
AR2208 71 to 74 gr 2080 to 2140 fps
AR2209 77 to 80 gr 2075 to 2130 fps
Hope this helps.

I'll use the R17 and work up to the max!

Thank you to all of those who provided data. I really appreciate that.

Hi Dr Ray, I have used these 450gn bullets and have had very poor performance with them from my 416 Rigby.
This bullet was removed from a scrub bull. The Bull was hit at a range of approximately 50m side on and the bullet hit
just behind the front leg. It broke a near side rib and through the chest
cavity through both lungs and lodged in tissue just on the other side of the
off side rib.
The bullet only hit a rib and as you can see there is nothing left other
than jacket down to the cannelure.
I tried the same bullet just recently with the following result.
I shot a Micky bull (young scrub bull) in poor condition at 142m(ranged).
The shot placement was not real good and hit him too far back. The entry did
not hit a rib and I found the bullet in the stomach. It also did not mushroom but folded the jacket back in ragged pieces. I must say it was poor performance as I thought at that range with a little less velocity it would pass through given that it only had
chewed grass as an impediment.
I have now lost all confidence and will not be using these in my 416 Rigby.
My communication with Geoff from Woodleigh has not been as positive as yours.

"Hi Neale,
Thank's for that, obviously, we will have to do some gell, and field testing
to see what is wrong. I have had excellent results with 400 gr from my 416
Rem."
If you test these Dr Ray please get up nice and close to the target animal so that short range performance is gauged.
Please recover the bullets and estimate the penetration.

Maybe Dr Ray but mine were only purchased recently.
He did not offer to send me some "new" ones to try.

I didn’t ask but that’s the luck of the draw. Maybe I’m magnificent !
Lol!

my use of re17 suggests that you need a little less than 2209, suggesting that re17 burns just a little faster.
re17 seems a little more temp sensitive, meaning stay below the red line.
I won the fclass open in the sara queens using re17, suggesting it can have accuracy.
bruce.

Dr Ray, I meant that when Geoff was informed about my experience with the 450's and if he had a "new batch" he might have sent me a couple to compare with the "old".
Please publish your results here.

I’ve only ever used R7 in the Reloder powders. Used mainly AR2209 and sine AR2206 and many IMR powders. In Winchester I used mainly 296 760 748 and 780/5 (cannot recall the last properly).
But I used almost exclusively AR2209 in the last 20 plus years although I used AR2208 in the 416.
I assume R17 is a flake powder that smells like pepper???

Ps Bruce
Nice talking talking w you the other night.
